Rozelle Public School Newsletter

TERM THREE WEEK TWO

FROM THE PRINCIPAL

Rozelle is a place where Aboriginal children learned, played and celebrated their culture for thousands of years on this beautiful, natural land. As we learn, play and celebrate together on this land, we honour the Wangal people of the Eora nation and pay our respects to elders both past, present and emerging.

WELCOME BACK!

It was wonderful to welcome everyone back from their winter break last week. Students have returned with enthusiasm and enjoyed reconnecting with teachers, friends and learning. Despite the current COVID environment, the school is doing its very best to maintain programs to ensure continuity of learning for our students. We are looking forward to another great term.

COVID SAFE MEASURES - 4 WEEK BLITZ

Earlier this week, information was sent home outlining the Department of Education’s updated Covid Smart measures. These new measures are now in place and include:

  • Masks are strongly recommended for staff and students. Any student who wears a mask will be supported by staff.

  • All visitors who enter the building are strongly encouraged to wear a mask.

  • Our plans for Education Week have been altered - see below for details.

  • All non essential excursions have been postponed.

  • Enhanced cleaning will continue during school hours.

  • Additional RAT’s will continue to be distributed.

  • Regular RAT surveillance testing is advised - especially if symptomatic.

If you ever are in doubt or have a question, please don't hesitate to contact the office. We are here to help and answer any questions you may have.

WINTER ILLNESS

COVID, flu and winter illnesses continue to impact staff, student and community health and wellbeing. Since returning from holidays our daily student absenteeism levels have been high and I expect this to continue for the next few weeks. I encourage all families to be cautious and if your child is unwell please keep them at home. If your child becomes unwell at school, a family member will be contacted and requested to come and collect. Your cooperation is appreciated.

CONGRATULATIONS DAVIN, VICENTE, IDA, CASSIUS AND OTIS

Last week Davin Carty competed at the NSW State Cross Country carnival. The conditions on the day were rainy and cold yet Davin’s performance was incredible and he placed 7th overall. This means he was selected as a reserve for the NSW team to compete at the national championships. What a huge achievement - we are so proud of Davin.

Vicente Golzi Braga has also received good news this week. Many of us will remember Vicente’s amazing performance of ‘Piano Man’ at a recent assembly. An audition tape was sent to the Performing Arts Unit who showcase talented performers across NSW public schools. Vicente was successful and as part of the Festival of Instrumental Music, will perform on the stage of the newly refurbished concert hall at the Sydney Opera House. Congratulations Vicente.

During the holidays, three students, Ida Lawrence, Cassius and Otis Williams travelled to the snowfields of Perisher to compete in the Interschool Snowsports Championships. All three achieved their personal best with Ida qualifying for the State Ski Championship in the Alpine division. Congratulations Ida, Cassius and Otis.

STAFFING UPDATE

Starting this week, Mrs Svinos is on five weeks extended leave. During this time, Ms Julie Day will be Relieving Deputy Principal. Ms Desiree Ronsen will take on the leadership role of Stage One (Years One & Two).

STUDENTS ON A MISSION!

Paris Tanner Black and Oscar Lodge are two students on a mission. This afternoon at 4pm on the Tiger Turf, as part of the World’s Greatest Shave they will be shaving their heads, raising money for the Leukaemia Foundation. Both students have set up an online fundraising page and I look forward to sharing with you their before and after photos in the next newsletter. Well done Paris and Oscar.

EDUCATION WEEK - CHANGES TO PROGRAM

As communicated earlier this week we have postponed some aspects of our Education Week plans. The school had hoped to open up rehearsals and activities for parents / carers to drop in to see students participating in some of the many programs on offer. However with current COVID-smart settings, it has been recommended by the Department of Education that these events be postponed.

Families are most welcome to come along to either of our Athletics Carnivals, scheduled for next Wednesday 3 August.

