TERM 3 Week 2, 2019

Message from, Principal - Mrs M Kelly

Dear Parents & Carers,

I would like to welcome our new families to our school community. Our new enrolments have taken our total student population to 302.

I would also like to welcome Mrs Renae Brookes to the dedicated and quality BPS team.  Mrs Brookes is relieving for Mrs Llewellyn for Term 3 as the relieving Assistant Principal, Learning and Support.

We have had a great start to the Term with the Colour Fun Run taking place, thank you Nadia Lovelight, and the launch of PBL (Positive Behaviour for Learning).

Week 1 has certainly set the tone for the rest of the Term, and to support your planning around school events that will occur over the term, a calendar was posted on our Skoolbag app and a paper copy distributed last Monday. However, please be mindful that unplanned changes and updates may occur so please add them to your calendar as they evolve.

Whilst on the subject of communication, you may have noticed that our school street sign was taken down at the end of Term 2 for safety reasons, the sign will be replaced as soon as possible. To help you stay abreast of events that are continually happening in the school, follow the school on Skoolbag, Instagram and the School Website.

Welcome to Term 3.

Mrs Muriel Kelly

K-6 Assembly – Mondays at 2.20 pm

Please join our school as students showcase their learnings and are acknowledged for the achievements at our K-6 Assembly every Monday in the school hall commencing at 2.20 pm.

Please note the earlier start time of 2.20 pm.

Mrs Renae Brookes

I would like to say a big thank-you to all the staff, students and families that have welcomed me during Week 1, Bogangar PS is a wonderful school to be working in and I feel very lucky to be part of the school community.

I have been working in the NSW Education system for the past 4 ½ years. My family and I moved down to NSW from Queensland at the end of 2014 and I began working at Centaur PS in Banora Point as Assistant Principal Special Education.

I have spent the last 2 years working in the Learning and Wellbeing Team at Murwillumbah and Lismore District Offices.

My background in Queensland includes working as a teacher in mainstream classes from K-6, learning and support teacher and special education teacher.

My passion is working with students with learning and support and disabilities and I have been fortunate enough to focus on these areas of teaching since working in NSW.

I look forward to meeting you all so please come and say hi if you see me around the school.

Healthy Kids

Hello and welcome back to all families.

I am really looking forward to working with all Bogangar Public School students once again.

This term our focus for learning will be based around the factors that make up a healthy, balanced lifestyle. Students will be looking at how our personal health choices can influence their overall health.  Nutrition and becoming more active will make up part of the programe.

Feel free to take a look at the Healthy Kids website for ideas to support your family in creating a healthy balanced lifestyle.

Education Week - Every Student, every voice!

Education Week 2019

Dear Parents

Education Week (Monday 5 August - Friday 9 August) is a statewide event that celebrates public education in NSW.

The achievements of public education and local schools are highlighted during the week, with an emphasis on our students, our educators and the communities that support them.

Every student, every voice is the 2019 Education Week theme. It is an important message that underpins our ambition within the NSW Department of Education and at Bogangar Public School to every student being known, valued and cared for, and gives us the opportunity to reflect on the valuable role student voice has in creating engaged citizens who will thrive beyond the school gates.

Please join us on Tuesday 6 August to celebrate Education Week 2019.

You are invited to share a picnic lunch with your children from 12:50, with open classrooms from 1:30 - 2pm.

Our whole school will then present a concert and assembly at the hall from 2:15 - 3pm to showcase some of the fantastic achievements and efforts of students for you to enjoy.

PBL Launch

PBL Launch

Friday 26 July will go down in history as one of the most exciting days at Bogangar Public School ever – as PBL was officially launched!

PBL (Positive Behaviour for Learning) is a student wellbeing program that helps support student success through positive language, feedback and shared school wide expectations.

