Our School Values:

Respect    Honesty    Teamwork    Confidence    Excellence    Endeavour

Nhill College would like to acknowledge the Traditional Owners of the Wimmera Mallee area: the Wotjobaluk, Jaadwa, Jadawadjali, Wergaia and Jupagalk people, and pay our respects to Elders past, present and future.

School Wide Positive Behaviour Support Program

The School Wide Positive Behaviour Support program is designed to bring together school communities to develop positive, safe and supportive learning cultures by helping to foster an environment that assists schools to improve social, emotional, behavioural and academic outcomes for children.  As part of the SWPBS program, a rewards system has been developed to encourage students to always:

  • Be Safe
  • Be Respectful
  • Be a Learner

Camps Week

Nhill College has always tried to provide a wide range of experiences for students as part of the rich camps and excursion program offered across the school.  Largely due to circumstances beyond our control, three separate camps managed to be held during this week, meaning that not only were our Years 5, 6, 8 and half of our Year 9 cohorts off-site throughout the week, but we were also without quite a large proportion of our teaching and ES staff who were supervising students during these camp programs.

Our Year 5-6 students have been in Melbourne experiencing the Zoo, the Eureka Sky Deck, the MCG, the Queen Victoria Market, Science Works and a little known theatre production about some wizard called Harry Potter.  Our Year 9X students were paddling their way along the Glenelg River in the second of our Year 9 Canoe Trips.  And our Year 8 students have spent the week at Rubicon experiencing all manner of outdoor activities that have been carefully matched with our Humanities curriculum.  Once again, we have been extremely proud of the manner in which our students have conducted themselves while they have been away, and are very pleased to have received so many compliments about their behaviour and how well they have represented their school.  We look forward to welcoming all of our campers back next week.  Thank you to all of the staff who have attended these camps with our students - and to Mrs Dufty who has somehow managed to keep all remaining classes covered despite the many staff absences this week.

Parent Teacher Interviews

Parent Teacher Interviews will be held on Tuesday 4th April.  On this day there will be no classes at school and there will be no buses operating.  Interviews will commence at 12.00pm and finish at 7.00pm.  The Progress Reports that were made available on Compass last Friday included an option for teachers to request an interview with students, but families are still encouraged to make an appointment to attend an interview even if one was not specifically requested.  We would also like to encourage families to bring their child along to attend these interviews so they can participate in the discussion about their progress so far this year.  It is hoped that this new format will lead to an increase in the number of families who attend these interviews.  Parents can still make bookings for an interview by logging in to Compass, selecting Community (the people icon), then choosing Conferences from the drop down menu.  Bookings will close at 9.00am on Monday 3rd April.

New Flagpoles

Life became just a little more complicated for our hard working Year 6 flag monitors this week, as we took delivery of three new flagpoles to replace the single flagpole that has been in place since 2005.  With three poles, we can now proudly fly each of the Australian, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander flags.

Last Day of Term: 2.30pm Dismissal

Just a reminder to all families that school will dismiss at the earlier time of 2.30pm on the last day of term, Thursday 6th April.  All school buses will also depart at this earlier time.

Elevate Education brings study skills to Nhill College

This week we welcomed back to our school, presenters from Elevate Education to work with our VCE students on study skills so that they may achieve to their full potential.

Elevate have researched what the top students are doing and have developed simple, effective and practical skills based on this research. As our presenter highlighted, many of the skills and strategies can also be transferred to job search, employment, further study and sport situations.

Our Year 11 and 12 VCE students participated in two sessions – firstly, on being a Study Master and then on Ace Your Exams.

The student feedback on these workshops was very positive, with the majority of students having taken away at least one new thing they had learnt. Our Elevate Education presenter also congratulated the College on the amazing students we have – they engaged positively during the sessions and asked great questions.

At each session, students used a workbook to take notes – we encourage students to refer back to this during the year, and we encourage parents to ask their child to show them what they did.

If there is interest from students, Nhill College teachers are more than happy to offer follow up sessions during lunchtimes and with teachers in class. Study skill sessions are not something you should just listen to once and then forget – the skills need to be practiced, reinforced and developed to find what works best for each individual student. Remember the importance of REVIEW!

Students also have access to the Elevate student portal – elevateeducation.com.au - this provides further tips, practice questions as well as other resources.

Nhill College provides funding for these workshops because we know that they are a solid investment in the learning outcomes for those who participate – it was an excellent opportunity for our students to be able to have this high-quality program available in our own school.

Year 12 students will work with Elevate Education again later in the year as a lead up to the end of year exams.

 Mrs. Cole – Year 12 Co-ordinator

Students enjoy the Elevate Education presentation

Congratulations!

Three people who must have  paid extra special attention to the Elevate presentation when they were in school were Miss McQueen, Mr Mason and Miss Locke.  Because they listened to the advice they received, not only were they able to complete their Year 12 studies, but they also went on to graduate from their respective tertiary programs at Federation University.  Congratulations to Miss McQueen, Mr Mason and Miss Locke who attended their graduation ceremony earlier this week.

On the Buses...

A recent check through our records has revealed that not all bus travellers have completed and submitted the Application for Permission to Travel on the school bus system.  As it is a condition of bus travel that this form is submitted, a new permission form will be sent home to those families in case the original form has been misplaced.

On the topic of school buses, it is timely to remind all students who travel to and from school on the school bus network that they are required to remain seated - in their allocated seat - and wear their seatbelt at all times while on the bus.  Bus Captains have been appointed on each of the 6 buses servicing the Nhill school community and they do a fantastic job with their responsibility for maintaining school bus safety, allowing bus drivers to keep their focus firmly on the road.  As part of this responsibility, Bus Captains also have the authority to report any inappropriate behaviours that might occur on the bus.

Bus Drivers Wanted

Wimmera Roadways are looking to boost their stocks of relief bus drivers to assist with the morning and after school bus runs.  Anyone who may be interested in becoming a bus driver on one of the school runs is encouraged to contact Wimmera Roadways' Horsham office at 53811548.

SWPBS

Nhill College reward system called ROARWARDS has continued this term, with numerous students receiving ROARWARDS on a daily basis already this term. Students receive ROARWARDS by demonstrating Being Respectful, Being a Learner or Being Safe. At the Secondary assembly, all the students that received an award in the last two weeks were placed in a draw to win a lucky dip prize. Students are randomly drawn by using an electronic spinning wheel. The winners were -

Week 8 - TBA

Week 9 - TBA

Congratulations to all students who received a ROARWARD in the last couple of weeks. Don't forget to scan them for points for the Reward shop.

Respectful Relationship Awards

In the primary section each week, students learn a different value to practice in the classroom and out in the yard. These values can help to influence students physical health, promote self-esteem, assist them in developing a sense of belonging in our school and enhance stronger social skills with mutual respect for everyone.

The Respectful Relationship Value for last week was Caring and this week was Cleanliness

The caring award winners were  F - Moung, 1/2 - Nicholas , 3/4 - Liv, 4/5 - Zali and 5/6 -Doh Htoo

The cleanliness award winners were F - Isla, 1/2 Pip (absent), 3/4-Max, 4/5-Blake, 5/6-Julia

The Canteen vouchers was awarded to Darcy S-  and Nicholas

Congratulations to all students who were nominated.

Junior Reading Awards

Students in the junior primary classes were recognised for their excellent progress in reading this week at the primary assembly.

Learning the most commonly occurring words in English is essential to every child's reading success.

The Magic Coloured Words make up 70% of all words in reading and writing.

The Magic Coloured Words have been divided into coloured levels according to their frequency - Golden Words, Red Words, Blue Words, Green Words, Orange Words, Indigo Words and Violet Words are contained in the first 100 words.

Congratulations to Bryden on your great achievement in reading the Magic Coloured Words.

Once the Magic Coloured Words have been achieved, students then move on to the 1000 FRY words. Learning all 1000 words in the Fry list will equip our students to read about 90% of the words in a typical book, newspaper, or website. The Fry words are listed by the frequency with which they occur and are broken down into groups of 100.

Congratulations to Matilda on your great achievement in reading 200 FRY words.

COVID-19 Reminders

Current COVIDSafe measures in Victorian government schools require us to continue to implement important practices to reduce the risk of COVID-19 transmission.

Vaccinations

Staff and students are strongly recommended to ensure they keep up-to-date with all recommended and available COVID-19 vaccinations as vaccinations are the best way to protect individuals, families and school communities from the severe effects of COVID-19 and reduce the spread of the virus.

Rapid Antigen Testing

It is recommended that rapid antigen tests (RATs) are used by students and staff :

  • If you have symptoms of COVID-19 infection, no matter how mild
  • If you are a household or close contact of someone who has COVID-19
  • If you are a social contact of someone who has COVID-19.

The Department of Health recommends that all Victorians should report their positive RAT result to the Department of Health online, or by calling 1800 675 398. Students (or their parents) should also report a positive result to their school, either through the COVID Test portal or by phone or written notification.

Rapid Antigen Tests are available for all Victorians from Council sites. People can get 2 free packs (10 tests) for themselves and 2 free packs (10 tests) for each of their household members.

