Dear Parents and Carers,
Welcome back to Term 4 2022. My thanks to you all for enabling us to plan learning on Monday 10th and Tuesday 11th October. I know of the challenges pupil-free days can create for working parents.
A new curriculum in English and in Maths is being introduced in 2023. Our work on Monday 10th enabled us to work with Our Lady of the Nativity, Lawson (OLN), in getting ready for that. It was a great opportunity for us at St Canice’s to work in a different school and to learn with our peers. We will continue this great work into Term 4.
I was privileged to attend a stunning Indigenous Education conference at The Fairmont in Leura last week. Six of our students were involved in the opening of the conference, performing a dragonfly dance that they worked on throughout Term 3, along with other children from the Catholic schools in the mountains. They brought the house down and got a standing ovation at the end of the performance. My thanks to Mrs Sztelma for supporting the students throughout the preparation and the performance. They will be able to show their parents their dance at some point in November. The conference helped Ms Gillespie, Ms Morley and myself to consider the richness of our indigenous land and culture here in the Blue Mountains. We look forward to continuing to bring that richness to our educational agenda in 2023. My thanks to our wonderful elder, Aunty Carol Cooper, who attended the conference with us.
I am very pleased to advise that our attendance rates have been very high so far this term. It is wonderful for your child and for the teaching teams to be at school every day to learn and to socialise. Long may the children remain healthy and keep up the great work. Thank you also for setting high expectations around school uniform. Keep that one also on the agenda this term.
We continue to pray for the Wedesweiler family and for Alan at St Canice’s. The children are praying daily and adding a prayer bead to a jar each time they pray so that they can see those jars fill and they can appreciate the cumulative effect of prayer. Parents, we ask for your prayers also at this very difficult time for Angela and her children. When you pray at home with your family, your child can also add beads to the jar on the next day at school to reflect these prayers.
Sadly, another past member of staff, Carolyn Armstrong ( Kenna), passed away recently following a long battle with lung cancer. Those who knew Carolyn speak so highly of the joy she brought to all and of the great work she did to care for and raise awareness and support for others. She worked particularly hard to raise awareness of lung cancer and to garner government support in funding research. May she rest in peace.
You will receive a letter next week from your stage team advising you of what is on the learning agenda for this term and also of other activities you will need to know about. Look out for that letter. In addition, our calendar document for Weeks 2-6 will go home before the end of this week.
All the best for a great Term 4. As always, the door at St Canice’s is an open and welcoming one, should you need to contact us about any matters related to your child’s wellbeing and learning.
God bless,
Ms Miriam
Parents and Carers, some of you are helping us to organise this year’s fundraiser, the school disco, to happen on Friday, 18th November. We will hold our second school disco meeting on Friday this week, 21st October, 8:45am-9:30am. If you have not been involved to date but would like to be, please join us in the library.
At the end of last term, we farewelled the wonderful Ms Emma Greenhill who had served as our St Canices ensemble teacher and private violin lessons teacher during 2022. She also worked with Ms Frazer teaching stage two strings on Wednesdays. We will miss her amazing original pieces that she shared with us during ensemble and her delightfully warm personality. We wish her well on her next adventure. |
Congratulations to Kathryn who safely delivered a baby brother for Mason in Stage 1 on 13.10.22
Baby Jordan is healthy happy and his big brothers are smitten!
I have asked via COMPASS that the children pay particular attention to uniform. I have also asked teachers to ensure high uniform expectations. Students are to wear full summer uniform at the commencement of term 4 - Wednesday 12th October. Please ensure all students have a school hat with their name clearly marked.
Uniform can be purchased from The School Locker, the link to the online shop is HERE.
Second hand items are available at the officel, feel free to pop in anytime.
2023 school travel applications are now open
Applications for student travel in 2023 open from Monday 10 October 2022.
Students who need a School Opal card or travel pass for 2023 can apply now. A new application will need to be submitted if they are applying for the first time, or if they are requesting anadditional travel entitlement as a result of a new shared parental responsibility situation (e.g.joint custody).
