Sutton Public School

Week 2 Term 4 - 25th October

Principal's Welcome

Sutton gets social

We have established a School Social Media Team to enhance communication, build school connectedness and foster student and parent engagement.  We recognise the potential of social media and how it can benefit our school when used well.

This week our School Social Media Team has participated in a two day workshop developing the skills, knowledge and understanding required to maximise the positive impact that technology and social media can have for our school's communication.

Schools are subject to a level of public scrutiny over and above most other public organisations because we work with children.  This is why it is vital that we employ best practice in the use of social media. We want our students, your children, to be safe as we celebrate their school experiences and achievements.

Our school adheres to the Department of Education's Social Media Policy and Code of Conduct.  We have chosen to enhance our use of Facebook to keep our community informed of events and happenings knowing the security and privacy settings in place ensure our page is safe and secure.

We invite you to engage with the official Facebook page for Sutton Public School.  We ask that in joining our community on Facebook you understand the Terms and Conditions for use and follow the Rules of Engagement for our page.  You'll find these on both our Facebook page and our school website.

Enjoy our posts and help spread the news about the great things happening at our school.

Musica Viva live at Sutton

On Monday 28th October all students will enjoy a live performance by Da Vinci’s Apprentice - a trio of musicians equipped with the weird and wonderful instruments of Da Vinci’s time. Da Vinci’s Apprentice had an inspiring message for our students: to hear the music in the world around them, and be inspired to make their dreams a reality!

Snake safety at school

With temperatures rising throughout the state, school may encounter snakes as the reptiles seek refuge from the heat. Snakes usually prefer to retreat when people are nearby but if they feel threatened, they can become defensive.  When left alone snakes can present little or no danger.

If a snake is sighted at school staff have procedures in place to respond safely and appropriately. Our staff will:

  • ensure all students and staff are kept away from the surrounding area and that the area remains out of bounds until the snake has been removed/captured
  •  leave the snake alone while monitoring its movement
  • contact our local licensed snake catcher to remove the snake
  • treat the snake as venomous until identified by a snake identification expert
  • not try to catch or kill the snake

There are also a number of snake prevention measures we will implement  including:

  • cleaning up rubbish regularly
  • removing unused materials
  • keeping grass short
  • keeping exit doors to buildings closed

Bush fire response plan

Our school is preparing  for the bushfire season.  With the support of the Sutton Rural Fire Service,  our school and community will monitor local conditions during the bushfire season – particularly when there is bushfire activity in the local area  - and be ready to respond.

Our Bushfire Management Plan, which has been reviewed by the Rural Fire Service,  is available on our website.

The department has conducted assessments of all NSW Government schools in bushfire-prone areas to determine the level of risk for bushfire. Sutton Public School lies within the centre of Sutton village and its direct bushfire exposures are deemed to be of relatively low risk.

Our bushfire management plan ensures our staff

  • Know the risk to our school and community
  • Know the plan and can respond to an emergency
  • Have the school ready to minimise danger
  • Are alert and aware during periods of increased risk
  • Are trained to implement an appropriate incident response following an event

P&C News - Week 2, Term 4 2019

THANK YOU!

Thank you to Sophie and everyone who volunteered for this year’s Murrumbateman Field Days. With your hard work the weekend raised just over $2000 that will go to improving our school.

Thanks as well goes to everyone who baked and volunteered for Alpine Classic Car Rally morning tea hosted by Sutton PS last Saturday.

HOW SHOULD WE SPEND OUR MONEY? HAVE YOUR SAY!

Should the P&C spend money on better classrooms, covered walkways, a new greenhouse, or something entirely different? What do YOU think? The P&C would like to understand what the priorities are for the school community. It's time to have your say! But be quick - this survey will only be available for a week (until Tuesday 29th).

https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/JHFDQ32

Once you’ve taken part in the survey, come along to our next meeting to discuss the outcomes.

The NEXT MEETING of the P&C is TERM 4, WEEK 3, THURSDAY 31st October at 7pm.

Please remember all are welcome, however if you can’t attend but would like something added to the agenda, please contact the P&C via email (suttonpublicschool@pandcaffiliate.org.au.) or on our Facebook page (@SPSPandCAssociation) to discuss.

Don’t forget we post all relevant P&C information and our events on our Facebook page, in the newsletter, on the noticeboard next to Kindergarten and via Skoolbag and all meeting minutes are available via the School website and upon request.

SUTTON COUNTRY FAIR 2020

Next term will see the P&C begin planning for our next Fair, which is to be held in Term 1 on Saturday 28th March.

The P&C are seeking a co-coordinator to work with Linda to run the Fair. This role will require a high level of commitment, however is a fun event to be involved in and is our major school fundraiser for the year. If we can’t find anyone to take on the co-coordinator role, the Fair may not be able to run in 2020, so please consider if you can donate some time and organisational skills.

(Note: you do not have to be a member of the P&C to take on this role).

Book Fair

Our annual Book Fair will be held from Wednesday 13th November to Friday 15th November.

Schoolastic supply a wide range of titles, including new releases, for students and families to choose from. Purchases may be made before school, from 8.30am and lunchtime. This particular event allows children and their families to choose books for themselves.

So, save the date!

Class of the Week

5/6M

5/6M were lucky enough to participate in a baseball workshop on Tuesday. They had a great time learning skills such as catching, throwing and hitting. Towards the end of the workshop students participated in a longest hit competition and Lachlan G managed to hit the furthest on the day. All students participated with enthusiasm and some students were lucky enough to win a Canberra Cavalry shirt and signed baseball.
