Term 4 - Week 2 (23 October, 2020)

Principal's Message

Dear St Mary's School Community

Gospel: Matthew: 22: 34-40

In Sunday’s Gospel, Jesus tells the Pharisees about the great commandments.   Like the Pharisees we often get overwhelmed by the number of rules.  School rules, traffic regulations, even the Church has rules!   Jesus summed up the Law in two great teachings of the Hebrew Scriptures:  Love God and love your neighbour.

COVID19 Restrictions

On Monday, the Premier announced that there will be no move to Phase 5 restrictions in the short term, while easing Phase 4 restrictions around entertainment venues.  Therefore, the 2m square rule for adults still applies at school.  This will impact on some school events in Term Four and while we will proceed with most – they will look different to previous years.  Information about each event will be sent home closer to the time.  In the meantime, Family Friday will not be occurring and we will not be able to have canteen helpers for the remainder of the term.  I ask that parents and caregivers are mindful of the 2-square metre rule in classrooms before and after school.  I appreciate that this may be disappointing but the health and wellbeing of our staff and students is of the utmost importance.  I thank you in advance for your continuing support and understanding.

AIM Dental Visit

The Kindy to Year Three classes were visited by AIM Dental on Tuesday morning.  Elle and Darci spoke to the students about developing good oral hygiene habits. The program covered many topics, including brushing and flossing, sweet snacks vs healthy snacks, promoting good oral hygiene at home and what to expect when you visit the dentist. This was done in a fun and interactive way!

Year Two Reading at Mass

The Year Two class will be reading at Mass on Sunday at 10.30am all are welcome to come along and support the students and Miss Piazzola.

God Bless and have a lovely weekend with your families,

Ms Adriana Coniglio

Principal

Religious News

First Reconciliation Parent Night

A big thank you to the Year Three students and parents who attended the Sacrament of Reconciliation Information Session after school on Thursday, 15th October. The students enjoyed listening about the sacrament and had discussions with their parents about what the sacrament involves. Thank you to Father Andrew for attending and for sharing his information with us.

Grandparents Morning

On Friday, 6th November, we will be having a Grandparents Morning at St Mary’s School. We will commence with a Liturgy in the Undercover Area at 10.15am, followed by morning tea for our Grandparents. Unfortunately, due to Covid-19 restrictions, we will not be able to have open classrooms. For catering purposes please ensure that you RSVP via the Skoolbag app.

Upcoming Liturgical Events

  • Year Two students are reading at Mass on Sunday, 25th October at 10.30am. It would be wonderful to see as many families at Mass as possible, to support Miss Piazzola and the students.

  • All Soul’s Day Liturgy will be held on Monday, 2nd November at 10.15am in the Undercover Area and presented by Year 4/5. Everyone is welcome and invited to attend.

Class News

Year Five/Six Class News

Wow! We are flying toward the end of the year and we are starting to realise that high school is looming for some of us. We have enjoyed a T20 Blast Cricket Cup this term with winners all round, lovely weather and great parent helpers. Year 6 students are busy finalizing their leavers book with memorable photos and events, which is a great way to remember all the amazing things we’ve done together this year. Year 5 students have begun preparing their head boy/girl speeches with Ms Coniglio but the nerves haven’t kicked in yet. Very soon we will begin practicing the end of year concert and graduation which will be here before we know it!

Kindy RE Corner

We have begun this term with an 'Under the Water' theme in Kindy. We have talked about how God made all the animals that live in the sea.  Some creatures are colourful, some creatures (like sharks) are scary and some creatures are funny to look at (like the pufferfish). God made all the sea creatures and each one has a special place in God’s world. We need to care for God’s world and we can do this by not throwing rubbish in the ocean, not catching little fish and looking after our water sources. Over the next few weeks we will be exploring more of God’s amazing creatures that live in the sea.

Digital Technologies

This term for Digital Technologies, there are lots of different activities planned.

The Pre Primary Class are learning about algorithms and loops.  They will be using their knowledge to code using the Daisy the Dinosaur App.

The Year One Class will be looking at collecting data and identifying what is included in a digital system.  They will be learning how to code the Blue Bots which have been purchased as the next step on from the Bee Bots.

The Year Two Class are looking at Input and Output devices.  They will be using the Lego WE DO 2 App and Lego to design and construct a toy.

The Year Three Class will be learning about the different parts of a computer.  They will be investigating a number of apps from Show Me, Pic Collage and the Scratch App.

The Year Four/Five Class will be revising parts of the computer.  They will be looking at Design Systems using a number of Apps including Show Me, Scratch and the Hopscotch App.

The Year Five/Six Class will be looking at ‘How to be safe online.’  They will be looking at Design Systems and incorporate their ideas to use the Minecraft Education App.

Sustainability

The Environmental Group will be busy this term! We were able to purchase the bins through a Landcare Grant.   Last term the Compost Bins were put together.  This term they are collecting food scraps to feed the worms and fill our compost bins.
