Swimming Scheme

A reminder to the 60 students who are attending the Swimming Scheme program next week (Week 11, Monday 4th - Friday 8th April)

Each child needs to bring a swimming costume, towel, hat, plastic bag and warm clothing on a cool day, as well as a change of underwear for the remainder of the school day. As instruction takes place in an outdoor pool, it is recommended that students use adequate sun protection, water-resistant sunscreen and a rash shirt. Students will change into their swimming gear at the pool. They will be travelling by bus to and from Revesby pool each day.

Mr Palmer and Miss Lombe will be accompanying.

The Inclusive, Engaging and Respectful (IER) Schools package

Inclusive, Engaging New policies, procedures and framework to keep students engaged in learning at school  was announced in February this year by NSW Minister for Education and Early Learning, Hon Sarah Mitchell.

It centres on three new policies and procedures and a framework that together set the guidelines for how we ensure all children and young people can learn through public education in a safe and engaging way.  The IER Schools package includes the:

  • Inclusive Education Policy for students with disability
  • Student Behaviour Policy and Procedures
  • Restrictive Practices Framework and Restrictive Practices Reduction and Elimination Policy and Procedures.

With these new policies, we want all students to:

  • be included in all aspects of school life and supported to learn to their fullest capability
  • be supported in engaging, respectful, and effective classrooms with positive and inclusive practices
  • feel welcomed, valued and safe in our schools and classroom

Two of the policies are new: the Inclusive Education Policy; and the Restrictive Practices Framework and policy.  Both clarify existing legal obligations, effective, appropriate and prohibited practices, and the rights of students, parents and carers.

The Student Behaviour Policy replaces the Student Discipline in Government Schools and Suspension and Expulsion Policy.  The key change is the approach all NSW public schools will take to address disruptive or inappropriate behaviour by a student. The duration of a suspension will be reduced along with the number of suspensions across a school year.  Every school will be able to draw on the support of a range of staff including behaviour specialists to effectively address issues resulting in these behaviours in order to prevent future escalations. We will continue to work closely with you and all our families.

It does not mean, however, that students who are violent or seriously disrupt the learning and wellbeing of others will be kept at school.  Any student who puts the safety of other students, teachers and staff or visitors at risk of harm – will be suspended until it is safe for them to return.

These new policies become operational from the start of Term 2 this year. The staff and I are reviewing our current approach to all of the areas covered by these policies, and wish to share any changes we believe need to made with you next term.

Our school already takes a strong, positive student-centred approach, but we want to work with you to ensure, together, every student has the right support at the right time to help them grow into confident, resilient adults.

Panania North Green Machine 2022

A few awesome projects are underway with the Green Machine at the school.  Last year, the school was awarded a grant from Woolworths to undertake a sustainability project with students. We have decided that we are going to build a 'frog bog' in the busy bee garden. Australian frogs are declining extremely fast in Australia (and around the world) due to a variety of factors such as pollution, habitat loss from farming, livestock destroying natural waterways and a nasty introduced pest called chytrid fungus. We have over 200 species in Australia, many of which are in decline and vulnerable to extinction. Students will be taking part in designing and building an area for the frogs to live, with lots of shade, a pond and restored native vegetation. We hope to attract some frogs to the pond to rest, breed and allow the kids to watch and learn about them.We have also been lucky enough to be provided with lots of seeds, which are currently being planted in the school. We hope to sell some of the fresh fruit and vegetables back to parents over the next few terms.

NSW Police Legacy Child Safety Handbook

The Child Safety Handbook has been produced by NSW Police Legacy, together with its partners, for over 11 years. It aims to raise awareness about risks to children and steps that can be taken to protect and keep them safe.

The Handbook has the support of the NSW Government and of the NSW Governor, Her Excellency the Honourable Margaret Beazley AO QC, the Patron of NSW Police Legacy.

It is hoped that all parents of primary school students in NSW aged 5 to 7 years old will receive access to a free digital copy of the Handbook.
