Principal's Message

Dear Parents

As we head to the end of the term I would like to thank you all for your ongoing support of our school. There have been so many high points where we have been able to celebrate the successes of our students and in this edition of the newsletter I would light to highlight the following people. Every day I am thankful to have come to Punchbowl Public School as the Principal and these students remind me of why our school is so special and exciting.

Khadijah and Nelly came to visit me a couple of weeks ago with some terrific writing and I was very impressed by their ability to take the ideas from their minds and transfer them onto paper in such an exciting way

Khadijah

Khadijah’s writing starts with ‘a hook’ and she uses this writing technique to grab the reader’s attention so that they remain interested and want to keep on reading. Her writing is very creative and has many different sentence types and questions. She loves writing because she has the opportunity to explore different worlds. Khadijah enjoys trying to make the reader laugh.

Nelly

Nelly is also a terrific author and has produced a number of beautifully written texts that show both her imagination and ability to engage the reader. Nelly enjoys editing and is skilled at self-reflecting on her work so that there is improvement each time she writes. Nelly is currently focusing on improving her spelling and producing texts of increasing complexity. Nelly also loves to read, particularly books about magic and adventures. She is passionate about reading!

In Preschool, our children are learning all about numbers to 5. We are very lucky that lots of our children come to preschool being able to count but in this photograph you can see that we are really trying to develop a deep understanding of ‘five’ in the many ways it can be represented – as fingers on our hand, as a dice pattern, the number five, five toys etc. This is an important understanding for all children but it is essential that we start early so that our students are the best mathematicians they can be.

Last Friday night these four amazing students from K/6K and K/6G danced as part of an ensemble group at the Seymour Centre! Wow! What a night it was and our students were absolutely incredible – I’m so proud of them. It was a terrific performance and a wonderful opportunity to showcase the talents of our students in an outstanding performance space. Congratulations to you all!

NAIDOC Week

Over the upcoming holiday period from 7-14 July Australia will celebrate National Aboriginal and Islander Day Observance Committee (NAIDOC) Week. This is an important week in the annual calendar for Australia as we pause to celebrate and acknowledge the rich and enduring Aboriginal culture. It is also a time when we reflect on the fact that we are able to live in this beautiful country because Aboriginal people took care of the land for over 65,000 years. I encourage you to become involved in the many community events being held around the local area. As a school we will celebrate NAIDOC when we return to school in Term 3.

I will be in touch at the beginning of next term to let you know about some changes to staffing so please keep abreast of all SkoolBag notifications. In the meantime, I hope everyone has a lovely winter break and I look forward to seeing everyone when students return on Tuesday 23 July.

Please continue to take good care of one another and don’t forget to remind people who you are meeting when you are out and about to enrol both in our outstanding preschool and primary school for 2020.

Dace Elletson

Principal

SaCC News

On Monday 24th June, parents and community members attended a special morning tea as part of our Refugee Week celebrations in the SaCC. This was an opportunity to meet new people and share new stories from their homeland and acknowledge their contribution to our country. Mark Goudkamp, Refugee Support Leader attended to share information and answer questions from our community.

The SaCC planner for Term 3 will be available soon. Please keep an eye out on Skoolbag for updates.

Life Education

During Term 3 all students from Preschool to Year 6 will have the opportunity to attend Life Education lessons. These lessons cover outcomes in the NSW PD/H/PE syllabus. Each session is designed to excite and intrigue children of all ages, which captures their imagination and has a lasting impact! Joined by Life Education's loveable mascot Healthy Harold the educators bring to life lessons that empower children to make safer and healthier choices, now and in the future.

The usual cost for the incursion is $10 per student. The Lantern Club Roselands has generously contributed towards the cost of this program for our school and the cost will be $5 per student. We thank the Lantern Club Roselands for their ongoing support of our school.

Notes will go home with all students. These must be completed and returned with payment to the office.

Athletics Carnival

All students in Preschool to Year 2 will be participating in the annual Athletics Carnival.

Parents are invited and encouraged to attend and watch their child participate.

The P-2 Carnival will be held on the School Field from 9:00am- 1:00pm on Thursday 25 July. Students need to wear sports shoes and their house colour.

If you have any questions please speak to your child's teacher.

Stage 2 and 3 students will have the opportunity to take part in the Punchbowl Public School Athletics carnival held at Campbell Oval on Thursday 25th July.

The Punchbowl Public School Athletics carnival is part of the PDHPE curriculum. All students from Years 3-6 are expected to attend. The day will consist of a wide variety of field and track events and is also a pathway to compete at the Zone Athletics carnival later in the year.

Parents are invited to come along.  The P&C will be operating a canteen on the day. More information will follow.