  • K-1 Carnival @ school - 12.15pm-1.15pm on the Tiger Turf

  • 2-6 Carnival @ King George's Oval 9.30am-2.15pm

ESAFETY COMMISSIONER

Parents and teachers are often searching for information or steps to take when supporting children in the online space. A great resource is the eSafety Commissioner https://www.esafety.gov.au/ There is a wealth of information and advice for parents and carers to help children have safe experiences online. Included are some of the big issues:

  • Cyberbullying
  • Online pornography
  • Time online
  • Online gaming
  • Unwanted contact

There is also information for parents and carers of children under 5 as it's never too early to talk about online safety. I encourage you to spend a few minutes navigating through the site as you may find some helpful advice to support your family now and in the future.

REMINDERS

REMINDER ABOUT MORNING DROP OFF

Families are reminded that students should not be arriving at school before 8.30am unless they are attending OSH Club or a before school activity such as band rehearsal. There may be occasions where you need to drop your child off 10 minutes earlier. In these instances, students must go to the Peace Garden, where they sit and wait for teacher supervision to begin. Over the past few weeks, some students have been turning up to school as early as 7.45am. This is too early as supervision does not begin until 8.30am.

LOST PROPERTY

When parents are up at the school they may have seen the lost property trolley which is wheeled regularly into the Darling Street playground. Should your child misplace a hat, jumper, water bottle or lunchbox…you may find it in the trolley.

KINDERGARTEN 2023 ONLINE ENROLMENTS

Rozelle Public School is currently taking enrolments for Kindergarten for 2023 from families living within our school catchment area. Detailed information about the enrolment procedure and a map of the school catchment area can be found on the school website at www.rozelle-p.schools.nsw.gov.au or by phoning the school office on (02) 9810 2347.

MUSIC PROGRAM

PERCUSSION and STATE MUSIC CAMP
Leo Germain (6 Petra pictured) represented R.P.S. at the NSW State Music Camp last week, playing drums and plenty of percussion including congas. He performed in the incredible Jazz Stage Band, learnt to sing in Latin, made many new friends and didn't get much sleep!

PIANO SOLOIST

An exciting opportunity is ahead for Vicente Golzi Braga (5 Amalfi) after being selected to perform in the Concert Hall of the Sydney Opera House for the Arts Unit Festival of Instrumental Music 'Mimosa' Concert in a few weeks. Vi will sing and play solo piano and harmonica with the Billy Joel number Piano Man as a featured soloist in the concert of instrumental ensembles.

IRON COVE PERFORMING ARTS FESTIVAL

On Thursday 11 August, five R.P.S. music ensembles will perform at the Seymour Centre. This new performance event involves primary and high schools from the Inner West local area dancing, singing, acting and playing showcasing a variety of fantastic items. Students involved will depart from school by bus at 11.30am for an afternoon 'dress' rehearsal.

P&C ENVIRONMENT & SUSTAINABILITY TEAM

VICTORIA ROAD SAFETY GROUP

In June the Victoria Road Safety Group (VRSG) started gathering data on the intersection of Victoria Rd & Darling St.

  • On a typical school day there are 600 instances of a school-age student (RPS and Sydney Secondary College Balmain) crossing either Victoria Road or Darling Street at the intersection.
  • Over 200 students also cross Victoria Road at Wellington Street.
  • Jamie Parker MP has raised with the Minister for Transport the previous request for a Red-Light Speed Camera at the intersection.
  • The principal and P&C for SSC Balmain have also been contacted to support the initiative.
  • We have started to draft the submission which will ultimately be presented to Transport for NSW.

The VRSG now numbers 21 households and growing. If you are interested in learning more, please email johnfreeman53@hotmail.com. We are particularly in need of stories of near misses at the intersection.

BAY RUN TEAM 2022

Join our School's BayRun 2022 team and take part in the 2km Primary OSHCare School Children’s Challenge on the morning of Sunday 21 August. It’s a wonderful opportunity for all our children to share in a fun local event with family and friends.

All participants in the race receive a medal and there are great prizes on offer, including prizes for the biggest school team and the fastest school. Parents can register as an accompanying adult in the 2km race.

Registrations are NOW OPEN at www.bayrun.com.au – be sure to click on our school name when you register.
