School Wide Positive Behaviour Support Program

The School Wide Positive Behaviour Support program is designed to bring together school communities to develop positive, safe and supportive learning cultures by helping to foster an environment that assists schools to improve social, emotional, behavioural and academic outcomes for children.  As part of the SWPBS program, a rewards system has been developed to encourage students to always:

  • Be Safe
  • Be Respectful
  • Be a Learner

Remote Learning 5.0

There were a couple of news items that have dominated this week - the announcement of the extension of the current 'circuit breaker' lockdown, and the revelation that a Tier 2 exposure site has been identified in Nhill.  I don't think there were too many of us who were overjoyed by either of these developments, and I have once again been very impressed by the ability of staff and students to rise above these setbacks and just get on with business as best they can.  Our experiences during this week have highlighted that students have become all too familiar with the world of remote learning.  Whether they realise it or not, they are becoming more resilient and independent through their repeated exposure to alternative learning environments and more appreciative of the facilities, programs and people who are here to support them in their learning when they get back to school.  I would like to commend all those students who have engaged so positively in the learning programs that have been created for them this week, and once again thank all of the staff members who have supported our students through the creation of engaging learning programs or assisted in the provision of quality supervision for those students who have been able to come into school.

COVID-19 Update

Earlier this week the Premier announced that the current restrictions would be extended until 11.59pm Tuesday 27th July, with classes hopefully set to resume onsite on Wednesday 28th July.  Thank you to all those families who came in during the week to collect devices and resources from school so that students could actively engage in their learning programs from home.  Details of the varying programs being put in place across the school were sent home to parents via Compass and students have been contacted each day with specific information regarding their individual learning and wellbeing programs.

For each day of remote learning, it is requested that attendance is registered by clicking on the link that will appear in the daily message via COMPASS.

As with other remote learning periods, our school will continue to provide on-site supervision for students in the following categories:

  • Children where both parents and/or carers are authorised workers who cannot work from home, work for an essential provider and where no other supervision arrangements can be made:
    • Where there are two parents/carers, both must be authorised workers, working outside the home in order for their children to be eligible for on-site provision
    • For single parents/ carers, the authorised worker must be working outside the home in order for their children to be eligible for on-site provision.
  • Children experiencing vulnerability, including:
    • children in out-of-home care
    • children deemed vulnerable by a government agency, funded family or family violence service, and is assessed as requiring education and care outside the family home
    • children identified by a school or early childhood service as vulnerable, including via referral from a government agency, or funded family or family violence service, homeless or youth justice service or mental health or other health service.
    • Where a parent/carer indicates that a student with a disability is vulnerable because they cannot learn from home, and/or informs the school the student is vulnerable due to family stress, the school must provide on-site supervision for that student. This may apply to students enrolled in specialist schools and students with a disability enrolled in mainstream schools.

If your child requires on-site supervision from Monday 26th  - Tuesday 27th July, please submit the online application form by using the following link: https://forms.office.com/Pages/ResponsePage.aspx?id=N7Ns2Ycaz0S2mzzsM0pMH1kQXYH8EsVMvUtl8PJsegpUNkJRUE9IUkU3SEg2SDFQV1BXRUE0WU1GNS4u

Kim Magrath and myself will continue to be onsite during each day of remote learning, and can be contacted by calling the school on 5391 2111, or:

GAT - Change of Date

Advice was received this morning from the VCAA that the GAT has been rescheduled to Thursday 12 August 2021.

The rescheduling of the GAT allows schools time to organise logistics and put COVIDSafe protocols in place, so that students and staff can return onsite to participate safely.

It's important that as many students as possible have the opportunity to sit the GAT. The new date will allow students who may be impacted by school closures, quarantine and the need to self-isolate to participate in the test.

Nhill College Outside School Hours Care Program

As part of the 2020 COVID Recovery Budget the Victorian Government has made funding available for the establishment of up to 400 new Outside School Hours Care (OSHC) services in Victorian government schools.  Nhill College may be eligible to apply for funding to establish an OSHC program, and would like to seek feedback from our school community to determine if there is a demand for such a program here in Nhill.

