Welcome Back BBQ Breakfast

It was exciting to see so many parents turn up on Tuesday morning despite the pouring rain. It really showed me how much parents needed and valued the opportunity to come into the school. I spoke to many parents also that expressed how happy they were with the school and their child’s teacher. It was heartening to hear. I must start by thanking the local Lion’s Club for cooking the BBQ. Anyone would have thought, with the rain, they would have cancelled turning up at 6am to cook a BBQ for us. Thank you also to our wonderful but small band of P&C volunteers who support us so consistently. Mrs Tangye organised the event but was in isolation at the time so had to do it from home. She still did a great job. Thank you to her committee, especially Mrs Aird, Miss Stewart, Mrs Smith, Mrs Ireland and Mrs Klein who pulled it together on the day. I know the children enjoyed it and hope you did as well.

Requesting an NDIS-funded therapy service for your child at School

We have many external service providers coming into the school. These include physiotherapists speech pathologists and occupational therapists. In most cases, these therapies can be delivered at home or in a therapist’s office. Some therapies may be best delivered in school during school time. There are guidelines around these providers coming into schools and I want to ensure these are followed correctly. A copy of the guidelines will be sent to all families who have external providers coming into the school currently.

Please find the guidelines here- https://education.nsw.gov.au/teaching-and-learning/disability-learning-and-support/resources/external-providers#Information4

Please be aware, providers should not be contacting the school directly without you having contacted us first.

NAPLAN

Between Tuesday 10 May and Friday 20 May 2022, students at our school in Years 3 and 5 will sit the NAPLAN online assessments between

Students may be exempt from the NAPLAN tests if they:

• are newly arrived in Australia (less than one year before the test) and with a language background other than English, or

• have significant intellectual disability and/or significant co-existing conditions which severely limit their capacity to participate in the tests.

All other students are expected to participate in the tests.

Students may be withdrawn from NAPLAN by their parent or carer after consultation with the school principal. To withdraw your child from NAPLAN, a parent or carer consent form must be signed. Please make an appointment with your child’s teacher if you need to discuss your child’s participation in NAPLAN.

Any questions? Contact the NAPLAN team on 1300 119 556 or naplan.nsw@nesa.nsw.edu.au.

For further information about NAPLAN, visit the NESA website.

Anti-Bullying Forum

We had a very productive Anti-Bullying day on Friday 18th March. It has had a very positive impact on our student and given them a much better understanding of bullying. We had hoped to have a parent forum before the end of term. However, apart from the fact that we have had a lot on, we also want to do a follow-up day with students next term and will hold the parent forum after that.

Values Education- Respect

Our students are continuing to learning about the value of respect. Its great if the values we are teaching can be reinforced at home. Have a talk with children about the points on the accompanying poster.

Some other further ideas to help at home include;

·         If you child’s attitude becomes disrespectful, find time to sit down with them for a chat. Let them know you noticed their attitude and know when there is disrespect on the outside it is often a reflection of what is happening on the inside. Ask what is happening and listen.

·         Give them hugs and positive remarks about what you treasure about them-for no reason.

DOGS on School Grounds

Dogs are not allowed on school grounds without the permission of the principal. Dogs may not come onto school grounds after hour or at any time including people picking up children from OOSH.

Kind Regards

Sandy Notley

NAPLAN

The National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) is a point in time assessment of literacy and numeracy skills. Students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9 participate in the annual tests in writing, reading, conventions of language (spelling, grammar and punctuation) and numeracy. All NSW schools will sit NAPLAN online in 2022.

Our school will be participating in NAPLAN between 10 and 20 May 2022.

In preparation for NAPLAN, our school will also be participating in practice tests. The practice test is a trial run and key preparation activity for NAPLAN in May. It is not an assessment of student ability, and the tests will not be marked. Excessive preparation for NAPLAN is not recommended. Students can use the public demonstration site (https://www.nap.edu.au/online-assessment/public-demonstration-site) to familiarise themselves with the types of questions and tools available in NAPLAN.

If you have any questions about NAPLAN, please contact your child’s teacher.

Sentral's Parent Portal & App

This week, we sent home information & instructions for our Kindergarten parents to join the Sentral for Parents App. Thank you to all the Kinder parents who have joined so far!

Letters will be sent home next week for students in Years 1 - 6. Please wait until you receive your instruction letter to register. Sentral advise that the best way to sign up is online (not through the App). Your letter contains a special access key to link to your child(ren). After you have registered & linked to your child, then you should download the App & sign in.

Sentral is the main computer administration system we use at our school. Over the course of the year, we will use more features of the Sentral for parents App as we transition away from Skoolbag.

We will be using the App to book in parent-teacher interviews such as our upcoming Kindergarten interviews & for you to access your child's school report.

CANTEEN HELP REQUIRED

WELCOME Dee - our new canteen supervisor!

This is a call out to parents who may be able to volunteer a few hours on a Wednesday, Thursday or Friday.

2 hours of your time is all that is required. Any time you could give would be greatly appreciated.

Please contact the office if this is something you may be able to help with.

Your children would love to see you at lunch time, helping out :-)

School Updates App

Have you downloaded the Department's School Updates App? We are encouraging parents to download it as we prepare to return to school. Once downloaded, you can register your school (GPS) & the App will send you an alert should we need to close due to a COVID case or bushfire.

Skoolbag App

Do you have our Skoolbag app? If not, why not download it to keep up-to-date with all the latest news happening around the school. Just go to your application store and search Gwandalan Public School.
