Repairs to Retaining Wall

The retaining wall along the fence line bordering the South Street playground and Drummoyne PS is being repaired with the work commencing on Monday 17th April.  The work will take 8-10 weeks.

With the approval of Council, temporary fencing will be erected on South Street parallel to our school's fence line but will reduce the amount of playground area available to the community including one of the cricket nets. There will not be access to the school through the South Street gate during this time.

For morning drop-offs, parents of kindergarten students are asked to drop their children off at the Thompson Street gate. For the afternoon pick-up, kindergarten parents are asked to come into the school grounds and wait under the kindergarten COLA near the coloured kindy lunch tables.

FROM THE DEPUTY'S DESK

Parent Teacher Interviews

Thank you to every parent and carer who has booked in for a parent teacher interview next week (or has already had an interview with their child's class teacher). The total number of interviews for all classes is 450 which is a wonderful response from our parent community.

The venues for face to face interviews are included below. Primary students participating in 3-way interviews will meet parents at the venue for the interview.

Please sign in at the school office when you arrive using the QR code or school check-in IPad.

We look forward to seeing you at DPS next week.

Leah Russ

Assistant Principal

ANZAC Day

ANZAC Day falls during the upcoming school holidays. Classes will acknowledge this solemn occasion with lessons prior to the holidays. Additionally, members of our prefect body will represent our school at the Five Dock RSL march, to be held on Sunday 23 April.

The primary classes will then come together on Wednesday 26 April (first day back for students) for a prefect-led 3-6 ANZAC assembly to be held at 9.45am in the hall.

All members of the community are welcome to attend, and students are invited to wear a red poppy or a sprig of rosemary on their shirts for the school ceremony.

As part of their inquiry into the significance of ANZAC Day, class 5/6M researched the involvement of animals in war time.  Did you know that Australian War Memorial Organisation (AWAMO) has issued a purple poppy?

In Australia, February 24 is set aside as Purple Poppy Day, as a reminder that animals have and continue to serve and acknowledge those creatures that have died during times of conflict.

COVID SAFETY UPDATES

COVID-smart measures in schools

NSW Health advise that COVID will continue to present a health risk to the community. Accordingly, schools will implement baseline COVID-smart measures to help reduce the risk of transmission for students and staff members. These key COVID-smart measures include:

  • staying home and getting tested if unwell, and only attending school when symptom free

  • rapid antigen testing for symptomatic students and staff. People exposed to COVID-19 should follow NSW Health guidanceExternal link and test to identify infection early even if they are not experiencing any symptoms.

  • strongly encouraging COVID-19 vaccinations for students, staff and their families, including a booster shot (when eligible) and maintaining double dose vaccination requirements for staff who work in an SSP

  • good hygiene practices including regular hand washing with soap and warm water and/or use of hand sanitiser

  • maintaining natural ventilation, with consideration of local environmental circumstances

  • boosted cleaning during the day, with particular attention given to high touch surface areas
  • wearing a mask for all staff and visitors when working with or visiting Schools for Specific Purposes (SSPs), support units or schools with students who are at greater risk of serious illness should they contract COVID-19 particularly indoors and when physical distancing is not possible

  • assessing risk and applying appropriate safeguards across activities and events

COVID reporting

It is important for our community to register their positive RAT result to Service NSW to access NSW Health support including antiviral medicines if they are eligible.

Greek Easter Biscuits

This week at Drummoyne, Greek Language students enjoyed making Greek Easter biscuits called Kουλουράκια. (Koulourakia)

Kουλουράκια (Koulourakia) are butter based biscuits and come in certain traditional shapes (including a braid, a figure eight, a 'lifebuoy' circle and an s-shaped 'snake' with two swirls at either end).

Koulourakia are traditionally made at Easter time as they contain several ingredients that are forbidden during Great Lent such as eggs and butter.

If you decide to make some Koulourakia for Easter, they are best enjoyed with morning coffee or afternoon tea. Dunking is encouraged!

HELPING YOUR CHILD WITH THE NEW CURRICULUM

A focus on Phonic Knowledge & Reading Fluency

In the accompanying graphic are the six essential skills that need to be taught for children to learn to read.

