Principal's Message

Hello to Students, Parents, Staff and Friends of St Matthew’s,

WELCOME BACK

Welcome back everyone, I hope you all had a lovely Easter with your families and friends and the great weather during the holidays provided you with lots of outdoor fun and games.

Last week, although being a short week was an extremely busy one with our Anzac Day Ceremony (My sincere thanks to Mr Kavanagh for organising this) and also the Grade 3’s heading off to Werribee Open Range Zoo and the Grade 6’s going to Moorabbin Air Museum as part of their Aviation Inquiry Unit. Both grades came back with beaming smiles and saying, “It was the best excursion ever.” (My sincere thanks to Mrs White for organising these).

Also 12 of our junior grade teachers headed off to the first of three days of professional learning at the Catholic Leadership Centre for MSoL – Mathematics Sequence of Learning. This will certainly assist them greatly in their understanding and implementation of the sequence of Maths from Grades Prep – 2. (Thank you once again to Mrs White for organising this great PD).

PREP WELCOME MASS & PICNIC

I won’t steal Mr Howden’s thunder as she has written a wonderful summary of last Saturday night’s Prep Welcome Mass and Picnic. All I will say is that it was well attended and a very enjoyable evening had by all. Please read Mrs Howden’s summary further into the newsletter.

YEAR PREP – 6 ENROLMENTS ARE OPEN FOR 2023

We know that a number of families were unable to attend our school tours during Catholic education week, but we can arrange other times, which suit both prospective parents and the school.

So please ring the office on 9359 5423 to book yourself in, ask Almoza and she will confer with myself and I am sure we can accommodate a mutual time for both parties.

Also families already at St Matthew’s who have younger siblings we need to know so please come in and get an enrolment package, fill it out and return it as soon as possible. We have to start planning for 2023 now so that we can put all things in place by late this year in readiness for the following year.

DATES TO KEEP IN MIND

Friday 10th June – Staff Professional Development Day – NO SCHOOL FOR STUDENTS

Monday 13th June – Queen’s Birthday Holiday – NO SCHOOL FOR STUDENTS & STAFF

Once again please remember in your prayers those loved ones affected by COVID and also all the displaced Men, Women and Children (alive and deceased) in the Ukraine.

Prep Welcome Mass and Picnic

What a wonderful turn out for the Prep Welcome Mass and Picnic, lots of fun was had by all and the parents got to meet many other prep parents, both old and new to the school. The Mass was officiated by Father Edwin Agis who has stepped in while Father Boy is on leave to visit his family in the Philippines. It was an absolute joy to hear everyone sing along to the hymns and say the responses – it really has been a long time to have the community back into the church. The prep children stood up on the altar and performed a Hymn called “If I were a Butterfly” and they were magnificent and they most certainly also enjoyed seeing themselves on the screen.

After Mass, everyone adjourned to the hall, where the tables and chairs were ready and the buzz was electric. Families joining each other, chatting and lots of laughter was to be seen. The children joined the teachers for some fun games such as “What’s the time Mr Wolf”, “Dead Ant”, “Simon Says” and “Statues”.

Congratulations to all the families who attended you made it a wonderful night – thank you.

LEARNING AND TEACHING

Term 2 Inquiry Is All About Science!!!!

This term each grade is focussing on a different way that Science helps us to understand our world. We have some really exciting excursions and incursions planned that will give our students some hands-on experience to get them thinking. At the end of the term we will be putting on a Science Expo to share our learning. More information will be coming about when, where and how that will happen. The Science inquiries for each grade are;

GRADESCIENCE ENQUIRY
PREPMighty Minibeasts
1My Senses
2Toys in Motion
3Animals Around the World
4Our Changing Planet
5Everyday Science
6Learn to Fly

Grade 2 Incursion - Forces Friction and Movement

In week 1 the Grade 2’s had an incursion called “Forces, Friction and Movement”. The presenter Ben told us about Isaac Newton and how he developed ideas about forces like pushing and pulling. The students learnt that a bed of nails is actually LESS likely to pop a balloon than a single nail. We got to do experiments using magnets, propellers, water tornadoes, spinning wheels, air rockets and spinning tops.

“I learnt about Science that is Physics. Ben told us how Isaac Newton made new types of Maths and the Three Laws of Motion.”

Krishiv Paudel

“I enjoyed it when we got to try out different science experiments like the spiky chair with nails. If you sit on the middle it doesn't hurt but one pin would hurt.” (No-one did this!)

Natalie Makdesi

“The ping pong pop was fun because it went about up twenty metres.”

Raymon Jamil

“I learnt about how you do science experiments like the pin-art where you have to put your hand on it and you see your handprint.”

PERSONAL AND SOCIAL CAPABILITIES

This week I will be attending the level planning sessions with the teachers, and going over the Personal Social Capabilities from the Vic Curriculum. We will be working on what part of the You Can Do It program each level will focus on this term. Keep your eye on the newsletter over the term as we highlight what each level are working on to develop the Social and Emotional skills of our children.
