School Values: Respect, Responsibility, Creativity, Integrity, Teamwork

Principal's Report

Dear parents,

Xuno – School Management Platform

Thank you to those parents who have already signed up to the Xuno platform.  Xuno is a school management platform to help us streamline the information management at the front office.  It should act as a one stop shop for everything school related and help us get the information you need when you need it.

Currently on Xuno you can advise us of absences, update your personal details and access your child’s semester one reports.  In the future we plan to use the system to arrange excursion permission slips and payments in a paperless way and manage all our news and announcements.  I encourage you to login via your welcome email, use the button on the Macedon PS webpage or click the link below.

Solar Project Completed

The solar panels were turned on this morning and are generating power and are now fully operational.  I am thrilled for our school to be able to reduce our carbon footprint and start reducing the emissions we are responsible for.

Parent Teacher Interviews

Today is the last second day of the parent teacher interviews.  The 10-minute face-to-face interviews will be held during the afternoon and into the evening today and will give you an opportunity to discuss your child’s progress with their classroom teacher. We strongly advise that facemasks are worn. You will have received an email about your booking.  If you have missed your interview time or not scheduled one, we encourage you to connect with your child’s teacher in the coming weeks.

Please find the Parent Teacher Interview dates and times below:

Wednesday 10th August

Year Foundation-2 - 2:00pm – 5:30pm

 Years 3-6 - 3:50pm – 7:00pm

Traffic Safety around the school

Unfortunately, there have been some reports of unsafe driving and parking around the school lately.  This happens from time to time, and it is worth revisiting some of the road rules around the school that will help us to stay safe and keep our children safe.  We have been in touch the local police for support with this situation as we believe it poses a risk to safety.  Please adhere to all the parking signs around the school.  Please don’t park in no standing zones such as on our driveway in Margaret Street.  Pulling into this driveway on Margaret Street in the morning and afternoon around drop off and pick up time also creates an unsafe situation for our students.  Please encourage your children to use the crossings rather than crossing the road near the crossings.  Students are regularly seen crossing the roads outside of the crossing area on Smith Street as they exit cars and on the corner of Margaret Street and Carrington Street.  Thank you, these small changes in behaviour on mass improve the safety of our school and surrounds for all.

2022 Book Week – Dreaming with Eyes Open 20th – 26th August

We are celebrating book week this year between the 20th and 26th of August.  We will have a range of activities and events across the week to celebrate our love of reading and books in this week culminating our annual book week dress up parade on Friday the 26th of August.  The parade will be between 9:30am and 10:30am.  This will give you a bit of time to help your children develop a costume of their favourite book character.  We encourage everyone to re-use and recycle household items for their costume.

Kind regards and Sampai jumpa (until next time),

Matt Forrest

Dressing for Macedon Winter

Winter is in full swing and the mornings are frosty, we remind parents to dress their children with plenty of layers. The classrooms are all warm, however at recess and lunchtime the children need to be dressed appropriately.  Our lost property has numerous jackets, jumpers and coats. I Please come in and take a look.

If your child is coming home muddy, please pack a spare set of clothes in their bag. We have limited spare clothes in sick bay and would appreciate if you could supply your own.

New COVID Settings

Face Masks

All Victorians are now encouraged to wear a mask when with other people indoors and when you cannot physically distance, including outdoors.

Wearing a face mask can help protect you, your child/ren and those around you. Face masks stop droplets spreading when people talk, cough, sneeze and laugh, which lowers the chance of spreading or catching the virus. This information is especially important for those who are medically at risk.

The Victorian government’s advice recommends people over 8 years of age wear a face mask in indoor settings, except for close contacts, who must wear a mask indoors unless an exception applies. If you wish your child to wear a mask at school, and/or they themselves wish to wear a mask, we will ensure they are supported to do that. We have a supply of children's and adult masks at school or you can send your child to school with their own mask.

People are now exempt from testing and isolating four weeks after getting COVID, instead of 12 weeks.

Parents and carers who have COVID-19 can transport their non-COVID-19 children via private vehicle to their primary or secondary school when an alternative person is not available to assist. This will include school holiday programs held on school grounds.

