PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE

Well the term is certainly flying by with our students already having participated in school photos and a whole school picnic. We are currently participating in swimming lessons and for a group of students, Friday morning surfing lessons. There is lots more to come before the end of the year, so make sure you check the Upcoming Events section at the top of this newsletter.

2020 Enrolments

It is that time of year when we start looking at our staffing and classroom structures for next year. If you are aware that you are leaving or if you know of any families who have moved into the area and are intending to enrol their children here next year, could you please let our front office staff know. This will greatly assist with our planning.

Every now and then I get queries about why we have ‘split’ classes. Some schools choose to have them for pedagogical reasons, finding benefit in ‘looping’ students with the same teacher for two years or as means to help extend or support groups of students with the curriculum or social development. For us at Scarborough PS, we generally have split classes out of necessity.

It is rare for smaller schools to have numbers in each year level that neatly fit into straight classes. We have some year cohorts with around 15 students, some with 25, some with 35 or 40 plus. Recommended class sizes vary from 27 for Pre-primary, 24 for Years 1-3 to 32 for Years 4-6. We are tasked with fitting our students into these structures as well as into the physical number of classrooms that we have available to us. For this reason, it is highly likely that there will once again be ‘split’ classes throughout the school in 2020.

Whilst we generally don’t have a choice but to split our year levels, this is not something that is detrimental to a child’s education. Evidence based research has shown that the structure of classes have little effect on student achievement. The factors that have the biggest effect are based around teachers with effective classroom practice and this is what we focus on at Scarborough PS.

If you have any queries around this, please don’t hesitate to contact me.

School Photos

Information regarding how to view and purchase school photos are coming home next Tuesday. Each child has a unique log in code to be able to access their pictures. Please check your children’s bags for this information.

Surfing Lessons

Surfing lessons started this morning at Trigg Beach for some of our students. They were not deterred by the wild and windy weather and from all accounts had a great time!

P&C School Fun Run

Dear Parent/Guardian,

As a way to give back to our community we will be holding the School Fun-Run on 22nd November 2019. The funds raised will be donated to SPS P&C. Our P&C is an inclusive, voluntary organisation that works in close partnership with our school's staff, parents, citizens and students to achieve the best possible outcomes for our children and community.

About the Program

The School Fun-Run promotes healthy and active lifestyles while helping us raise funds! It’s all about participation, with students treated to a great day as a reward for their fundraising efforts.  Family support is key to our fundraising success and we encourage everyone to get involved.

How Does My Child Fundraise?

Firstly, go to schoolfundraising.com.au and create a student profile page. Everything to do with your fundraising revolves around this page. Once you have completed this, read through your Sponsorship Form, which has instructions on how to raise money and order prizes.

Students who raise just $10 will receive a reward for their effort. The more they raise, the better their reward – don’t forget to check these out in the sponsorship form! We have educated students on the dangers of door knocking without adult supervision, and we encourage you to reiterate this at home. The best people to ask for sponsorship are people you know (e.g. friends, family, work colleagues and neighbours).

Online Fundraising

The easiest way to help your child raise money is through online fundraising, where students raise an average of $150. On top of raising more money, it’s also safer and easier than doorknocking and you don’t have to worry about handling money! To start fundraising online, go to your student profile page at schoolfundraising.com.au and share your online fundraising link.

Getting Involved

Not only can you support the school and students with your sponsorship – but you can join in on the fun! We would love to welcome parents and family members to attend the School Fun-Run. If you would also like to volunteer to help on the day, please contact me on the details below.  I can’t wait to see you at our event!

Ordering Prizes – ALL PRIZES MUST BE ORDERED ONLINE

Prizes MUST be ordered between the 15th November and 21st November 2019. Simply visit schoolfundraising.com.au to create / log into your Profile Page between these dates.  Then click on the ‘CLAIM YOUR PRIZE’ button and follow the prompts. If you have any questions, please contact Maria (P&C fundraising representative) at scarboroughprimarypc@gmail.com!

More communication to follow in the next few weeks. Thank you, good luck and happy fundraising!