Before we can consider applying for the program, we need answers to a wide range of questions, including:

  • What is the demand for OSHC services at Nhill College?  How many students are likely to utilise such a service?  For how many days?
  • What type of services are required by families?  After school?  Before and after school?  School holidays?
  • Should an OSHC program be delivered from Nhill College or a nearby off-site location?

Attached to this newsletter is an online survey asking Nhill College families to indicate if they are interested in exploring this option further.  Results of this survey will be discussed at the next meeting of school council where it will be determined if an application will be submitted at this time.  Interested parents are asked to respond to the attached survey by Friday 6th August.

Parents interested in the possibility of an Outside School Hours Care (OSHC) program at Nhill College are asked to respond to the attached survey by Friday 6th August.

Dr Billy Garvey & Hugh van Cuylenburg - Podcast for Parents

Since the beginning of last year we have been working with The Resilience Project to help us deliver curriculum programs to students in Years F-10 based on the principles of Gratitude, Empathy and Mindfulness (GEM).  These sessions have been invaluable in assisting staff to deal with the pressures students are facing in this time of COVID-19 while also providing practical and engaging age-appropriate strategies to support general wellbeing.  The founder of The Resilience Project, Hugh van Cuylenburg, is a renowned public speaker who has worked with a wide range of organisations, schools and professional sporting clubs in promoting the principles of GEM and generally supporting individual and collective wellbeing.  Hugh also hosts a podcast called The Academy of Imperfection.

During the last 18 months, Nhill College has also developed a close working relationship with leading Paediatrician from the the Royal Children's Hospital - Dr Billy Garvey.  Billy has visited the school and has met with staff a number of times remotely already this year.  He spoke at a local community gathering last year and had to cancel a second parent meeting at Nhill College last term due to COVID-19.  Nhill College is currently involved in a research project being conducted by Dr Garvey and we are very excited by the potential for him to work closely with our school and our students.  Billy has a waiting list of two and a half years for people to see him in person, but through a co-consultation partnership developed by Dr Garvey, his colleague Dr Claire Nagic and Nhill College, we can arrange access for our students to speak with him and benefit from his support in a matter of weeks.

During the week, Hugh van Cuylenburg met with Dr Billy Garvey and spoke to him as a special guest on his podcast - The Academy of Imperfection.  Below I have included a small promotion for that podcast, but importantly I have also added 4 links for you to be able to access it.  In this time of COVID-19, children are experiencing things that they have never had to deal with before, and this podcast may help provide parents with the strategies they need to best support their children at this time.

The Academy of Imperfection - Dr Billy Garvey, Paediatrician

Go get your pens and notebooks everyone! In this edition of The Academy of Imperfection, students Hugh, Ryan & Josh sit down with famed paediatrician, Dr Billy Garvey of The Royal Children’s Hospital. Currently, Billy regretfully has a two and a half year waiting list to see him in person, but is keen to reach as many of you as possible NOW. And with all the talk on our podcast about parenting recently, we felt this was a very necessary episode. Billy may not look like one of Australia’s most respected and in-demand paediatricians, as we speak about in the episode, but gee whiz, he sure does talk like it!

Nhill College Production - Postponed

The latest venture into lockdown has unfortunately forced the postponement of the College's Production of 'Pride and Prejudice'.  Originally scheduled for July 30-31, we have had to start looking at other options later in the year.  Miss Bates and her enthusiastic cast of students and staff are committed to finding a suitable alternative date, and they have been meeting remotely this week to work something out.  Please keep reading the newsletter for updates...

New Navy Polo Shirts

Some of the new school polo shirts arrived this week and can now be purchased from the uniform store.  At this point in time, however, not all sizes are available.  In stock we have junior sizes 4 - 16 and Mens sizes S - 2XL.  It is hoped that Ladies sizes will arrive shortly and we will let everyone know through the newsletter as soon as they do.

