Dear Parents and Carers,
This term is flying by and many staff and community helpers are in full swing preparing for Term 4 and 2020. That's right 2020!
With many permanent staff choosing to continue working at other schools next year, I have put out an expression of interest to the state for class teacher positions to work at our awesome school. We hope that students will know who their class teacher will be and in what room they will be in before the end of the year.
Year 6 students, staff and parents have been busy preparing for their end of year graduation. It is hard to believe that our Year 6 students have less than 14 weeks of primary school left.
We have also established a Presentation Day committee and more information on the planned changes will be shared at the next P&C meeting, followed by the newsletter.
Last week I sat down with our Instructional Leaders, Mrs Bartlett and Miss Kellow. They shared some great data which shows that we have, on average, 70% of K-2 students reading at or above their reading level benchmarks. This is a great achievement, that needs to be shared as there is some innovative programs happening that are getting great results.
From the hive,
Mrs Nic Williams
Following the rules has brought the rewards. Your Dress Up Day is Thursday next week and the Canteen will be having hot dogs to make the day more special - more information to come! |

My favourite book: ‘The Giving Tree' by Shel Silverstein (1964)
My Grandma read this book to me over and over again when I was little. It has a really nice moral to the story. I still love reading it now!

The library looks flash with 6 new flower-shaped tables that match the recently purchased green and red chairs and our beautiful ‘Yarning’ rug. Students are using the new furniture to support engaged learning and tasks that require speaking.
How our new furniture supports learning in the library
‘Yarning’ rug – Our beautiful floor rug with the design ‘Seasons’ by artist Danielle Mate Sullivan is a place for having a yarn. Our students sit around the rug and share ideas and stories and at the end of library lessons, share their learning around the rug.
Flower tables and jazzy chairs – In bright and earthy colours, the shape of our tables and chairs supports our students to participate in engaged learning. Sometimes this looks like collaborative learning of project-based tasks where students problem-solve together. They might use technology, books, paper and pens while working with a friend. Sometimes, library learning looks like a rotation of literacy learning tasks.
Our guide, Narelle, explained the use of shadowing, sponging and the effect of using black and white in conjunction with colour to enhance and give depth to illustrations.
Each year, the Department of Education allocates funding to schools based on many factors. One of these is the socio-economic funding called FOEI (Family Occupation and Education Index).
Please don't forget to tell us if your situation changes e.g. if you were a nurse when you enrolled your child, and are now a stay-at-home mum, this will affect the amount of funding we receive in future.
Also, it is very important to let us know when your address, telephone or emergency contact details change - a simple phone call is all that is needed, or drop in to the office and let us know. There is also a "change of details" form on the Skoolbag app that you can use to notify of changes.
NSW Health have launched a state wide campaign about identifying the symptoms of meningococcal disease.
Meningococcal disease is caused by a bacterial infection that can lead to serious illness if not recognised and treated in time. While anyone can contract meningococcal disease, infection rates are higher in children aged 0 - 4 years and young people aged 15 - 24 years.
Do you know the symptoms of meningococcal disease?
Symptoms of meningococcal disease include:
* Sudden onset of fever
* Headache
* Neck stiffness
* Joint pain
* Dislike of bright lights
* Nausea
* Vomiting
* Irritability
* Rash of red-purple spots or bruises that doesn't disappear when pressure is applied. (A rash does not always appear or it may occur late in the disease).
Some or all of these symptoms may appear and can mimic other common illnesses. Symptoms usually occur suddenly and can get worse quickly, so it's important to seek urgent medical treatment.
Vaccination is the best way to prevent the spread. The NSW School vaccination program provides free vaccination against meningococcal disease for year 10 students in 2019. Students ages 15-16 can access free vaccine from their GP.
Act fast and seek medical advice quickly
People infected with meningococcal disease can become extremely unwell very quickly. People who could have meningococcal disease should seek urgent medical advice.
On the last day of Term 3, Friday 27 September, Year 6 are holding a mini Fete to raise funds for the Year 6 end of year gift to school. This is going to be combined with the SRC "casual clothes day" which will be a gold coin donation. More information on these two fun happenings will be sent home soon!
A huge thank you to our Murray High School umpires who helped out at PSSA every Friday during the winter PSSA season. We had umpires for AFL, netball and soccer and they all did a fantastic job - we really appreciate your support MHS!
Last Friday, seven students from Lavington East Public School represented the Albury Zone at the Riverina Athletics Carnival held in Albury. They represented our School and our Zone very well and had a fantastic day achieving some personal bests!
These students were our Junior Girls Relay Team - Ebony Waslander, Jade Plunkett, Amy Aulak and Tahnee Bryceson, as well as individual competitors Manase Masudi, Nikiah Ritchie and Taylor Harmer. Congratulations to all students - you were excellent ambassadors for us!

Place your order at your own convenience prior to 9am and up to a week in advance.
It's really simple, no new logons or passwords to remember - get started now!
eCanteen is an online order processing system for schools. It can be used on any device without the need for installation. It is mobile compatible as a free simple app installed from the website without any need of an app store
The eCanteen online ordering system is designed with parents in mind. Many of its features are designed to make the process of ordering from the canteen convenient and simpler for parents of students. These features include:
Easy, secure payment. All payments are processed by PayPal. PayPal is a trusted payment processing site which gives you security in knowing your details are securely stored, so you don’t have to enter them every time. PayPal allows you to use either a credit card or bank account and keeps a record of all payments made.
Click on the green eCanteen link above
Click on New User
Select either Google, Facebook or Microsoft account to use as a login.
You will then need to sign into your chosen account
Complete the fields to register your account with eCanteen
You will then be asked to create a profile for your student to place an order (this is done by clicking new profile). An account can contain multiple profiles (eg one profile for each student).
Select Lavington East Public School Canteen and complete the student details - for Lavington East PS we suggest that classroom (eg 1B) is entered into Room Number.
Once this is completed you are now right to place an order by clicking new order.
Did you know our canteen is run by our School P & C?
Did you know the canteen is registered for 'Work for the Dole'?
Do you have 2 hours to spare per week, month, term?
The canteen needs volunteers and is under 'New Management'. If you could lend a hand, the canteen runs Tuesday to Friday 9am to 2pm. However, we are particularly busy between 10am and 12pm.
Children love to see their family members behind the counter. The best part is that no skills are needed! Mums, Dads, Grandparents, Aunts and Uncles are all welcome! It's also a good opportunity to share ideas for menu items.
If you have previously volunteered, we would love to see you again! Please see the office for a form to update your details.
