A recent study aimed at determining significant predictors and contributors to well-being has been conducted on rabbits. One element of the study involved feeding them terrible diets to establish the effect of food on well-being. The problem arose, however, when they noticed that the rabbits being fed the worst diet were actually doing the best (I hoped finally we were going to debunk the power of lettuce!). They reported:
“They looked around and realized what was different about that one group is that there was a researcher that wasn't just giving the rabbits kibbles. She was actually picking them up. She was petting them. She was talking to them. She was giving them love and kindness," says Harding in a Knowledge@Wharton interview. That's why her new book on the under-appreciated role of kindness in wellness is titled The Rabbit Effect.”
The study profoundly concluded that the solution to humanity’s wellbeing did not, in-fact, lie in diet, exercise or genetic disposition, whilst they were acknowledged as contributors, they concluded that the foundational building block for our well-being stems from kindness.
Brilliant isn’t it? What a revelation for our society! If only we knew this earlier! Excuse my sarcasm, but from a young child, and I believe for many young children before me, I was brought up on what the Bible says:
Matthew 5:44-45
But I say to you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, so that you may be sons of your Father who is in heaven; for He causes His sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous.
Eph 4:31-5.1
Let all bitterness and wrath and anger and clamour and slander be put away from you, along with all malice. Be kind to one another, tender-hearted, forgiving each other, just as God in Christ also has forgiven you. Therefore be imitators of God, as beloved children; and walk in love, just as Christ also loved you and gave Himself up for us, an offering and a sacrifice to God as a fragrant aroma.
Psalms 145:17
The Lord is righteous in all His ways
And kind in all His deeds.
Galatians 5:22
But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness…
The challenge though lies not just in knowing the truth but then acting on it. Every one of us knows that the time when we are required to show kindness if often the time when we least feel like it, or the other person least deserves it. For the Christian, I believe the solution lies in not drawing on our own strength in these moments, but recognising that we need help and drawing on the very spirit of God, from which kindness is a fruit, to display the kindness that leads to well-being.
It is my hope that in the rush of all that needs to be done to prepare for the looming Christmas break, and then the ‘2020 beyond’ that we can continue to be a community that is unique, one that looks after the well-being of those around us by simply being kind in any opportunity.
Good Tidings!

CASINO FIRE ASSISTANCE:
I wanted to make mention of an opportunity to help out with the recent fires in Casino. I know we have asked a lot this year, and we thank you for your support, so, please, feel no compulsion, but for those who are looking for a way to give to our community in need after the recent Bushfire disasters in Casino’s surrounds. A post costs $20, a stabiliser, $60 and the wire for the fence $100. The idea we have come up with in consultation with Blaze Aid is, if you would like to donate the money to purchase one of these items, we will then purchase on your behalf and give the resources to Blaze Aid and their volunteers will help install the fences. This area is critical for farmers to get back on their feet.
Thank you.
