PRINCIPAL’S THOUGHTS

New Infants Playground

A feature of the new adventure playground is a yarning circle (see photo).  Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples have been using yarning circles for thousands of years as a place to talk, share, educate and have a yarn together.  It's a place to build respectful relationships and a space to enrich students' learning. We will use this feature of the playground to build the knowledge, understanding and respect for our First Nations people.

Sincere Thanks

Thank you to every parent who has made time this week to join us for the virtual parent information sessions. The feedback from parents has been very positive and very much appreciated by our teachers. Your attendance sends a strong message of the importance of your child's education and your support of the school.

The National Day of Action against Bullying and Violence

The National Day of Action against Bullying and Violence, to be held on 18th March, is an important day in our school calendar to join with other schools across Australia to say “Bullying. No Way!”

We are putting our bullying prevention initiatives in the spotlight and calling on our school community to stand with us. Please also support your child's attendance at the 'Backflips Against Bullying' incursion on 8 March (see note).

Our school anti-bullying plan can be found on our website at:

Student Attendance - the importance of arriving to school on time

Arriving at school and class on time:

  • Ensures that students do not miss out on important learning activities scheduled early in the day
  • Helps students learn the importance of punctuality and routine
  • Give students time to greet their friends before class
  • Reduces classroom disruption

Lateness is recorded as a partial absence and must be explained by parents. Please support your child to arrive at school on time, ready to learn each day. This will set them up for success later in life.

SMS Messaging

In an effort to make it easier for parents to notify the school of a student absence, we are using SMS messaging. At 10am each morning, if your child has been marked absent, you will receive an SMS message to your phone. You will then be able to respond via return SMS, phonecall, email or reply via Skoolbag with the reason for your child's absence.

If you have documentation supporting the absence (such as a medical certificate or negative COVID test result), please send it to school with your child when they return.

Change of Contact Details

To ensure that the school is able to contact families, would you please let us know if there have been any changes to your home address, email address or phone contact details over the Christmas break.

You can do this by contacting the school office or emailing: drummoyne-p.school@det.nsw.edu.au

Thank you for staying in touch with us.

ASPIRE leadership conference

On Monday, Year 6 enjoyed participating in an important day of leadership, reinforcing the message of ‘Leading Without a Badge’. Students engaged in team-building exercises and reflected upon their journey as school leaders in 2022. The ASPIRE leadership conference has been a valuable tool for our Year 6 cohort (see photos).

COVID SAFETY UPDATES

Please refer to the alert sent home on Thursday in relation to the changes in school settings from Monday.

Walk-in Vaccination Clinics

NSW Health is promoting their Walk-in COVID-19 vaccination weekends, happening every weekend from Saturday 12 February to Sunday 6 March. Anyone eligible for a vaccine can walk into a clinic without a booking and get vaccinated. Check  NSW Health’s Facebook post on your social media channels. For more information about vaccinations for children refer to the Q&A video from NSW Health

Rapid Antigen Testing - Saliva test

From Monday we move to symptomatic testing. RAT kits were sent home on Thursday.  This time you will receive saliva RATs. For saliva tests, students must not eat or drink for 30 minutes before taking the saliva test.

We will continue to send home a note when there has been a positive case on site, indicating the year cohort of students and/or staff involved.

It was great to finally see all our young musicians face-to-face this week with lessons and rehearsals having resumed. Just a quick reminder - it is definitely not too late to enroll for the band. We still have positions available on: flute, clarinet, saxophone, trumpet, trombone.
If you would like to enroll, and would like more information you can contact myself by email on kevin@directionsinmusic.com.au or visit our website www.directionsinmusic.com.au.
I’m really looking forward to a great year of music in our school!

Students from class 5C worked in small groups to create a composition based on a theme for percussion and tuned instruments after listening to Fingal's Cave by Mendelssohn - a piece about the seaside.

STEAM

In the STEAM Room with Mr Sutton

Term 1, week 5

Well, who’d have thought? We’ve reached the end of week 5, and we all remain at school, continuing along each of our own, very personal learning paths. What’s more, with the mandatory wearing of masks indoors to come to an end, we’ll be able to see what our teachers look like from the nostrils down (time to shave teachers).