This means that parents and carers will be able to leave COVID self-isolation to take their non-COVID-19 child to school or school holiday programs via a private vehicle.

The parent or carer must travel directly to and from the school only. They must remain in the vehicle at all times, unless it is reasonably necessary to leave the vehicle to walk the child to and from the entrance of the school safely. They must wear a face mask at all times.

Family members are asked to continue reporting positive COVID-19 cases to both the Department of Health and our own testing portal.

You must also let the school know if your child is a close contact. Students who are close contacts and want to attend should still take 5 RATs over 7 days and wear a face mask whilst indoors if they are aged 8 years or over.

Students should continue to stay home if they are unwell, even if they test negative on a RAT.

Rapid Antigen Tests

Rapid Antigen Tests (RATs) will continue to be available in our school in Terms 3 and 4.

RATs continue to be required by students who are household contacts to attend school (5 negative tests over a 7 day period) or who have symptoms.

The ongoing supply of RATs to families in our school will ensure that parents and carers will have them should they need them if their child is a household contact or has symptoms.

Families must continue to notify the Department of Health and the school if their child returns a positive RAT result. Additionally, you should inform us if any of your children are household contacts.

Thank you also to all families who have got their child vaccinated.

The Australian Technical Advisory Group on Immunisation (ATAGI) has updated its recommendations around fourth doses of COVID-19 vaccination. From Monday 11 July 2022, people over 30 years will be eligible for a fourth dose. ATAGI recommends that people aged 50 to 64 years should have their fourth dose, while those aged 30 to 49 years may choose to have a fourth dose. For further information see the ATAGI website.

Getting vaccinated is easy and bookings can be done via the coronavirus website. If you have any questions about the vaccines, I encourage you to speak to your GP or a health practitioner.

For more information about face mask requirements, visit the Coronavirus website.

STEM update

This week Grade 5/6 students have been hard at work interpreting (with a small amount of guess work at times) Foundation student's game designs and coding them into working games. They need to stick to the brief set down by each Foundation student as well as keep the same art style and drawings they have used - which is harder than it looks.

Below are some examples underway.

Oh, and speaking of Foundation students, today we were talking about how computers encode and decode data, and what better way to learn about that than to write our own secret messages.

We started by learning about and using Morse Code and then students started making up their own encoders and decoders to write secret messages to their friends.

Apologies in advance if you now get a bunch of secret letters from your young people asking to stay up late or for extra lollies!

See if you can figure out the names of the students in the picture below using the Morse Code they have learnt.

Art Update

In Visual Art we have been really loving learning about Intaglio printing. We used specialised foam sheets to etch a design into the surface and then rolled on acrylic paint and used cartridge paper to create prints.

Our Steam Punk focus is really inspiring some terrific art work too.

Outside School Hours Care

Please notify the office or email oshp@macedonps.vic.edu.au if your child is sick and will not be attending before or after school care.

We now have spaces available for casual days, however you need to fill out an enrolment form PRIOR to your child starting at the service. f you have a permanent booking and do not need the service for After School please advise the program as soon as you know, preferably before 11.00am on the day so we are able to give that space to another child.  For Before School, please call before 6.30pm the day before or email the service on oshp@macedonps.vic.edu.au

Late cancellation fees apply if your child’s place is cancelled after 11.00am.  Further, if you do not cancel your child and they do not attend, fees may still apply.

School Council Report

At our recent school council meeting (Wednesday 27 July), we discussed potential options for lunch orders. A number of council members, with the support of Emma Tuck, are looking into this issue further and will update parents with more information soon.

Work continues on our school grounds with the Library Learning Hub near completion and solar panels being installed. Proposals put forward by our Grade 6 students in Terms 1 and 2 are progressing; the new flag poles for the LGBTIQ+, Torres Strait lslander, Aboriginal and Australian flags are to be installed soon.

We thank Sam Evans, who has recently resigned from school council, for her contributions to the school. We also thank Karren Baker who stepped up to the role of Acting Principal while Matt was on leave.

Wishing everyone a productive Term 3.
