Respect, Responsibility, Safety

Principal's Message

Is it the end of Term 2 or 3? What has actually happened this term? Were we doing remote learning this term or was that last term? It really all simply blends into '2020'. Perhaps the only thing we can be certain about is that school holidays are now upon us.
What a year, however, we are surviving and while surviving we continue to move forward. Our Year 12's are almost into their final exams with last minute preparations going into the first week of Term 4. They have had so much 'thrown at them' but continue to remain resilient and survive. Year 11 have finished and will become Year 12 without really being able to finish a normal Year 11. Our Year 7 to 10 students continue to work through their learning but no one can really say that school life has been normal. Term 4 will bring some relaxations of the COVID-19 guidelines but there will still be remaining guidelines we need to adhere to.
Maybe, just for now,  we all enjoy the next two weeks, rest, relax and return next term to see what awaits in the next chapter of 'The Year 2020'.

Wellbeing Update at THS

RUOK? Day

Friday, 11th September was a great sunny day for students to be sharing time with teachers and asking RUOK? It was great to see a lot of yellow on the oval.

We have lots of student happy snaps from the RUOK? Day activities on our website.

https://tumut-h.schools.nsw.gov.au/gallery/ruok-day-11th-september-2020.html

Music students entertained the crowds at our RUOK? Day activities and created a relaxing atmosphere with live music in the background. The weather was beautiful and the Batyr organising committee did a fantastic job.

Students were engaged in a PowerPoint presentation prepared by our Batyr Student Chapter crew and is displayed below.

Tips for our Senior Students

Years 11 and 12 can be stressful, and the situation with COVID-19  has only added to the uncertainty and challenges of senior studies. It is important to have some strategies to manage emotions to re-focus our thinking and look after ourselves.

Please read the attached for great tips on how to deal with changes and challenges.

Tomorrow Man and Tomorrow Woman for Year 10

Year 10 students participated in zoom workshops with Tomorrow Man and Tomorrow Woman. A new experience for our students to engage in a group workshop using technology.

Students embraced the concept and enjoyed empowering each other.

The Tomorrow Woman 'HER CODE' virtual workshop aims to unpack the history, expectations and facts of modern day womanhood, and to cultivate and practise using their innate voice.

The virtual 'Breaking the Man Code'  workshop aims to question the rules of masculinity, creating space for real and honest conversations.

Year 12 End of Year

The end of this year sees the celebration of the achievements of our Year 12 students after 13 years of schooling.

This year has been like no other and as a school we have a number of activities organised to help students celebrate this important milestone.

Term 3 - Week 10

·         On Friday, the 25th of September, Year 12 students are allowed to wear a costume of their choice (like previous years) to fundraise for their chosen charity (which is the Black Dog Institute). On the Friday, students will attend year meetings where they will receive fun awards, which have been organised by the students. Grant Hardwick will also be attending these meetings to gain footage for the video he is making on behalf of the school to be given to Year 12.

·         Students will be given flyers (designed by a Year 12 student) which promotes the Black Dog Institute, including the link for online donations. Students will then be going out into the community after their year meeting to deliver these flyers to businesses, their families and friends.

Term 4 - Week 1

·         Students will attend normal lessons from Monday the 12th of October to Thursday the 15th of October to revise content prior to their exams which start in Week 2.

·         On Friday, the 16th of October, students will come to school for their Year 12 Farewell Assembly which will commence at 12pm. This event will be held in the MPC during Periods 3 and 4 and will be videoed and live streamed for families to watch.

·         At this assembly students will receive their Semester Two reports, awards which are normally given at Presentation Night, and a Yearbook to commemorate their schooling. They will hear speeches delivered by the Captains, the Principal and their Year Adviser. They will watch a musical item, a farewell video from the staff and also the video which is being produced using photographs collected by staff and students from their school years. This video is a gift from the school which the students will be able to keep. Students are free to go home after this assembly.

Term 4 - Week 5

Many local venues and options have been investigated for the students to have a farewell. Unfortunately due to numbers (there are 65 in Year 12) and the Covid-19 restrictions placed on venues a farewell involving parents/families cannot occur. This is due to social distancing requirements and numbers of patrons venues can accommodate. However, the school will provide the opportunity for Year 12 students to come to the school MPC on Thursday the 12th of November from 6 - 7.30pm to celebrate the end of their examinations.

Year 12 Dress up Day - Friday, 25th September 2020

Tell Them From Me Survey

We would like to encourage our parents/carers to complete the Parent Tell Them From Me survey.

Parents may choose to do the survey more than once to relate the experiences of each of their children.

