Newsletter - Self Reliance since 1884

Term 2 Week 6 - 2 June 2022

Dear Parents/Carers,

Attendance SMS Absences

Thank you to the many families who are letting us know if their child or children are absent from school for the day by notifying the office by phone or the class teacher through Seesaw or even through the Skoolbag App. We have also received reply text messages when parents receive a text to let them know the class roll has been marked and their child is absent.

As has been mentioned before, it is a legal requirement for your child to attend school every day during the school term and if they are absent parents/carers need to inform the school with a justified explanation.

School starts at 8:50am and finishes at 2:50pm. Please ensure your children are at school on time ready for their lessons to start and are picked up on time.

We will continue to send SMS messages after 10am each day, providing time for parents to notify the school of their child’s absence. You can reply by return text with your child’s name, class and the reason for their absence. There are a variety of other ways to inform the school of your child’s absence:

-          Email – canleyvale-p.school@det.nsw.edu.au

-          Phone – 9724 1555

-          Seesaw – direct to the class teacher

-          Skoolbag App

Semester One Reports & Parent Teacher Interviews

Teachers are currently writing Semester One reports for your children. Like last year, reports will not be sent home with students but will be available for collection half an hour before scheduled interview times outside the school hall or library, depending on the location of the interviews.

It is extremely important to speak with your child’s teacher about their progress. Our teaching staff would welcome conversations with you to discuss the progress and future directions for your child’s learning. We kindly ask you to try and attend a parent/teacher interview in the last week of this term.

Preschool interviews are being held this week. Thank you to the many parents of our preschool children who attended on Tuesday. There are more scheduled for today and this afternoon.

Years K-2 will hold their interviews on Thursday 30 June and Years 3-6 interviews have been scheduled for Wednesday 29 June. Interviews will start from 8am and conclude by 6pm and will be for 10 minutes in duration. Detailed information on how to make a booking for an interview will be sent home on Friday. If parents/carers would like some assistance with booking a time please attend a learning kiosk on either Tuesday 7 June or Thursday 16 June between 8:30-9:30am or 2:30-3:30pm at our picnic tables near the flagpoles.

Zone Cross Country

Yesterday our school hosted the Lansdowne PSSA Cross Country Carnival for 2022. Our Year 6 students held a snack stall to raise funds for their Year 6 Farwell and the P&C ran a sausage sizzle BBQ for a fundraiser too. Thank you to the parents who volunteered their time to assist with barbecuing and selling on the stall. It was a cold and windy day and we appreciate the time and commitment of those parents and Year 6 students who worked the stalls selling food and drink to competitors and spectators.

P&C Meeting

Last week we held our P&C meeting for May. There were several items on the agenda. Thank you to the many parents who attended the meeting and discussed important issues. The minutes of the meeting can be found on our school website. The next meeting will be on Friday 24 June at 9am.

Mural

If you have been at school recently you will have noticed that we have a mural being painted along the wall of the school hall. The artist has had the assistance of some Year 6 students to paint some of the sections. The mural focus, designed by Mulga, the artist, has been around the two Australian animal totems for the area – the goanna and the cockatoo.

Current Contact Details for Parents/Carers

On occasion the school needs to contact parents urgently. If your child is sick or injured the school will contact the parents or carers. If they cannot be reached, we will call the emergency contact phone numbers. It is crucial that the contact details you have provided to the school are kept up to date. Recently, we have had to make calls to families and no-one picks up the phone or there are incoming call restrictions. This can cause much anxiety and distress for a child that is in our sick bay due to illness or an injury when we can’t get their mum or dad on the phone. When, or if, you change your contact details, please notify the school as soon as possible to ensure it is not your child that is left waiting for long periods because we cannot contact a family member.

If you receive a phone call from our school – 9724 1555 or 9724 1315 please don’t ignore the phone call. The school is calling because we need to speak with a parent or carer. Our school phone number should be saved in your contacts and always answered.

Kindergarten Enrolments 2023

We are now accepting enrolments for Kindergarten 2023. If your child turns 5 before 31 July 2023 you are able to request an enrolment package from the school office. All families within our school intake zone will be accepted, provided all documentation is submitted.

Families who are out of our school area can request an ‘Out of Area’ application package and complete an enrolment form. The ‘Out of Area’ panel will meet regularly in Term 3 to discuss these applications and make decisions of acceptance or non-acceptance.

Preschool Enrolments 2023

Enrolment packages are now available from the front office for families seeking a place in our preschool for their child in 2023. Our preschool is a Department of Education preschool and is for children the year before they attend Kindergarten. We will have 80 places available in 2023. Enrolment applications are due back by Wednesday 8 June 2022 so that places for 2023 can be assigned as soon as possible. Parents will then be able to plan work and childcare arrangements accordingly. Preschool enrolments will not be accepted before 8 June.

Kind regards,

Margaret Creagh

Principal

Positive Behaviour for Learning

Early this year, Canley Vale Public School began the process of having a whole school Positive Behaviour for Learning initiative which will, over the next 2 years, see the development of a framework which will support and encourage all students to do their best at school. Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL) is a framework that creates and sustains safe and effective schools. Emphasis is placed on prevention of problem behaviour and the reinforcement of pro-social skills which leads to engaged learning.

More recently we surveyed our students, parents, and staff on what would be the best mascot to represent this initiative. We can now finally reveal that the 'Goanna' is the winning mascot. The Goanna was chosen because it is significant to the Dharug people who are the traditional custodian of the land on which we learn every day. The Goanna will encourage all our students to be Responsible, Safe, Respectful Learners in school and the community.

Our next task will be for our students to decide a name for our Goanna. Stay tuned!