Students who change address, school, campus location, have repeated a year or received an expiry notification from Transport for NSW for their school travel entitlement should renew or update their details before the end of term 4. This will ensure that schools can endorse applications, and entitlements remain valid for the start of the 2023 school year. School Opal card holders will have the changes applied to their existing card.
If a student’s distance eligibility has changed based on their grade (i.e. grade two to grade three), the system will automatically update their entitlement if they meet the new criteria. If they do not meet the new eligibility criteria, we will send an expiry notification via email.
Students who have an entitlement approved under a medical condition that is due to expire will receive a notification advising them to re-apply.
Term Bus Pass holders will receive a notification to re-apply.
Students in the Opal network applying for an Opal card (including a Term Bus Pass) for the first time will receive their Student Opal card at their nominated postal address. Cards will be mailed out from January 2023.
Students living in rural and regional (R&R) areas should receive their travel pass at the start of the new school year from their nominated transport operator. It may come via the school or be sent directly to them at home. Note: some R&R operators do not issue travel passes.
Students/parents should confirm with their nominated operator if they do not receive a pass.
Travel from Term 1 2023
We ask that parents plan ahead and make sure their child knows which service/s to use and has a valid ticket to travel; either a School Opal card or Child/Youth Opal card (within Greater Sydney) or a School Travel Pass (outside Greater Sydney), from the start of the school year.
Applications for 2023 School Student Transport Scheme (SSTS) travel open at the start of Term 4 2022, so parents/students can apply or update details early and be ready for the start of the new school year.
Most students using the Opal network will not need a new Opal card and can continue travelling on their existing card each year.
The start of the year is a busy period for local transport operators, and students travelling without a valid ticket make service planning and operations difficult.
We recognise that for some families last minute changes to school enrolments mean they may not have a School Opal card or Travel Pass for the start of term. In the Opal network, we strongly encourage these families to have their children travel with a Child/Youth Opal card until they receive their valid School Opal card. If outside Greater Sydney, parents should contact their local bus operator to discuss their travel needs.
Bus operators are flexible and understanding, particularly at the start of the school year, and will ensure students can travel safely to and from school. But to best support our operators we encourage all students to have a valid ticket, as early as possible, from the start of the school
year.
Students using School Opal cards are also reminded that they must tap on and tap off in line with the Student code of conduct and Opal terms of use.

At St Canice’s, we want to hear complaints as they arise because we want to ensure that we are working with our community to maintain positive relationships and a safe and happy school.
All complaints are treated seriously, dealt with as soon as practicable and conducted in a fair, impartial and professional manner.
Depending on the nature of the complaint, parents and carers are encouraged in the first instance to raise the complaint with the relevant staff member. If a parent / carer deems that the Principal or Assistant Principal need to be aware of the complaint, an appointment time should be made to discuss the complaint.
If the complaint is not resolved to the parent / carer’s satisfaction, he / she should put the complaint in writing. The school will assess the complaint and seek a resolution.
Parents / Carers who feel that the school is not resolving the complaint should contact CEDP at communityliaison@parra.catholic.edu.au or telephone on 9840 5600. Alternatively, they can access the CEDP Handling Complaints Form at the link provided below.
The CEDP Handling Complaints Policy is available from our website at this address:
A reminder to all families that we have students at St Canice's who have severe allergies that result in anaphylaxis.
We ask that no nut / nut products be sent to school.
As a strategy to reduce risk, we ask that you remind your child not to share their food with other students.
We value our strong relationship with families and welcome opportunities to communicate with parents and carers. We also recognise that email is a fast and convenient way to contact your child’s teacher or other school staff.
Although staff will read their emails at various times throughout the school day, they are not expected to respond to emails outside of normal working hours. Staff will try to respond to emails within 24 hours. As some staff work part time, it is reasonable to expect an email response from part time staff on their next working day.
In the case of an emergency, do not rely on email. In such situations, please contact the school office on 4780 6800. Our caring team will return your call as soon as possible.
If you wish to contact the office via email, please email stcanices@parra.catholic.edu.au
If you need to contact a staff member and are not sure of the staff member’s email, you can also send your email to stcanices@parra.catholic.edu.au It will then be directed to your child’s teacher or another relevant staff member.
Thank you so much for your assistance and understanding.
Ms Miriam Principal
