Rozelle Public School Newsletter

TERM FOUR WEEK TWO

FROM THE PRINCIPAL

Rozelle is a place where Aboriginal children learned, played and celebrated their culture for thousands of years on this beautiful, natural land. As we learn, play and celebrate together on this land, we honour the Wangal people of the Eora nation and pay our respects to elders both past, present and emerging.

The term has got off to a flying start and it was great to see everyone return from holidays - especially Ms Carol Sheppad. Over the past fortnight,  students have engaged with learning programs including reading and numeracy check in assessments for Years 3, 4, & 5. These online assessments provide teachers with valuable feedback on student achievement which they can respond to this term.

When everyone returned this term the main building was surrounded in scaffolding as part of the roofing replacement project. Staff and students have been very quick to adapt to the changes and it was pleasing to see the impact on playground space was minimal. Let's hope that the weather improves and the roofers can get started.

There is certainly a lot to look forward to this term and the weeks will fly by! Yesterday our Stage Three choir attended the first rehearsal for this year’s School Spectacular. This is one of many events that will ensure a busy but enjoyable end to the year. Highlights include:

  • P&C Halloween Disco - Friday 28 October
  • Grandparents Assembly - Friday 4 November
  • Remembrance Day Assembly - Friday 11 November
  • School Spectacular - Friday 24 & Saturday 26 November

COVID - CHANGES TO ISOLATION REQUIREMENTS
On 30 September, the National Cabinet announced that from Friday 14 October 2022, people who test positive to COVID-19 no longer need to isolate. Although this is a significant change, the key message that 'staff and students should continue to stay at home when sick’, remains the same. To maintain community health and minimise transition it's important we take a common sense approach. This includes:

  • If your child has been exposed to COVID-19 it is recommended that you monitor for symptoms and test if you have any concerns.

  • Students should not attend school while they are unwell and only return when symptom free.

  • If your child tests positive the school must be informed.

  • Should you wish your child to wear a mask, they will be supported by staff.

  • The school can provide families with additional RAT ktis. These are available on request.

I would like to thank you again for your ongoing support to keep our students, staff and community safe and healthy.

END OF YEAR - CHANGE OF DATE

At the start of this term the Department of Education revised the date for the final day of the school year. The final day for students is Friday 16 December and will include the Leavers’ Assembly and Archway.  Staff will return on Monday 19 and Tuesday 20 December for two days of professional learning and preparations for the following year.

KINDERGARTEN 2023 UPDATE

The school is looking forward to welcoming a new cohort of Kindergarten students in 2023. Last week Sepfora and Team Kindy ran an information evening for new families which was very well attended. Thank you to those parents who came along.

As part of the school’s transition pack, a picture book was created, published and shared with families. It is hoped that this book will be read many times before the new school year begins. This video was sent in by one of our families. Enjoy watching James and his younger sister Emmie, read about a day at Rozelle Public School.

Later on this term, our new families will visit the school to meet staff and organised uniforms. Exciting time ahead!

Selective High Schools cater for high potential and intellectually gifted students and applications for Year Seven 2024 are now open. If you are the parent of a Year Five child and wish to apply for a selective high school - now is the time to register.

Included in this newsletter is a comprehensive information package for parents including a step by step application guide. Importantly, applications close on Wednesday 16 November and parents must use the online application form which is available via https://shsoc.education.nsw.gov.au/

BASKETBALL COURT UPGRADE

The long awaited basketball court upgrade is finally happening. This week I met with the Department of Education Assets Team who will manage the project. The tender has been awarded and the work will be carried out during the summer holiday period. All going to plan, students will return in 2023 to an upgraded court with new hoops. The project was delayed due to COVID related staffing issues and the extreme weather events that caused damage across the state’s schools. I am very pleased that there is now a planned schedule of works which includes a completion date.

RETURNING TO RPS IN 2023

Is your child(ren) returning to Rozelle PS in 2023?  To help with essential planning we request all families complete this short survey. All responses will be kept confidential with only school executives accessing responses.

You will need to complete the survey for each of your children. For example if you have three children it will need to be completed three times. For our current preschool and Year Six families there is no need to respond.

This survey was due back on Friday 14 October. If you have not yet completed it, please do so ASAP. Our office may follow up with a phone call.

REMINDERS

TELL THEM FROM ME PARENT SURVEY - OPEN UNTIL FRIDAY 4 NOVEMBER

This Term, our school will be participating in the Partners in Learning parent survey, another part of the Tell Them From Me suite of surveys (student, teacher and parent surveys) on student engagement. The survey asks parents and carers questions about different factors that are known to impact on student wellbeing and engagement.

Running this survey will help our school understand parents’ and carers’ perspectives on their child’s experience at school. These include: communication between parents/carers and staff, activities and practices at home and parent/carer views on the school's support of learning and behaviour. This valuable feedback will help our school make practical improvements.

The survey is conducted entirely online on smartphones, ipads, tablets, laptops or computers. The survey will typically take 15 minutes or less to complete and is completely confidential. The parent survey will be open until 4 November. Although participating in the survey is entirely voluntary, your responses are very much appreciated.

More information about the survey is available at: https://education.nsw.gov.au/student-wellbeing/tell-them-from-me

NUT AWARE

A number of students at Rozelle have been diagnosed with a life-threatening allergy to nuts. While it is not advised for the school to declare itself “nut-free” we are definitely a “nut-aware” school. This means that we ask parents/carers to carefully consider the food they provide for their child and avoid foods that contain nuts. Before sending in food for special occasions for your child’s class, please check with the teacher. The school appreciates everyone’s effort in keeping all our students safe and supporting their families to manage this difficult situation.

REMINDER ABOUT MORNING DROP OFF

Families are reminded that students should not be arriving at school before 8.30am unless they are attending OSH Club or a before school activity such as band rehearsal. There may be occasions where you need to drop your child off 10 minutes earlier. In these instances, students must go to the Peace Garden, where they sit and wait for teacher supervision to begin. Over the past few weeks, some students have been turning up to school as early as 7.45am. This is too early as supervision does not begin until 8.30am.

LOST PROPERTY

When parents are up at the school they may have seen the lost property trolley which is wheeled regularly into the Darling Street playground. Should your child misplace a hat, jumper, water bottle or lunchbox…you may find it in the trolley.

VICTORIA ROAD SAFETY GROUP

The Victoria Rd Safety Group continues to monitor the safety of students who cross at the intersection of Victoria Rd & Darling St to get to school. Please sign the petition here:

https://www.gopetition.com/petitions/state-government-improve-pedestrian-safety-at-darling-st-victoria-road-now.html.

The four improvements we’re petitioning for and proposing in the submission are:

1. Expand the area of the scheduled Rozelle Public School Speed Safety Zone to incorporate the two intersections of Victoria Road / Darling Street and Victoria Road / Wellington Street.

2. Change the light filtering pattern to remove competition between pedestrians and drivers turning left onto Victoria Road.

3. Relocate the Red Light Speed Safety Camera from the intersection of Victoria Road and Evans Street to the intersection of Victoria Road and Darling Street.

4. Introduce barriers or bollards as appropriate on corner kerbs of the intersection of Victoria Road and Darling Street.

The submission to Transport for NSW is now fully drafted and is in the hands of the working group for feedback and finalising. If you are interested in learning more, please email johnfreeman53@hotmail.com.