Letter-sound knowledge is also known as phonics knowledge. Phonics is concerned with sound-letter relationships in written words and builds upon a foundation of language and phonological awareness. Phonics instruction helps children learn the relationship between letters of the written language and the sounds of the spoken language. Research suggests an explicit, synthetic phonics approach (blending and segmenting phonemes) is the most efficient way to teach phonics.

Reading fluency is focused on developing a reading style that is smooth and expressive. Fluent readers are able to read orally with appropriate speed, accuracy, and proper expression. Fluency is the ability to read as well as we speak and to make sense of the text without having to stop and decode each word.

How can I support my child’s reading when they are reading decodable text?

It is important that a child does not randomly guess or use the pictures to work out unknown words. Focus should be on the letters and sounds, and the process of blending those together to read the word.

Some key features when supporting the reading process:

  • Use a tracking finger to hold the position of reading and have your child slide it along as they read.
  • If an error is made, ask your child to try decoding the word again. Then re-read the complete sentence will assist with fluency and understanding.
  • If your child forgets the sounds when decoding, click on the word to hear the text being read aloud.
  • At the end of each page, click the ‘read to me’ button to check accuracy and hear the text being read aloud.
  • At the end of the book use the comprehension questions to check for understanding and to discuss the story.
  • Celebrate each book and the effort your child has just given!

Assistant Principal Curriculum & Instruction.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Easter hat parade on Thursday 6 April

We will be celebrating the end of the term and Easter with an Easter hat parade. Families and friends are warmly welcome to attend.

Date: Thursday 6th April

Time: 2.20pm - 3.10pm

Venue: North playground

Primary students are asked to bring a hat they have made at home. Students in K-2 will be making their hats at school. More information about hat making at school will be sent home by classroom teachers via Seesaw. To prevent waste and plastic ending up in the streets that surround the school, all students are strongly encouraged to decorate a hat they already own using recycled materials.

Please note students will be dismissed from their classroom at 3.20pm following normal routines.

Entry to opportunity classes in Year 5 in 2024

Current year 4 students may apply for entry to an opportunity class in Year 5 in 2024.

Opportunity classes cater for high potential and intellectually gifted students.

They help students learn by:

  • grouping them with other gifted students
  • using specialised teaching methods so students can learn concepts in more detail and more quickly
  • supporting their wellbeing needs.

Most students in opportunity classes enjoy learning more when their classmates have similar abilities and interests. Opportunity classes are unzoned so you can apply no matter where you live.

Applications are open from 30 March 2023 – 15 May 2023 and students will sit the Opportunity Class Placement Test on Thursday 27 July 2023.

Please click on the attached document for all the details.

PSSA zone AFL trials

Congratulations to Ned Lea and Jack Cameron on being selected to trial for the Sydney East AFL team.

Jack Cameron was successful and will complete in the State carnival at Batemans Bay later in the year. We're super proud of both boys!

Amanda Champion

Inner West PSSA zone netball trials

Yesterday afternoon three girls, namely: Gabrielle 5/6P, Juliette 5/6O and Lola 4/5K, represented DPS at the Inner West PSSA Zone netball trials. With 22 other students from around the area trialing and only 9 students being chosen to go to the regional competition, it was tough!

The girls had fun and played their hardest! Its always tough when you are changing positions and playing with other students you haven't played with before. All the girls did extremely well.

Congratulations goes to Gabrielle and Juliette who were successful at the trials and will represent Drummoyne and Inner West PSSA at the regional competition on 29th May. Good luck girls!

GENERAL NEWS

2023 school travel applications are now open

Students who need a School Opal card or travel pass for 2023, can now apply.

A new application will need to be submitted if they are applying for the first time, or if they are requesting an additional travel entitlement as a result of a new shared parental responsibility situation (e.g. joint custody). Students who change address, school, campus location, have repeated a year or received an expiry notification from Transport for NSW for their school travel entitlement should renew or update their details before the end of term 4. This will ensure that schools can endorse applications, and entitlements remain valid for the start of the 2023 school year.

Students in the Opal network applying for an Opal card for the first time will receive their Student Opal card at their nominated postal address. Cards will be mailed out from January 2023.

For further details please see the attachment below.

Please label everything!

Please ensure your child’s name is permanently and clearly labelled on belongings such as school hats, jackets, lunch boxes, drink bottles and school bags.