Teacher Professional Learning- Mathematics

Student learning is at the centre of everything we do at Punchbowl Public School and we are always looking at innovative ways to engage in teaching and learning. On Thursday 13th June all staff participated in an evening of Professional Learning where members of each stage shared their journey of the Big Ideas in Number project we've been undertaking as a school. It was a wonderful opportunity to see the learning all students are accessing across the school from Preschool to Year 6. Teacher professional Learning (TPL) encourages the development of new ways of thinking and new approaches to teaching which leads to improvement in student learning outcomes.

Vision Testing

During Term 3 all students from K-6 at Punchbowl Public School are able to access comprehensive bulk billed (through Medicare) eye examinations at the school. This is offered through See Straight who have provided this service to our school community over the last 4 years.

Each student tested receives a letter summarising the findings and if required a free pair of prescription glasses.

Parents must complete the form either online through Skoolbag (E-Forms) or by asking for a printed copy from the office.

More information is available on the SkoolBag app.

Preschool

As part of the whole school learning on number talks, the preschool children have been learning different ways numbers can be represented and how numbers can be broken into smaller parts  I.e. 2 and 3 makes 5

Recently, we have been focusing on the number 5 and exploring different resources to further their understanding of the number 5. They have enjoyed using a variety of resources and are beginning to use some mathematical language in their conversations with their friends – how exciting!

K-6K and K-6G

In K-6K and K-6G, we have been working hard in mathematics! We have been learning about collecting data and organising it into graphs, using hands on materials.

This term K6K and K6G participated in gymnastics at the YMCA Revesby. Throughout the  term we participated in different activities focusing on our core body strength and balance. We worked with balance beams, parallel bars and ring frames. We also had the opportunity to showcase our strength on the rock climbing wall. For our last session we were rewarded with fun play on the jumping castle. Thank you to all the staff from our school and YMCA for organising the gymnastics sessions for us. We had so much fun!

Kindergarten

This term the Kindergarten teachers have provided opportunities for parents to learn ways to support their children with Literacy and Numeracy. Thank you to all the parents who took the time to be part of these workshops. If you missed out on attending below are some ideas and key messages from the sessions.

Literacy

Children’s literacy development can be improved when parents encourage learning through everyday activities such as;

  • Children watching and listening to parents read
  • Children reading and talking about stories with parent
  • Discussing ideas in books
  • Writing shopping lists
  • Labelling

Numeracy

  • Developing a strong number sense of numbers 0-9 that will lay a strong foundation for later numeracy learning.
  • Making mathematics learning part of our everyday lives.
  • Counting steps or pegs or any other household items
  • When shopping asking children to count items to be bought, making comparisons- do we have more apples or oranges?
  • Cooking - measuring quantities and discussing time.
  • Driving - reading numbers in the environment like road signs, on cars.

100 Days of Kindergarten

Congratulations to all of our Kindergarten students on reaching 100 days of Kindy! These first 100 days have been filled with fun new friendships,  exciting learning and amazing achievements. To celebrate, Kindergarten had a special assembly and morning tea with their parents, teachers and Preschool. Thank you to Mrs Robinson and the rest of the Kindergarten Teachers for organising such a special day.

Stage 1

Students in Stage 1 have been developing their understanding of numbers by participating in daily number talks. They have been developing a deep understanding of numbers 0-9 by participating in dot talks and looking for chunks of information. PDHPE - Mr Shearer

Stage 1 students have been participating in Maths & Movement during PDHPE lessons.  This program uses multi-sensory learning approaches to teach students valuable skills to succeed in their school’s math curricula. Math & Movement recognises that students learn through different styles which is why our exercises include teaching with visual, auditory, and kinesthetic elements.

Community Languages

Stage 2 Community Language students are learning the Arabic language through a variety of topics. The topic for term 2, has been ‘lifecycles’. Students have been learning about the stages of the lifecycle of a butterfly, bee and plants. To conclude this unit, they worked together to make grass heads! All students were very engaged and loved the experience.

Library News

We’ve been encouraging our students to complete the Premier’s Reading Challenge (PRC) 2019. They have been keen to borrow books from the PRC list and our newly arrived PRC resources are in high demand. During the fortnightly library sessions our students take delight in listening to new stories. It’s wonderful to witness that our Stage 3 boys can still be pleasantly surprised by fantastic books. Do take some time to talk to your child about the activities they do in the school library.

Returning to School for Term 3

Term 3 commences for all students on Tuesday 23 July.

If you are travelling overseas and your child will not be returning for school at the beginning of Term 3, it is important that you communicate this information with the school and complete an Application for Extended Leave form. Please speak to office staff as soon as possible if this is the case.

Student Health

If  your child has a health condition which may require support at school or when involved in school activities, for example, a school excursion it is important that the school is aware and current plans completed by a medical professional are supplied to the school.  This includes all students with Asthma plans.

We want to work with you to keep your child healthy and safe at school.  If you have any questions please make an appointment to see Mrs Kontakos, Assistant Principal Learning and Wellbeing.
