1. How long have you been a teacher at CBPS?
I arrived at Caves in 2005 although I taught at Gateshead West PS for 9 years prior.
2. What is your favourite subject to teach?
I would have to say maths and visual arts. Two subjects that were not my strongest in primary school, but it wasn’t until high school when everything started to click for me in these areas. I actually firmly believe it was two teachers in particular that saw my potential and nurtured it. Once someone shows belief in you then things start to fall into place. I have hence built my career on that philosophy. Believe in a child and they will believe in themselves! My weakest link would have to be music so thank goodness you have Mrs Scott to improve your musical skills. I think my music career was over before it started when my Year 6 choir teacher asked me to “mime the high notes”. Proves my prior point really, doesn’t it.
3. What is your favourite year level to teach? Why?
This is a hard one. I have spent most of my time in Stage 2 and thought that was my favourite part of the school. When I went down to the infants it did take me a couple of weeks to adjust to ‘little people’ but once I found my infants’ groove I absolutely loved it. I always said to anyone who would listen…”I think I’ve missed my calling in life!” On the other hand, it was during remote learning that I had a week working with 6E. Even though I was only working online with the senior students, I thoroughly enjoyed my time providing explicit feedback on how to improve their learning in greater detail than you can to 6- and 7-year olds. So I guess, I don’t really have a favourite year, more each grade presents their own rewards (and challenges) which makes teaching such an amazing career.
4. What is your fondest memory (or memories) from your time at CBPS?
I have far too many to list and would not want to think one of my classes were more important to me than any others because every class cohort holds a special place in my heart. As a whole, my fondest memory of Caves Beach is the supportive and caring community that it is, that encompasses the students, teachers and parents. Thanks to the Caves community for walking alongside us, instead of against us, as we educate your children.
5. What is your funniest memory (or memories) from your time at CBPS?
There are soooo many funny moments. In fact, I think most days I have a laugh about something that a child randomly comes out with. I wish I started compiling a book of “Funny Things Kids Say in Classrooms” 25 years ago, although parents are probably glad I didn’t. Overnight excursions always involve funny moments, but I have been on so many now that I can’t pinpoint one exactly.
6. What is your greatest achievement whilst here at CBPS?
My biggest highlight was leading the school as the Relieving Principal in 2017. It was such an honour to guide the largest public school in the local area. I wore that badge everyday with pride.
7. If you could have a coffee with any celebrity, who would it be?
I always have and always will be a Michael Jordan fan!! Being an ex-basketballer myself, I find his dedication and work ethic in his pursuit of excellence quite inspirational and his tenacity when the chips were down absolutely mind-blowing…a legend in my eyes!
8. If you could give 1 piece of advice to the students and staff of CBPS, what would it be?
In a world where you can be anything….Be Kind!!!