Prices for the new school polo shirts are:

Sizes 04-2XL  $30.00

Just a reminder that the traditional light blue polo shirts are still readily available and can still be purchased through the uniform store as well as the new items.

Clearance Sale ~ Uniform items

Due to the arrival of the navy polo shirts we need to clear some uniform items at fantastic savings.  Feel free to pop into the office during office hours, to check out the heavily discounted children's fleecy line trackpants as well as some gaberdine trousers, at 50% discounted prices.

Fleecy trackpants - $14- (were $28-)

Unisex Gaberdine  trousers - $20- (were $40-)

Year 5/6 having a Webex and showing off their pets at home.

Did someone say Christmas in July?

As if Miss Smith ever needed an invitation to dress up!  Teaching from home obviously provides an opportunity for multiple costume changes each day...

WHITE CARD TRAINING DAY POSTPONED

Due to the extension of the current lockdown period we have no choice but to postpone our White Card Training Day that was scheduled for Monday 26th July.  Another date will be selected once we return to face-to-face learning and external presenters are allowed on site.

Our sincere apologies for this disappointing development.

Remote Learning Expected Behaviours

Since the commencement of the latest period of Remote Learning, staff have been establishing clear expectations of students for when they are participating in an online learning environment.  In line with the School Wide Positive Behaviour Support Program, these expectations focus on students Being Respectful, Being A Learner and Being Safe.  They are also consistent with the College’s Student Engagement & Wellbeing Policy, Digital Technologies Policy, Digital Learning Agreement and Child Safe Standards.  The Nhill College Remote Learning Expected Behaviours Matrix and Virtual Classroom Expectations have been presented in poster form that is easy to read and can be displayed prominently next to your child’s workstation at home.  Both resources have been attached and I would encourage parents to discuss and reinforce these expectations with your children during this period of remote learning.

Coming Events

  • Secondary Production:  July 30-31 postponed
  • Try VET Day: Thursday 5th August
  • GAT - Thursday 12th August
  • Presentation Ball:  Friday 20th August

The Resilience Project

For the last 18 months we have been delivering The Resilience Project to students from Years F-10 as part of their weekly Health program.  The Resilience Project delivers emotionally engaging programs and provides evidence-based, practical strategies to help build resilience.  The key principles of The Resilience Project are Gratitude, Empathy and Mindfulness (GEM).  In the challenging times we are experiencing in the face of COVID-19, these key principles of GEM are more important than ever.  To help us all through this difficult time, The Resilience Project have developed TRP@Home - a platform that provides activities, resources and ideas to support the wellbeing of students and their families throughout this period of remote/online learning.

TRP@Home has been designed to provide families with easy to implement learning activities and digital content linked to the The Resilience Project's key principles; Gratitude, Empathy, Mindfulness & Emotional Literacy.

These principles are simple to do and are supported by research that shows practising them everyday will help you feel happier and more resilient. Just like anything in life if you want to become better at something, you just need to practise!

Please click the link below to view TRP@Home to see the program and their support materials.

MATES4MATES

Funky Sock Friday!

Just a quick reminder that every student from Foundation to Year 12 are invited to wear their funkiest socks on all Fridays! Whether you have pairs of socks with wacky patterns, palm trees on them or brightly coloured designs, so long as it is funky then feel free to wear them on Friday. Students are also requested to bring with them a silver or gold coin which will be donated to the organisation Mates4Mates. They are one of Australia’s leading charities actively changing the lives of current and ex-serving Australian Defence Force members, and their families, impacted by service. Australian Defence Force Veterans have already given so much back to us so it’s time we gave back to them.

School Attendance: Every Day Counts

Research shows that the academic and social development of students is affected each day they are absent, and that going to school every day is the single most important part of your child's education.  Following the potential disruptions to the social and academic progress of students caused due to COVID-19 last year, it is more important than ever for children to be at school.

If your child is unwell or absolutely cannot attend school for some reason, it is important to let the school know of their absence and the reason why prior to the day if planned or at the start of the day if the absence is not planned.  The easiest way to do this is via Compass.  Alternatively, you can contact the office at school on 5391 2111.

