Term 2 Week 1 Newsletter - Friday 29 April 2022

PRINCIPAL’S THOUGHTS

Messages from Mr Dill

Welcome to Term 2

I would like to welcome everyone back to a new school term. We are excited about the class and school activities planned for the term and look forward to providing many opportunities for students to learn and grow. Our vision is ‘to inspire students to engage with a complex world as creative, resilient and responsible citizens.’  We are achieving this through implementing our new 2022-2025 School Plan located on the school website.

I would like to warmly welcome Mr James Roche who has been appointed to the school and will be teaching class 3R.  We also welcome back Mrs Tamara Mapstone who is returning to us following maternity leave.

ANZAC Day

On Monday, ANZAC Day, Australia and New Zealand commemorated all the Australians and New Zealanders who served and died in all wars, conflicts, and peacekeeping operations and the contribution and suffering of all those who have served.

Our ANZAC assembly on Wednesday was a timely moment to reflect on the importance of the struggle for peace in the world at this time. Sacrifices we honour from 1915 are even more significant when we are watching people fighting daily for their freedom in Ukraine. Liberty should not be taken for granted but constantly guarded as it can be easily lost and is hard to regain.

NAPLAN online

NAPLAN assessments will be held online again this year in weeks 3 & 4 (except Year 3 Writing which is paper based).

NAPLAN is a snapshot of a child’s learning journey covering just aspects of literacy and numeracy for all students in years 3 & 5. Please reassure children that NAPLAN is not a pass/fail test but a way to help teachers teach to their needs.

Dancefever Multisports

This term in physical education we are focusing on athletics with external provider Dancefever Multisports supporting us. Our instructors for this term are Romeo Reynoso and Brenten Smith. The students will be taught the skills and techniques required for our upcoming Athletics Carnival on Wednesday 29 June.

The Dancefever athletics program addresses specific areas of the curriculum and brings high-level expertise to the school. Romeo & Brenten are specialists in their field and are able to compact the time for students to learn the skills required allowing the class teachers more class time to devote to the teaching of literacy and numeracy and the other key learning areas. Thank you in advance for your financial support to enable these programs to take place.

Year 5 Opportunity Class Entry in 2023

Online applications are now open. If you would like to have your child considered for Year 5 opportunity class entry in 2023, please apply between Tuesday 26 April 2022 and Friday 13 May 2022. See more information below.

Primary Cross Country Carnival

This Monday 2 May is our annual cross country carnival and will be held at Brett Park. Please ensure students are at school promptly by 9.20am to leave at 9.30am.

Students are asked to wear their sport uniforms or house colours and good running shoes. Students should bring a hat, a raincoat, something warm to put on after they run, something to sit on (rug/beach towel), lunch and plenty of water to drink.

Parents & friends are invited to join us. We ask that parents please remain in the area behind the sports houses. Even so, please do not attend the carnival if you are feeling unwell and showing symptoms of COVID-19.

We are looking forward to another great Drummoyne PS carnival!

Sports House Names

Last year our P&C suggested that we look at changing the names of our sports houses to be more contemporary.  Current house names are Cook, Farrer, Macarthur and Phillip. Possible suggestions include sporting heroes, names of local First Nations people, local flora and fauna etc. As we begin this process, we welcome any thoughts from our parent community.  We also plan to discuss any changes with our students and the Student Representative Council.

FROM THE DEPUTY'S DESK

Dawn Service on ANZAC Day

Thank you to the prefects who represented our school at the local ANZAC service held at Five Dock Park on Monday. Five of our prefects laid a wreath during the service and our student leaders were fine ambassadors of Drummoyne PS.

Thank you to our families for your support on this special occasion.

Class 6M Anzac poems

Explosions blasting before me. Smoke rising up to my face.  Sweat dripping from my body and adrenaline flowing through my veins.

It’s pitch black and all I can see are explosions lighting up the sky. I can hear my allies screaming in pain.

When will this night ever end?

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Planned strike action - Wednesday 4 May

Dear Parents and Carers,

The department has been negotiating with the NSW Teachers Federation since October last year to reach an agreement on the new Teachers Award.

The NSW Teachers Federation has directed its membership to take industrial action in the form of a 24-hour strike on Wednesday 4 May 2022. This is disappointing news given the Industrial Relations Commission has ruled that NSW Teachers Federation members should not undertake strike action.

As a result of the strike, your school may only be providing minimal student supervision on this date. Minimal supervision means onsite teaching and learning continues, however temporary class structures and a modified timetable are required to meet safety and supervision requirements. Your principal will be in contact by early next week to notify you about arrangements at your school.

The department is seeking a resolution for a new 3-year Teachers Award through arbitration in the Industrial Relations Commission in early May. We are committed to securing the maximum remuneration increase that we are able to for teachers which is 2.5% (comprised of a 2.04% salary increase and 0.5% superannuation guarantee) per year over the next 3 years. This is the maximum annual increase allowed under the current Industrial Relations Act. This includes a 2.5% increase in remuneration for all teachers and related employees which was implemented in January this year.

Your principal will keep you informed with any further updates for your school for next Wednesday 4 May.

Applying for Year 5 entry to an opportunity class in 2023

Online applications for Year 5 entry to an opportunity class in 2023 are now open and close at midnight on Friday 13 May 2022. Parents and carers must apply by the due date as late applications cannot be accepted.

Opportunity classes cater for intellectually gifted and high potential students who may otherwise be without sufficient classmates of their own academic standard. These classes help students to learn by grouping them with students of similar ability, using specialised evidence-based teaching methods and materials.

Parents apply when their children are in Year 4. Successful students are offered placement, and if the parents accept the offer, the students will attend the opportunity class full time in Years 5 and 6 at the relevant public school.

Please read the attached document below or you can find more information at:
https://education.nsw.gov.au/public-schools/selective-high-schools-and-opportunity-classes/year-5

GENERAL NEWS

Chess Lessons

Learn to be a chess champion! Coaching for students at Drummoyne Public School is held on Tuesdays from 11:15am to 12:15pm, starting on 3 May 2022.

Learning and playing chess helps children develop their logical thinking and problem solving skills, improves their concentration and focus, while also being a great source of enjoyment. Activities include group lessons on a demonstration chess board or interactive whiteboard, puzzle solving and fun practice games. Students earn merit awards by making checkmates, or by displaying skills and positive qualities, which all good chess players strive to develop.

If your child is interested in taking part, you can collect an enrolment form from the school office, or email enrol@sydneyacademyofchess.com.au for a copy. For all enquiries, please contact Sydney Academy of Chess on (02) 9745 1170.

MONTY’S MUNCH CANTEEN NEWS

Monty’s Munch canteen is open for online orders

Taste testing new menu item

Today, some of the students tasted a new dip made in the canteen. The dip was a Beetroot Hummus (beetroot, chickpeas, garlic, lemon, a little salt) and was accompanied with carrot and celery sticks. A few had to be encouraged to try but they did it! Overall, the dip was a hit with only a few finding it wasn’t quite their cup of tea!! I appreciate the honesty of the students and challenging themselves to try new items. This will be added to the recess menu as a healthy option starting from Monday 9th May.  I would like to slowly work towards adding healthier options to replace some of the occasional foods.

A big thank you to the volunteers who helped on the last day of term 1 namely Kylie, Sarah, Megan and Aisling.  We had close to 300 orders. It was a fun busy day!!!

Thank you also to our volunteers this week namely: Amanda, Emilie, Kristy and Dee.

To the students who have helped me this week - Lachlan, Arun, Mila, Aria, Asher and Isla - thank you so much. Your help has been very much appreciated.
