From the Principal, Ms Hanson

Coming together is a beginning,

Staying together is progress,

And working together is success.

Henry Ford

This quote has resonated with me this week on many levels. This week is National Reconciliation Week and the 2020 theme ‘In This Together’ reflects the current experience of the Covid-19 pandemic for many of us!

It has been a joy to welcome our students back through the school gates this week and has only confirmed to all of us exactly how much we have missed them. We know the transition back hasn’t been easy for some and we are always here to support in whatever way we can! To watch our students reconnect with each other and our school staff has been wonderful. While some aspects of school are a little different and will be for a while to come, things are certainly feeling “back to normal” in many respects. The playground is once again buzzing and the classrooms are full of bright, happy, engaged learners. I couldn’t be more proud of how our students have embraced change. The conversations with our students over the last few days revealed mixed responses to the “learning from home” experience. However, all agreed any challenge was overcome with support from their fabulous “teachers” (their at home teacher or at school teacher) and some bravery, engagement, risk taking, collaboration, optimism and perseverance! This is another example of where we can find those rainbows in a storm!

Here are a few more! Over the last two months, our teachers have completely taken learning to a remote level. While many of our teachers have used technology to engage and enhance student learning before, for some this wasn’t always a seamless task! Collectively our teachers supported one another to “give their absolute best” to our students during this time! Believe me, there were challenges! Over the last two weeks they were effectively delivering three modes of learning to support our students; learning from home, face to face learning at school for students on their allocated day and supporting students of our essential workers at school each day! We have hard working teachers who took all of this in their stride, always with a smile! Our fabulous SAS (administrative and support) staff have been an incredible support to our staff, students and community during this time as well! Nothing has been a bother and no challenge has been insurmountable!

Our parents and carers have been super stars too! We know first hand the challenges that you have faced during this time and we are so grateful to each and every one of you for the support you have provided your children and our staff. Thank you for supporting us with the changes we have needed to make at school (e.g. drop off, pick up). We know it’s not always easy and there have been a few adjustments, but we are so grateful for your support as always!

What's been happening this week?

Another rainbow during the storm! Chloe H spreading joy through music!

Over the last eight weeks, our lovely Chloe H in Year 6 has performed a 30 minute trombone performance two to three mornings per week for 110 very lucky residents of an aged care centre on the Far North Coast . Chloe shared a live performance through face time that was broadcast onto televisions in each lounge area. All the residents and staff thoroughly enjoyed Chloe's regular performances where she interacted with the audience and played numerous songs on her Trombone. Chloe- we heard that everyone’s favourite was the Queen melody! Thank you Chloe for spreading joy during these tricky times. What a wonderful ambassador for BHPS! You are a star!

Thank you for continuing to support us in facilitating student, staff and community safety?

*In order for us to implement appropriate social distancing measures proportionate to health advice at this time, we ask that parents/ carers please continue to consider their drop off and pick up arrangements and clearly communicate them with your children. Parents/ carers should drop students off at the school gate in the morning and depart promptly where practicable. Staff members will be available near the main gate to assist with the Kiss and Drop, welcome students and guide them to the playground or classroom in the morning. Additionally, we ask that parents/ carers please adhere to social distancing measures in the afternoon at pick up and arrange a collection point to pick up children outside of the school gates. We do understand that this is not as easy to do with our younger students so, if parents/ carers are not using the “Kiss and Collect” service, we ask that they please adhere to social distancing guidelines, remain outside the school grounds as teachers are happy to walk students to you, collect children and leave the school grounds promptly. School gates will open in the afternoons by teachers as they dismiss students closer to 3pm (not the usual 2:30pm).

*If you need to contact us at school, please make contact via phone or email. If it is necessary to visit the office, please continue to respect the 1.5 – 2 metre distancing rules, and follow the taped distance markings.

PLEASE ENSURE YOUR CHILDREN HAVE A FULL WATER BOTTLE PACKED EACH DAY!

We thank you for your continued support and understanding and will continue to keep you informed as further information becomes available. As always, please don’t hesitate to contact us at school should you have any questions or concerns.

From the red letterbox...

Hi Everyone,

My name is Rosie the Ranger.

I came to visit BHPS this week just to see how everyone was doing during an afternoon Kiss and Drop/Collect session.

My boss asked me to come because we had some reports of cars double parking and obstructing buses. So, I thought I’d come and check it all out.

The teachers were telling me that this designated area is only NEW for afternoon Kiss and Drop/Collections. I thought everyone was doing a pretty good job seeing as though everyone is new to it. But, I thought I might be able to help you with some handy tips!

During School Drop Off and Pick Up times, the designated space is No Parking. That means:

·         You must NOT STOP for more than 2 minutes in a No Parking Area

·         You must remain in the vehicle OR if you need to get out, you must remain within 3 metres of the vehicle (but again, total time should be less than 2 minutes)

Here are some other handy tips for a successful Kiss and Drop Zone:

·         Drive as far up the Kiss and Drop Zone as you can, (the teachers will bring your child to the car – rather than you stopping where you child is. This can halt the flow of traffic)

·         If you have your children’s school bags in the boot, pop the boot open so that the teachers know to grab them. If you do not have a boot popper, open the passenger window and let the teacher know the bags are in the boot.

·         Be Patient at the back of the line. The teachers are going as fast as they can at the front of the line to get kids to the correct car within a 2 minute time frame. Please be patient with the flow of the Kiss and Drop/Collect line. Do not overtake to “get ahead”.

I’ll pop back again to see how you’re all progressing!