The launch assembly was a celebration and lots of fun – with a few surprises too! Students laughed along as the teachers were exposed for their silly behaviour – luckily a visit from our new PBL mascot Kookie saved the day and helped our teachers to become safe, respectful learners again. Kookie even managed to pull off a few awesome dance moves too (check them out on our school’s Instagram page - @BPSCHOOL). The assembly was so exciting, we even had Gold Coast Titan’s star Michael Gordon send on his well wishes and let us know how being safe, respectful and a learner has help him on the football field.

The celebrations continued into recess, with students engaging in some fun activities including face and nail painting, hair colouring and even a disco. Students could also pick up a piece of PBL cake to help mark the occasion.

Now that PBL is launched the real work begins – as students and teachers work together to make BPS the best school it can possibly be.

NAIDOC Week

NAIDOC Week

NAIDOC 2019 – Voice, Treaty, Truth!

Last week of Term 2 we saw our school community come together to celebrate the NAIDOC 2019 theme – Voice, Treaty, Truth!

We celebrated NAIDOC together through dance, song, story, weaving and games. This year’s theme Voice. Treaty. Truth. Let's work together acknowledged our true history, celebrated our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders languages and voice, encouraged us to work towards reconciliation and the role treaties play in moving forward.

Our students enjoyed an assembly opened by our adored Uncle Frank Krasna, treated to dance performances, lessons and Indigenous games lead by Kingscliff High School mentors and the Korekek dancers, weaving and ochre face painting and gathered a wealth of knowledge about local totems, flora, fauna and language with sessions with Uncle Frank.

Sincere thank you and gratitude to Uncle Frank Krasna, Mrs Rosina Beam and all of the Kingscliff High School mentors who made our day so very special. A massive day of learning, language, connecting and cultural sharing.

Aboriginal Education Committee, Miss King, Mrs Smart & Mrs Kelly

First Nations Bedtime Stories

Between our Sorry Day, Reconciliation and NAIDOC Week events each class participated in the First Nations Bedtime Story challenge and explored stories in traditional language about Aboriginal lores, storylines and reflections, keeping our Aboriginal voice alive within our literacy sessions.

The experience was enriched by the Elders wealth of knowledge and genuine warmth in sharing their stories.

Our NAIDOC mufti day successfully raised $150 to donate to support this initiative.

Thank you to our Bogangar community and students for supporting the First Nations Bedtime Stories Challenge.

Your generosity will help them to record and share more stories - from different First Nations groups across Australia - preserving the oldest living cultures on earth for future generations.

Miss King, Organiser

BOOK CLUB

Book Club

Issue 5 is a first in Book Club history—they have a very special Dress Up Time themed edition, just in time for Book Week, which we will be celebrating on Tuesday August 20. Not only is this catalogue full of the best in children’s literature, but they have also filled it with fun dress up ideas to help bring students' favourite book characters to life.

In addition to the Dress Up Time free book offer, parents could also qualify for a Reading Adventure gift by simply placing an order on Issue 5. This means that some families may qualify for two free books on Issue 5! All orders are to be made online through the LOOP system at www.scholastic.com.au/loop

Once you have created an account, you can link your child and their class to your profile. Simply select the current issue, place your order and pay online in one easy transaction. Your order will then be delivered directly to your child at school with nothing else for you to do.

All orders for issue 5 must be placed by 7 August .

Thank you to all the families who continue to support this rewarding program.

Kool Kids Visit

Kool Kids Visit

The students in K Waves and K Starfish had some really KOOL visitors last week! Preschool students from ‘Kool Kids’ at The Commons came along to visit and get a taste of ‘big school’.

Our Kindergarten students worked alongside their new preschool buddies to create some art work after reading a book together. It was amazing to see how kind, caring and cooperative our BPS students were – they have grown up so much over the past two terms.

All the boys and girls had a great time together – we look forward to the next visit!

Special thankyou to Poppy and Billie in Year 6 for their coordination, as well as Robyn for her extra sticker sticking!