This is a very important survey to give the school feedback. We ask parents to be honest in giving their responses.

This will assist us to better understand the experiences of your children in our school as well as raising awareness of concerns or considerations which our parents may have in regard to the education of your children.

Completion by Friday, 16th October 2020 would be greatly appreciated.

Tumut High School Canteen

Our canteen has introduced online ordering through My School Connect.

To register and download the app follow link https://myschoolconnect.com.au/

Over 120 families have registered for this service and find it so easy to use. Students can collect their ordered lunch a lot quicker rather than waiting in line to purchase on the spot.

Features include quick and easy sign up, option for payments, order for more than one child and order for more than one day.

Canteen donation

Our school Canteen has donated $3000 to the THS P&C who in turn have donated the funds to Tumut High School to go towards a new projector and screen in the MPC.

The P&C were successful in a UNICEF grant of $3000 and this too was donated to the school for the MPC project.

Pictured are Principal Mr Dixon, Canteen Manager Mrs Pendergast, Canteen Assistant Mrs Wickman and THS P&C representative Mrs Dodds at the presentation of $6000 to the school.

Tumut High School P&C Association

Our P&C is in need of new members to keep the committee going.

The P&C manage the school canteen and without a P&C committee we will not be able to have our canteen in 2021. The canteen is self-sufficient but requires the P&C to govern the operations.

Details for a P&C gathering in Term 4 will be advised in October and we encourage all parents and carers to consider being a part of the P&C to ensure our canteen can continue to operate next year.

The committee meet only once a term and there is no requirement for any fundraising.

Meetings are casual and a great place to meet other parents, share ideas and find out about the education happening at Tumut High.

For any questions regarding Tumut High School P&C and/or the Tumut High School Canteen please contact the school and ask for Mrs Kay Dodds - THS P&C Canteen Convenor.

Year 7/8 Premier's Debating Challenge

Winners are grinners! 3 from 3!

Congratulations to our Year 7/8 debating team of Brooke Davies, Jemma Wickman, Marianna Smith and Allie Piper who won their Round 1 debate against Corowa High School. They were the negative for "That we should pay teachers a bonus when their students' test results improve". Coach Mr V was very impressed with their first effort stating students carried themselves well, managing to speak for the allocated 4-6 minute time.

Round 2 saw a great victory over Karabar. The topic was "That we should ban media from downplaying the severity of COVID 19". We were the negative. The team argued that focusing on too much of the reality will lead to hysteria and be detrimental to mental wellbeing.

Round 3 was against Coolamon B "That Year 7 and 8 students should learn self defence at school". We were the negative team. Coach Mr V said "We had a clear victory and according to the adjudicator debating at a level higher than Year 7 and 8, with our knowledge of the status quo and 3rd speaker refutation. A very well deserved victory - girls worked well together and came out on top."

The team is eagerly awaiting details of their progression in the competition for Term 4.

Year 8 Mental Health Expo

Year 8 students were excited to present their Mental Health Expo to others in their year group.

Activities included slime making, decorating pet rocks and Kahoots. All the activities were aimed at managing certain aspects of mental health.

A bit messy but lots of fun and a great way to share the message of self -care being important.

Year 8 Expo

Year 9 Child Studies

Students have been having fun trialling activities during their Child Studies course and have been making the most of our wonderful Resource Centre comparing a variety of children's books and evaluating the educational value of the books for younger children as part of their Child Studies course.

Year 9 Child Studies

Year 9/10 Premier's Debating Challenge

Our Year 9/10 debating team of Megan, Eddie, Daniel & Abbey have also tasted victory winning 2 from 2.

Round 1 was against Temora High School. The topic was "That classes at school should be organised by ability instead of age". Our team were the affirmative and whilst the topic leaned towards a loss for our team, they argued well to score victory.

Round 2 our opponents were Cambridge Park High School and the topic was 'That we should ban social media for people under 18'. We were the negative team and students performed very well, putting forward a decisive argument about the importance of social media for communication, education and the building of responsibility.

Year 11 Premier's Debating Challenge

Our senior debating team have had 2 debates online against Braidwood Central School on the topic "That HSC Assessments should consist solely of examinations". The team of Harry Bottero, Keely Wickman (Yr 10), Andy Dodds and Jeane Van Der Merwe spoke well making the required 8 minutes each. They lost this round but secured a second debate.

Year 11 Next Debate

Next was against Denison College, Bathurst. Keely, Madison Hibbert, Harry and Andy worked hard at collaborating their arguments to debate 'That Olympic athletes should be able to compete as individuals rather than representing a nation.' We were the affirmative and the result was a close one but unfortunately our team were not victorious.