Each week, through a range of texts, I’ll attempt to find time to share what we’ve been up to in the STEAM Room. Including photographs, student quotes, and written reflections from myself.

Stage 3

With the official commencement of our learning programs at the beginning of this week, Stage 3 has been acquiring knowledge and understanding in the way in which an electrical device (a bulb) is connected to an energy source (a battery) using wires. Students have learnt to use appropriate tools to cut and strip wires.

The properties of different types of circuits have been investigated. Students have learnt:

●      How to prevent short circuits;

●      How to build a simple circuit;

●      The purposes of different types of switches.

●      How to build two different types of circuit for two electrical devices (a series circuit and a parallel circuit). Students observed the differences in the electrical devices within each circuit.

Stage 2

Students in years 3 and 4 have begun to explore the forces around us. Through directed play, students have observed and felt the ‘magic’ of magnetism, and the effects of gravity on our daily lives.

Students are beginning to understand:

●      That forces are pushes or pulls acting upon objects;

●      That forces can change the direction, change the shape or change the speed of an object;

●      That forces can be contact or non-contact forces.

Questions have been asked, predictions made, problems solved in creative and imaginative ways. By the end of week 5, students are preparing to design, plan and carry out purposeful investigations that may, or may not, answer their many questions.

If you have any questions about anything STEAM related, please don’t hesitate to contact me at: ewan.sutton2@det.nsw.edu.au

OFFICE NEWS

School Photo Day

Class photos and individual portraits will be taken on Tuesday 8 March. The photo order envelopes were sent home this week. Each child is asked to hand in their order envelope at the office prior to photo day.

Please ensure full school uniform is worn on the day and that students are looking neat and tidy.

Please update your year groups in Skoolbag ASAP

The school has updated the email addresses for Skoolbag notifications to parents for 2022. However, you must now go into the skoolbag app and update which year group/s you are following this year to receive notifications that are for your child/ren.

Please do this in these simple steps

1. Open the Skoolbag app on your phone

2. On the home screen press on the Drummoyne Public School symbol in the top ribbon

3. Slide across to GROUPS, where you can then add or remove the year groups you wish to see on your app.

This will ensure that you see notifications that have been sent to specific year group/s, rather than only those sent to the whole school.

School Bus Travel for 2022

School Travel Passes

Students who need a School Opal card or travel pass but have not yet applied need to apply or update their details as soon as possible.

In the Opal network, students should travel with a Child/Youth Opal card until they receive their valid School Opal card. New Student Opal cards (including new Term Bus Passes) will be sent to the student’s nominated postal address within two weeks of their application being approved. .

Terms of Use

Students using Opal cards must tap on and tap off in line with the Opal terms of use. All students are required to comply with the Student code of conduct. The code of conduct aims to ensure the safety and well-being of school children and other passengers. It is important that parents ensure their child is aware of this, as failure to comply with the code of conduct can result in a suspension from travel.

Canteen volunteers needed

In order for the canteen to be able to offer a sausage sizzle on Fridays and pasta during the week, we desperately need volunteers. If you have half an hour or more to spare we would love to have your help.

Volunteers do need to be double vaccinated and wear a mask. When arriving at the school please show your certificate at the office and check in with the school QR code outside the office. To volunteer, please log in to your school24 account.

  • Click on Volunteers Roster in purple.
  • Choose month-click view roster.
  • Choose day and time. It’s so easy!

We are looking forward to having your company and help plus your children will be so excited to see you too!

P&C ANNOUNCEMENTS

2022 Class parents

We have a new process for obtaining Class Parents this year that we hope will be a smoother and faster process, and get us all connected a lot sooner. The role of the Class Parent is to help facilitate communication among parents via a class WhatsApp group, for sharing information, organising out of school social gatherings and coordinating a teacher gift at the end of the year. The Class Parent will also be the point of contact for the P&C when assistance for events and fundraising is required throughout the year.

We need a Class Parent for EACH CLASS.  This is not an overly time consuming role and perfect if you find your time does not lend itself to contributing in other ways such as in the Canteen or at the Carnival. It's also a great way to get to know other parents.

If you would like to nominate yourself for Class Parent, please complete the form via the following link:
