Delany College - Granville

Newsletter Term 2 Week 9

Paul Easton

Acting Principal

Assistant Principal

We are, after a very disrupted term, suddenly at the conclusion of Semester One. Despite this interruption, learning recommenced quickly and both staff and students are back into routines. I also observe with pleasure that the daily attendance rate of students is high. This is essential after missed classes, and I hope and trust we can carry this through the remainder of the year. I wish you a safe school holiday when it arrives.

The Delany community

We have had the privilege of easing back into ‘normal’ classes with a shortened timetable. However, from the beginning of Term 3 our school day will begin at 8:45am and conclude at 3:05pm.

There have been quite a few small but significant changes throughout Semester One. Here are just a few:

  • the introduction of a gym - for use both before and after school, as well as being incorporated into PDHPE practical lessons

  • renovation of two of the technology classrooms

  • creating a student-friendly Year 12 space at the top of the school.

We envisage more updates throughout the year that will build a student-centred learning and social environment.

The academic community

As I passed through classes last week, I was stopped by a discussion in our Year 7 Geography class. The topic was “water scarcity”. My mind immediately went to rural Australia which has been, and many parts continue to be, in desperate drought. Mrs Lee invited students to explain their ideas about water scarcity.  The first student spoke about Sierra Leone; the second about Syria. What fantastic responses!  As I wrote last time, Delany is a richer community because of our differences and it was a privilege (and somewhat humbling) to listen to students’ life experiences far different than my own.

Year 11 Semester reports were posted to families last week. If you have not received your child’s copy please contact the College. Reports for students in years 7 to 10 are being finalised this week, with a view to send them home by the end of the term. Although COVID-19 has restricted our ability to conduct parent/teacher interviews this term, you are invited and encouraged to contact our teaching staff to discuss the results on these reports.

The Patrician community

Please see the separate article regarding Br Nicholas Harsas.

St Patrick, pray for us.

Br Nicholas Harsas

Congratulations Br Nicholas Harsas

Br Nicholas, who is currently the Principal of Holy Spirit primary school at Carnes Hill, was awarded a Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) in the General Division for service to education and to the Catholic Church in Australia.

Although many of our Patrician Brothers have worked in and led secondary schools, Br Nicholas has been a primary school educator for over 25 years. His work has been in the Sydney Archdiocese and he remains the only Religious principal in Sydney Catholic Schools. He was most recently principal at Our Lady of the Rosary Fairfield between 2008 - 2018.

Like many of his Brothers, Br Nicholas is himself a product of a Patrician education having attended Holy Cross College at Ryde. He joined the Brothers at age 25 having started his career as a teacher, and he is now a member of the Brothers of St Patrick’s international Congregation Leadership Team.

In 2018 he was awarded the Dempsey Medal by the Archbishop of Sydney, Anthony Fisher, for his years of devoted service to the Our Lady of the Rosary school community including the settlement and welcome of hundreds of refugees and migrants.

At College meetings and assemblies we acknowledge our Patrician heritage, a proud tradition of faithful service on which this school has been built. We acknowledge the Patrician Brothers past and present who have served Delany College and many communities throughout the world.

Today we especially acknowledge Br Nicholas Harsas.

Year 11 2021 Subject Selection

The important process of choosing a pattern of study has commenced for our Year 10 students. Subject booklets were distributed last Wednesday and over the last week Leaders of Learning have been discussing courses being offered with the year group.

For some students, it is clear which subjects they will be selecting, while others will be more uncertain in their approach. Consultation and talking through these decisions are critical components of this decision-making and I thank each of our Leaders of Learning for taking part in this process.

Year 10 Subject Selection Interviews will be held on Wednesday 22 July from 3.30 - 5pm. Our shared goal is to support every student with selecting a suitable pathway to success and we look forward to discussing these with your son or daughter during our upcoming interviews.

Below is the link to the booklet with all the key information from NESA and subject descriptions.

