Newsletter: Term 2 Issue 5

Principal's Message

Well done to Room 6 who presented their assembly item influenced by our school’s involvement with the Resilience Project. The message of ‘Lets all be Kind’ is a great one to spread across the school and the students prepared a fantastic item using singing and actions to bring their song to life.

It is still a privilege to acknowledge all the wonderful work going on in our school through our merit awards and most recently our Open Night. Thank you to all the families who attended the evening to celebrate our students’ achievement thus far. They certainly have been involved in some amazing work. The night was once again strongly supported by our P&C who continue to go above and beyond.

Formal reports will be distributed via email on Monday 27 June 2022. Student reports are available to be downloaded from the link for one month. Please email the school at newman.ps@education.wa.edu.au if you would prefer a hard copy. In Semester 1 2022, as previously communicated, some classes have been particularly impacted by interruptions to learning caused by Covid-19. As always, if you have any queries about your child’s written report, please contact the class teacher for further information.

I would like to thank our school community for their support over the last few months and express my sincere appreciation for your understanding and cooperation as we navigated our school through some extraordinary times. As we approach the end of Term 2, many families including staff will be traveling over the holidays. Please enjoy the break and travel safely.

Please see the below some of the things happening throughout the school and details for upcoming events and dates.

Room 20: Blueback By Tim Winton

This term, the students in Room 20 have been reading Blueback as our class novel.

Blueback is set in a fictional town in Western Australia. Tim Winton is the author of the book. There are many themes throughout the book, including sustainability, family and belonging. Blueback tells a story of life in tune with the environment and living simply.

‘Sustainability’ is a cross curriculum priority for the Western Australian Curriculum, and the novel ‘Blueback’ embodies this. It has given our class many opportunities to discuss the effect of human involvement in natural environments, national parks, greed and living simply.

Our class is listening to the story and writing responses to the story as each chapter is told. We have researched western blue gropers and drawn pictures of them too. What incredibly interesting fish, they can live until they’re 70 years old. Please enjoy our drawings of these magnificent fish!
