Principal Report

We value your feedback…

We have held two open events recently, being ‘Open Class Sessions’ (Week 6) and our ‘Fathers’ Day Breakfast’ (Week 7). It has been great to be able to see many of our families and share these events together. We greatly value your feedback to assist with future planning. We encourage you to complete our short survey which can be found here.

NAPLAN 2022

This week, students in Years 3 and 5 will bring home their NAPLAN test results. These tests provide valuable information about the progress of your child. Our school staff analyse both individual student results and overall school achievements including growth for students from Years 3 to 5. Please contact your child’s teacher via the school office or email should you wish to meet and discuss the results further and/or your child’s progress.

SASS Appreciation Week

This week is SASS (School and Support Staff) Appreciation Week. We honour the amazing staff who work tirelessly, often behind the scenes, to ensure our school runs so smoothly. This includes our SLSOs (teacher aides), General Assistant and fabulous office staff. They are often the first person you speak to; work closely to support class and student learning; or working tirelessly to keep our school looking so amazing!

Thank you for all you do!

2023 Planning

We are already in the process of planning for 2023. To support the planning process, please notify the school office in writing or by email if you are aware that your child / children (other than our current Year 6 students) will not be returning to Wamberal Public School in 2023.

During the planning process, we widely explore all options and develop plans to best meet the needs of our students. Class organisation is not finalised though until early 2023, following confirmation of student enrolment numbers and the subsequent accurate staffing levels.

Our school commits an extensive amount of time, care and analysis of data to provide the most effective and productive learning environments for all students, with the school ultimately responsible for all decisions on class placement. Parents and carers wishing to provide information about their child need to complete and return Appendix A of the Class Formation Policy available on our website.

This form clearly outlines the areas that can and cannot be considered during the planning process. A new form must be completed each year and completed forms are required to be returned to the school on or before Friday 26 November 2022 (Term 4 Week 7) for consideration in the 2023 planning process. It is anticipated that any information provided by parents and carers would be consistent with conversations held with the school and / or support already accessed or considered.

Have a great week,

School Communities Coming Together

This term has seen the return of many in-person special events in our school including assemblies, Book Week, Father’s Day and Open Day. It has been great to see our school community come together, with many highlights available to view on our Wamberal Public School Facebook page.

SASS Recognition Week: Thank You to Our Non-Teaching Staff

This week we join schools across our state to recognise and celebrate our non-teaching staff. We are very fortunate to have such helpful and supportive school administrative staff, general assistant and student learning support officers who are a critical interface with our community, helping our learners reach their full potential every day. Thank you to our amazing team!

Indigenous Literacy Day

Today is Indigenous Literacy Day. Our students have celebrated Aboriginal stories, culture and language by participating in various activities including viewing a national digital online story, led by children and sharing their story of life in remote Australia.

Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL)

At Wamberal Public School, we are safe, respectful learners. This week, all students have been learning about being safe, respectful learners when going to the lost property tub.

Have You Recently Changed Your Contact Details?

Please keep the school up to date with your contact details, including your child’s emergency contacts, in case parents or carers are not available in the first instance. Contact details can be updated via the Skoolbag App ‘eForms’.

Check-in Assessment for Year 6

During Term 3 Week 8 our Year 6 students will participate in the Check-in assessment.

The Check-in assessment is a NSW Department of Education online literacy and numeracy assessment available to support schools to assess and monitor student learning.

The assessment can supplement existing school practices to identify how students are performing in literacy and numeracy and to help teachers tailor their teaching more specifically to student needs. Students with a disability may receive the same level of support during the assessment they would normally receive in the classroom.

  • The assessment will be scheduled for our Year 6 students during Week 8
  • All students complete a reading assessment and a numeracy assessment. Year 6 students will also complete a writing task

Transition to Kindergarten 2023

It has been lovely welcoming our newest families to Wamberal via the school tours. The tours are for Kindergarten 2023 students and 1-2 parents or carers. To book in for a school tour, please click here.

Have a great week everyone.

Fathers’ Day

What a great celebration of fathers we had at our school last week. I hope everyone has been able to enjoy some special time with their Dad, grandparent and other special male role models. It was lovely to chat with a few of you when your children gave you a guided tour of our wonderful Library.

