Letter from the Acting Principal

As Term 1 draws to a close I would like to acknowledge our wonderful staff.  We are so incredibly fortunate to have such a professional, dedicated team who deeply care about your children, each other, and our wider school community.  My favourite part of the day is when I have the opportunity to watch them work with your children.  The expertise that they demonstrate and the deep knowledge and positive relationships that they have nurtured with our students is something I feel very privileged to witness.  They are truly amazing.

Master Plan for the Oval

Last Tuesday at our School Advisory Board meeting Richard Bellemo from RB Landscapes Pty Ltd presented his master plan for the landscaping and play spaces around our oval. The aims of his design are as below:

  • To provide a nature play area for the students around the perimeter of  the current oval.

  • To include areas within the naturescape that reflect the indigenous history of the area.

  • Incorporate plants and trees originally used by the South-Eastern and Eastern indigenous people of Australia for food, medicine, fibre and implements. Increase biodiversity,

  • To include sensory play areas that contain playground equipment/elements that stimulate one of the seven senses - touch, movement, smell, taste, sight, hearing and balance.

  • To choose a name for this new playscape area that reflects the aboriginal heritage of the area.

School Advisory Council members had the opportunity to provide their feedback and this combined with feedback from our staff will be used by Richard to  finalise the design.  The master plan is divided into 5 stages.  If you would like to view the current master plan it is displayed in our foyer.

Religious Education Focus during the Season of Lent

As is our tradition at St John the Baptist School, children and families will be asked to support Caritas Australia and their good works performed globally. A different Case Study will be highlighted each week during Lent, through RE lessons and/or Prayer times. Please support your child's class as they collect coins for this worthwhile cause. Collection boxes are located in each classroom and the school office.

Fifth Week of Lent (Week beginning Monday April 4th)

This week through Project Compassion we learn about Shaniella who is attending a vocational school in the Solomon Islands supported by Caritas Australia Solomon Islands (CASI).

Not long after Shaniella started, the school was hit by a landslide, flooding, and a cyclone, all in quick succession.

With your kind support, CASI helped install water tanks, restoring clean water access to nearby schools, health centres and the wider community. Training was held in agricultural skills to help boost the school community’s food security, as well as in environmental risk management and emergency responses.

Now, Shaniella can complete her skills training, with enough water and food to eat, and improved sanitation. She is improving her ability to earn an income, learning skills which will expand her job opportunities. Students are also better prepared to respond when disaster strikes.

Watch a short film about Shaniella’s story here.
