Dear Parents/Carers,
NAPLAN
Over the last week and a half, all Year 3 and Year 5 students have completed the four NAPLAN assessments (Writing, Reading, Language Conventions and Numeracy) for this year. The results will be sent to school in Term 3 and then we will send them home in sealed envelopes with your children.
Well done to all students who arrived on time and tried their best in all assessments.
Attendance SMS Absences
Families may have been receiving SMS messages over the last 2 weeks if your child or children have been either absent from school or late arriving to school. Parents/Carers will only receive the text message if the school has not been previously notified that your child is away or if you do not accompany your child to the office to explain why they are late. The text message will start with Canley Vale PS and identify your child and class. The school will review the practice of sending text messages to alert parents of absences, at the end of the school year.
Attendance at school is a legal requirement. It is a school’s legal responsibility to record the absence each day and then notify parents and carers if a child is away. It is then the responsibility of a parent/carer to explain the absence whether it be a full day or a partial day of attendance.
School starts at 8:50am and finishes at 2:50pm. Please ensure your children are at school on time ready for their lessons to start and are picked up on time.
SMS messages will be sent after 10am each day, providing time for parents to notify the school of their child’s absence. You can reply by return text with your child’s name, class and the reason for their absence. There are a variety of other ways to inform the school of your child’s absence:
- Email – canleyvale-p.school@det.nsw.edu.au
- Phone – 9724 1555
- Seesaw – direct to the class teacher
- Skoolbag App
Please understand that the messages sent through Seesaw go to the classroom teacher. The teacher will only see these messages before school or possibly at times during the day when the teacher has RFF. If you send a message through Seesaw between 8:30am and 10am there is the possibility the class teacher won’t see it until later in the day and you might still receive a text message.
P&C Meeting
Next Wednesday 25 May we will hold our next P&C meeting. This will take place in the Collaborative Space room after the assembly at about 9:05am. If you are unsure of where to go please meet at the flagpoles.
School of Excellence
Last Friday I attended a meeting for school principals from 60 different schools around the Fairfield and Liverpool area. The Executive Director of Metropolitan South and West, Ms Deb Summerhayes presented principals with a Certificate of Excellence. This was in recognition of the exceptional leadership demonstrated by the school community.
This certificate is to acknowledge every student, every staff member and every community member for their commitment and care throughout an extraordinary school year in 2021. I personally thank every member of our Canley Vale community for the way you kept your heads up, remained positive and endeavoured to continue learning for our students. A huge thank you to the leadership team who carefully planned and navigated through the year of 2021. We will display our special award in the front office.
Parents using Toilets of an Afternoon
I kindly ask that parents and carers only use the disabled toilets. There are two located around the school. Both are single rooms with locks. One is located near the lift between Block J and Block L, in front of Granata and the other is near the hall. Please do not go into the toilet blocks that are for students only.
COVID Notifications
The school will continue to put out notifications to the community when we are notified of a positive COVID case, involving either a student or staff member.
Families are reminded of the close contact regulations. If a student is a close contact of a positive COVID case they can return to school as long as they:
- Notify the school
- Take a RAT every morning for five days and it is negative
- Wear a mask
- Have no symptoms
Families must notify the school if they are close contacts and are returning to school or if they are remaining at home in isolation. If a student/s remain at home, they will be marked flexible as long as a clearance certificate is provided upon return. Flexible is not counted as an absence. The clearance certificate will be in the name of the person who tested positive for COVID, and we need to know the relationship of that person to the child (eg Father, mother, sibling, etc)
If students are in isolation and are being marked as flexible, they need to be engaging in school related tasks during the school day. The Department of Education have digital learning packs available for all preschool and primary aged children. Please click on the link to see what is available. https://education.nsw.gov.au/teaching-and-learning/learning-from-home/learning-at-home/2022-digital-learning-packs
If a family would like more RAT kits because they have been close contacts, please speak to the school office. We have a small supply still available for use for our students.
Gymnastics
This week our Years 3-6 students started a gymnastics program. There are a few students who have still to make the payment for this program. It is not too late to get the payment into the school office. This program will go until the end of the term and then a few more weeks after that. This program has been reduced in cost by the school and a sports grant that we applied for.
Year 6 Recovery Camp to Jindabyne
A very special announcement was made yesterday at our K-6 assembly. Year 6 students have the opportunity to attend a 3-day camp to Jindabyne Sport and Recreation Centre in late June at NO COST. A few schools in the Fairfield area have been randomly selected to attend a camp and Canley Vale PS is one of the lucky ones. The students will receive more details soon and they were very excited to hear they get the chance to go to the snow.
Kindergarten Enrolments 2023
We are now accepting enrolments for Kindergarten 2023. If your child turns 5 before 31 July 2023 you are able to request an enrolment package from the school office. All families within our school intake zone will be accepted, provided all documentation is submitted.
Families who are out of our school area can request an ‘Out of Area’ application package and complete an enrolment form. The ‘Out of Area’ panel will meet regularly in Term 3 to discuss these applications and make decisions of acceptance or non-acceptance.
If parents have questions regarding enrolment procedures and school intake areas, please make an appointment at the school office to speak with the Principal or a Deputy Principal.
Preschool Enrolments 2023
From Wednesday 25 May 2022 we will be distributing enrolment packages to families seeking a place in our preschool for their child in 2023. Our preschool is a Department of Education preschool and is for children the year before they attend Kindergarten. We will have 80 places available in 2023. Enrolment applications are due back by Wednesday 8 June 2022 so that places for 2023 can be assigned as soon as possible. Parents will then be able to plan work and childcare arrangements accordingly. Preschool enrolments will not be accepted before 8 June.
Second Hand Uniform Stall
We will have a second-hand uniform stall on Tuesday morning (24 May) at the front of the school from 8:30am – 9:30am. All items will be $5 each. The items range in sizes. Cash is preferred but Eftpos is available.
Peer Support
Peer Support will start this week for all our students K-6 and staff, every Friday. Year 5 and 6 students will lead groups of 8-10 students in mini-lessons. The groups will be the same every Friday to enable the students to get to know their group members. The module of activities for this year will be ‘Living Positively’. This focuses on optimism and being able to identify strengths within themselves. This is a great initiative to build community spirit within our school.
Parents attending OOSHClub
A friendly reminder to all parents and carers dropping their children off or picking them up from OOSHClub of a morning and/or afternoon that you are using the staff car park to access the hall and you should be driving slowly and carefully. This is for everyone’s safety – staff, students and parents. Thank you.