Fathers and other male role models play an essential role in encouraging a love of reading and regular reading habits in our young readers.

We love books!

It is a wonderful reward when a student returns their loans from the previous week and enthusiastically announces that they “loved these books”. Thank you Parker (1 Green).

Scholastic Book Club Issue 6 2022

Book Club Issue 6 brochures orders will close this Friday, September 9. Thank you for supporting Book Club as the school gains resources from this program.

Skoolbag app

Please see the Skoolbag app for important Library updates.

Please feel free to contact the Library through the school office if I can help in any way.

Happy reading,

Teacher Librarian

Currently reading from this Year’s Children’s Book Council of Australia Book of the Year Lists — Blue Flower by Sonya Hartnett (PICTURE BOOK OF THE YEAR AWARD).

A young child feels shy about making friends, not being funny or a fast runner. But through her love of art, a conversation with her mother and her observations about nature she comes to see that being different can be a good thing. Recommended for younger readers aged 5+.

Each award category has six titles. We will explore these over the coming term. Winners have now been announced.

Chaplain's Corner

Many times, something might happen during our day that we don’t like. It could be a little thing like someone disagreeing with us about something minor or it could be a bigger thing like bad weather for weeks at a time. Sometimes these events or situations are unsettling and a cause for unhappiness or anxiety where we, or our children, feel very out of control.

A very useful tool to help with problem-solving and processing such situations is looking at (or creating) a Circle of Control. A Circle of Control is a way to look at what is within your control and what is not. It can aid in accepting situations that are out of our control and figuring out what we can do while in them. Also, it can help children to consider their options of response.

Some things that fit in each category are:

Things I Can Control: My ideas, attitude, responses, actions, effort, feelings, words, decisions, taking care of myself, how I treat others, etc.

Things I Can’t Control: Others' ideas, attitudes, choices, feelings, opinions, actions, being sick, the weather, what has happened in the past, what my parents or teachers ask me to do, etc.

When we take time to look at situations in this light, we can be free to let go of things outside of our control and make positive coping choices. While it can be hard to realise something is out of our control, it can free us from the need to worry about it. It also brings to light our options within a given situation. For example, I may not be able to control what someone else says about me, but I can be sure that I am always choosing kindness when I relate to others. Or I may not be able to choose the weather, but I can decide if I walk in the rain or cuddle up under a blanket with a book.

If this sounds like something useful to you, I’d encourage you to do a search for ‘Circle of Control images’ in your web browser. There are so many out there and you can choose the one that suits you or your children best to look at together. You can take it one step further by creating your own focusing on a specific situation. One idea is to trace a hand and write down inside the outline all the things in your control (if it’s in your hand, it’s in your control). Outside the hand, you can brainstorm the sorts of things outside your control.

As always, when we feel like things are really out of our control, it can be important to seek some support. Have courage to reach out.

WPS P&C

Many Thanks

Thank you to the hard-working band of volunteers who organised the Father's Day gift stalls and Father's Day breakfast. Many thanks as well to Simone and the team at Belle Property Central Coast for their fabulous support of the breakfast.

The P&C would also like to thank the school community for the strong participation in canteen healthy food month. Entries need to be returned to the canteen by September 16.

Essential Canteen Price Rise

Due to continuing cost pressures there will be price rises across the canteen menu from the start of Term 4. The decision to raise prices was not taken lightly and increases have been kept to a minimum. The P&C appreciates your understanding on this matter.

Brickfest

Brickfest is coming to Brisbane Water Secondary College, Woy Woy Campus, Edward Street, WoyWoy on Sunday 18 September. It's a family fun day and an all-weather event.

The cost is $8 per person or $30 for a family of 4

Tickets can be bought on-line at trybooking.com/CBLIX

Shop and Support our School

DID you know that buying groceries at a Ritchies IGA Supermarket can help support our P&C? Wamberal Public School P&C is one of the recipients you can elect to support when you register for a free Ritchies card or download the free RitchiesCard App for your mobile phone. Our P&C has been fortunate to receive more than $8000 since the inception of the program.

Spread the word to family and friends. If they live far away and shop at a Ritchies IGA near them, they can still select our P&C as their nominated recipient.