 Take Care

Rosie the Ranger

Revised approach to Semester One Reporting

There will be a revised approach to semester one reporting, with the aim to provide information about student progress and achievement, but in a more flexible, simplified way and with an extended deadline if we choose. Reporting to parents/carers will focus on the learning that has taken place so far this year. This will encapsulate student’s progress and achievement of the learning provided both at school and at home, as well as guidance going forward.

The grading of students using the five point A-E scale is not required. We are looking to hold parent/ teacher interviews during Week 9 of this term. More information about reporting and parent/ teacher interviews will be detailed in the Beacon next week.

Have you got a child starting school in 2021?

Although tricky at present, we are starting to prepare for Kindergarten 2021. If you have a child who is starting Kindergarten next year we would love to hear from you! Please make contact with our school office so we can add you to our database and ensure you receive all the vital information for transition to school in 2021. At this point in time, we aim to hold our information session during Term 3 (date TBA). In the meantime, please get in touch and let others know as well! We can add your details to our database so that when Kindergarten 2021 transition commences, we are able to let you know!

CYBER SAFETY TIPS-HOW TO MANAGE YOUR DIGITAL FOOTPRINT

With society becoming increasingly involved in social networking information and communication technology it is important that we remember that we use these information communication technologies responsibly.

One of the great things about being online is the ability to share videos and photos with your friends and seeing their response. It is important to remember that everything you post online combines to make your digital footprint. Remember that what is shared by you with your friends can also be viewed by people you don’t know. And once it’s online, it could be there forever.

You can manage your digital footprint by:

  • Keeping your personal details private
  • Not sharing your username or password with anyone.
  • Thinking before you post. Once posted, it can be difficult to remove.
  • Not posting things that you don’t want others to know about or that you wouldn’t say to their face.
  • Being respectful of other people’s content that you post and share. Only post photos of others if you have their permission.
  • Talk to friends and family if something makes you uncomfortable, scared or sad. Or call the Kids Helpline 1800 55 1800 number to talk to an expert.

Remember before you post anything online THINK!

Is it true?

Is it helpful?

Is it inspiring?

Is it necessary?

Is it kind?

Most social networking sites such as Facebook and Instagram have a minimum age limit of 13 and are therefore not appropriate for primary school students.

You can also visit the e-safety website https://www.esafety.gov.au/ to get all the facts and for more information on cyber safety.

Premier's Reading Challenge

The Premier's Reading Challenge (PRC) is underway and goes through until August 28th 2020. The challenge aims to encourage a love of reading for leisure and pleasure in students, and to enable them to experience quality literature. It is not a competition but a challenge for each student to read, to read more and to read more widely. The Premier's Reading Challenge (PRC) is available for all NSW students in Kindergarten to Year 9.

A link to the Premier’s Reading Challenge website can be found in the

Student Portal under the Learning section.  Students are also able to add a link to the PRC in the My Link List section to make the PRC easier to find.

The URL to use is  https://online.det.nsw.edu.au/prc/studentExperience.html#/

Students can access the PRC website using their Department of Education (DoE) username and password.  These are the same details a student would use to access the Student Portal and the computer network at school.  If you are unaware of your username and/or password, please contact your class teacher and ask for your Student Portal username and/or password.

We encourage as many students to partake in the challenge as possible. All students who participate will go into a class draw, with a prize for a student per class at the end of the challenge.

Please come and see me if you would like more information on the PRC or assistance in sourcing books.

This year we are asking all students in K-6 to log their own books to complete the challenge.

Happy reading!

Lunchbox Program

Lunch is on us.

Need help with the kid’s lunches during school holidays or while schooling from home? What about your own lunch? Maybe an elderly relative or neighbour? In response to Covid-19, The Link Community Care will fill your lunchbox for free.

So what’s in your ‘LUNCHBOX’? Director of The Link Community Care Glenn Wysman said it was important to ensure the lunchbox was healthy. “We consulted local nutritionist Kelly Richardson, and as a result we’ve decided to pack the lunchboxes with a sandwich, a drink, a piece of fruit and a snack - or two.”

Mr Wysman said they’ve also put in place provisions to ensure they abide by the strict rules governing social distancing and travel during Covid-19.

“We will be making it as safe as possible for those wanting a ‘LUNCHBOX’ by providing a drive through service, so people won’t have to leave their car.

Our drive through lunch centre is located at the Pittwater Sports Centre, 1525 Pittwater Road, Narrabeen, which is opposite the park where we typically stage ‘Carols by The Lake’ and ‘Eggs by the Lake’.

“Each ‘LUNCHBOX’ will be sufficient for one person, although families will be able to collect extra lunch boxes to ensure no one skips lunch.”

The Link Community Care ‘LUNCHBOX’ Program commences on Wednesday 15th April and will be available Monday to Friday from 11am to 2pm as long as the need continues. A gold coin donation would be gratefully accepted but is not essential.

If you would like to support the Program, Mr Wysman outlined several options. “You can donate at www.link.org.au/community-care/

You can also drop off non-perishable grocery items to the Pittwater Sports Centre which will be packaged into hampers to help those in our community in most need.

“We also need volunteers to help pack and deliver the ‘LUNCHBOXES’.”

The Link Community Care will also be offering a home delivery service for the most vulnerable & the elderly who are unable to leave their home.

“These are unprecedented times”, said Mr Wysman. “But one thing I know about the Northern Beaches, is that we are a very supportive community and together we will get through this season.

“I would also like to acknowledge those who’ve come on board to help us run this program. Special appreciation to Mark & Gai Forrest owners of Pittwater Sports Centre and the organisations within the centre”.