Face Masks

Face masks continue to be available from the school and any staff or students who wish to wear a mask is supported to do so.

Management of suspected cases of COVID-19

A ‘suspected’ case means a person who displays any COVID-19 symptoms

who has not yet tested positive for COVID-19.

It is recommended that any staff member, student or visitor who is symptomatic should undergo testing for COVID-19. Parents of students who are symptomatic will be asked to collect their child from school and to keep them home until they are no longer symptomatic.

Management of a confirmed case at school

Where a student or staff member is identified as a positive case, they should isolate for a minimum of 5 days and not attend school until their symptoms have resolved. There is no longer a requirement for principals to inform the school community of a positive case associated with the school.

Nhill College BYOD Options available for 2023 through Edunet

Computers are being used more frequently in many aspects of our teaching and learning programs, and Nhill College strives to make a 1:1 provision of devices available for student use in the classroom.  However, students using school-owned laptops are not permitted to take them home at night and these devices must be returned to the charging station in the library at the end of each day.  Students wishing to access devices at home to support their learning are encouraged to explore the range of devices available through Edunet as part of our BYOD program.  In addition to gaining access to your own device, purchases through Edunet provide students with school based IT support and manufacturer's warranty, as well as access to the College's network, servers and printers.  Families purchasing a BYOD will also be provided with access to the Department of Education's Microsoft 365 suite, which gives free access to Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc on up to 5 family devices.

To assist those families interested in exploring BYOD options, we have new and updated models for our BYOD program through Edunet.  Please open the link below for details about the devices.  Mr Shrive is happy to take questions from parents or students if they are looking at purchasing a BYOD.  Devices specifically chosen for Nhill College students cover a range of specifications and price levels, and include the following options:

  • Lenovo ThinkPad 11e Yoga 5th Gen
  • Lenovo 500w Gen 3
  • Lenovo 13w Yoga
  • Lenovo ThinkPad L13 Yoga Gen 3
  • Apple MacBook Air 13.6"
  • Apple MacBook Pro 13.3"

All devices are listed at education prices, which can be viewed along with each device's specifications at Edunet's online ordering portal via http://nhillcollege.technologyportal.com.au .

The Access Code you will need to access the portal is NCBYOD.

Alternatively, scan the QR code attached to this article to be taken directly to the Nhill College Edunet portal.

A video explaining the benefits of using Edunet can also be found here:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_bWjEs_iA58

Mobile Phones

Students and parents are reminded that in accordance with the DET's Mobile Phones - Student Use Policy, personal mobile phones must not be used at Nhill College during school hours, including lunchtime and recess, unless an exception has been granted.

At Nhill College we understand that students may bring a personal mobile phone to school, particularly if they are travelling independently to and from school.  However, students who choose to bring a mobile phone to school must have them switched off and securely stored during school hours in their lockers (7-12) or in the secure storage safe provided in their classroom (F-6).  For any questions relating to this policy, please feel free to contact the school.

Sunsmart

Students are reminded of the requirement for them to wear a broad brimmed hat in the yard during recess and lunch times on days when the UV rating reaches 3 or above.  Nhill College parents are now able to use the school's website to find out when it is predicted that UV index levels will reach 3 or more, which generally occurs between mid-August and April.  The Sunsmart App - which can also be downloaded onto your mobile devices - tells parents the maximum UV index levels predicted for the day as well as the hours when sunscreen measures are recommended.  This link has been attached to the front page of our website (https://www.nhillcollege.vic.edu.au/), so please visit often and keep your children safe.

Now that we are entering into that time of year when UV levels are likely to reach 3 or above, it is an appropriate time to remind everyone to ensure that students have remembered to bring their broad brimmed hats to school.  Very affordable options are available in the Uniform Store if required.  In addition, extra shade has been secured in the yard following the installation of the large shade sail in the courtyard as well as the one placed over the school BBQ area earlier this year.

School Attendance: Every Day Counts

Research shows that the academic and social development of students is affected each day they are absent, and that going to school every day is the single most important part of your child's education.  Following the potential disruptions to the social and academic progress of students caused due to COVID-19 over the past two years, it is more important than ever for children to be at school.

If your child is unwell or absolutely cannot attend school for some reason, it is important to let the school know of their absence and the reason why prior to the day if planned or at the start of the day if the absence is not planned.  The easiest way to do this is via Compass.  Alternatively, you can contact the office at school on 5391 2111.

If your child is absent and we have not been notified, you will receive a text message asking you to contact the school with an explanation.  If we do not receive a reply to our text message, we will be following up with a phone call.