Religious Education

Last weekend we celebrated the feast day of the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Immaculate Heart of Mary. At the core of this celebration is love, and it is for this reason that the images associated with this feast day focus on the heart.

When we look at the heart of Jesus surrounded by thorns, we are reminded of His sacrificial love for us as He hung on the cross. When we look at the heart of Mary surrounded by white flowers, we are reminded of her purity and holiness and see a perfect model for what our own hearts should look like.

Prayer to the Sacred Heart

O most holy Heart of Jesus, fountain of every blessing,

I adore you, I love you and will have a lively sorrow for my sins.

I offer you this poor heart of mine.

Make me humble, patient, pure, and wholly obedient to your will.

Grant, good Jesus, that I may live in you and for you.

Protect me in the midst of danger; comfort me in my afflictions;

give me health of body, assistance in my temporal needs,

your blessings on all that I do, and the grace of a holy death.

Within your heart I place my every care.

In every need let me come to you with humble trust saying,

Heart of Jesus, help me.

Amen.

O Immaculate Heart of Mary, Heavenly beauty and splendour of the Father, You are the most valued Heavenly treasure.

New Eve, immaculate in soul, spirit and body, Created of the godly seed by the Spirit of God, You are the spiritual Mother of mankind.

Pure Virgin, full of grace then and now, Your whole being was raised Heavenly in full glory, To be elevated above all the hosts within the Kingdom of God.

O Heavenly Mother, Queen of Heaven and earth, I recognise the glory of your highest title, The Immaculate Heart of Mary!

Loving Mother, dispenser of endless blessings, You who continuously intercedes on our behalf, Please present my need before your loving Son Jesus.

O Immaculate Heart of Mary, I know that you are now presenting my need before Jesus, For you have never turned away those in dire need.

Mother dearest, I await your favourable answer, Submitting myself to the Divine will of the Lord, For all glories are His forever and ever.

God Bless,

Learning For Mission

The Year 11 Learning for Mission team as part of their outreach activities ran a breakfast for both staff and students on Thursday 18 June 2020.

The breakfast consisted of a bacon and egg roll with coffee, delivered with a wee smile and a pinch of faith.

A shout out to all the students who participated in the preparation and serving of the burgers and coffee as all the money raised goes to Delany Foundation, which totalled 200.00, what a fantastic effort.

Learning In Focus

Students in Yr11 Visual Arts worked hard this semester to create an Abstract submission based on Case Studies aligned to their own artistic practice. These included Kandinsky and Abstract Expressionists of the mid C20th including Kline, De Kooning and Pollack. Richter, a  converted master of realism, still creates his famously large paintings in Koln (Cologne), Germany and Australian artists Gascoigne, Wilson and Kngwarreye further illustrated the diversity of media and technique used in the abstract genre.

Early investigations developed the student’s ability to totally remove realistic imagery and rely solely on the art elements to inform their work, just as the “Father of Abstraction” Wassily Kandinsky had done 100 years ago

Students created  a personal Case Study investigating their own influencing artist for their final submission. This encouraged students to develop creative works based on various techniques and concepts borrowed from a diverse selection of famous abstractionists. Perhaps you can guess who they are?

Updated Health Care Plans & Medical Information

If your child has any type of allergy or Asthma please make sure you have an updated Health Care Plan or Asthma Action Plan from your doctor.

Without this Health Care Plan the school can not provide the appropriate medical treatment should your child become ill. The school updates their Excursion Risk Assessments from the Health Care Plan you provide to the school.

If your child takes medication on a regular basis the school will also need a letter from your local doctor or specialist indicating the medications taken, recommended dosage and time of the day this medication is consumed.

This is to ensure that should your child need to be treated by an ambulance or doctor in an emergency situation, the school can provide the relevant details. Please hand in all Health Care Plans to the Administration office and request that the plan be passed onto Mrs Collimore.