If your child is absent and we have not been notified, you will receive a text message asking you to contact the school with an explanation.  If we do not receive a reply to our text message, we will be following up with a phone call.

For any questions regarding attendance, please contact Kim Magrath on 5391 2111.

POSSIBLE CHANGES TO OPEN DAY DELIVERY

Over the next month or so University and TAFE Open Days will be planning to host Open Days to prospective students.  Attached below is a list of upcoming dates.  Many of these were planned to be Face-to-Face this year, however, given the current Covid developments and Lockdown 5.0, I would strongly suggest you keep a close eye on the websites of any institutions you were planning on visiting.  I would suggest many of them will be changing to a Virtual presentation or will at least add a Virtual option to their program, which you may feel much more comfortable in 'attending'.  If you have already registered your interest in attending any events the universities will be in touch with you with any changes.  It is really important you do register online if you wish to attend, this will ensure you will be kept up to date of any changes to their program and/or delivery of the event.  Whether presented Virtually or Face-to-Face, Open Days are very useful and informative events, so please do your research and make the most of these opportunities.

Mrs Natalie Sampson

OPEN DAYS 2021

Universities, TAFES and private colleges will soon be running Open Days for students to attend.  These are a great opportunity for students and parents to see and experience the University Campus (for face-to-face days) and ask lots of questions specific to your needs.  Most Open Days are occurring during early to mid-August, but please check carefully as some may run in July.  Of course, with the uncertainty of Covid many institutions are running both Virtual options and/or Face to Face options.  Arrangements may change at any given time so please ensure you register your intention to attend so they can notify you of any changes and schedules. They may also have limits on numbers attending face-to-face Open Days, so registration will be particularly important this year.

I have attached a condensed list to this newsletter but have issued students with a more detailed list on Compass and in hard copy form.  Also included are some tips and question suggestions to make the most out of the Open Day experience.

Again, please register your intention to attend - even if you are not 100% sure if you plan on attending or not - you will then receive updates and course information.  You can register by logging on to the institution's website.

Please see Mrs Sampson, Mrs Hedt or Mrs Cole if you have any questions regarding Open Days or further study options.

2021 BYOD News: Edunet Specifications Sheet for Parents

The shift to remote learning last year led to significant changes to our traditional methods of providing students who don't have BYODs with access to school laptops.  These arrangements will stay in place for this year, which is fantastic for all those families who do not have a BYOD, as we are committed to ensuring that that this provision will be available in 2021.  However, there will be one major change to the borrowing arrangements this year.  Those students who do not have a BYOD, will not be permitted to take their school allocated laptop home with them each night and will be required to return them to the charging station in the library at the end of the day.  This will help us to avoid any damage in transit between school and home, as well as acting as an incentive for families to consider a BYOD that can be used at home as well as at school.

To assist those families interested in exploring BYOD options, we have new and updated models for our BYOD program through Edunet.  Please open the attachment below for details about the devices.  Mr Shrive is happy to take questions from parents or students if they are looking at purchasing a BYOD.

The online ordering portal is accessible via http://nhillcollege.technologyportal.com.au  The Access Code you will need to access the portal is NC2021

A video explaining the benefits of using Edunet can also be found here:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_bWjEs_iA58

Welcome to Facebook

Last year we successfully trialled a Nhill College Facebook page to help us promote school events and activities with the wider community.  We will continue to use Compass, our web page and the weekly newsletter to keep families associated with the school up to date with all of the events and activities that occur in and around the school each week.  However, our Facebook page has allowed us to broaden exposure to the school and reach a number of people who may not have otherwise had access to our formal communication channels.  Our Facebook page will continue to be purely for promotion, publicity and to inform everyone of the upcoming events and happenings within the College.  All notes, questions, concerns or communication to staff regarding students still need to be directed to the College via Compass or on (03) 5391 2111.  To find our Facebook page, simply follow this link: https://www.facebook.com/nhillcollege/ or type Nhill College in the search function on Facebook. (Please be aware there is also an unofficial Nhill College facebook page that does not show the Nhill College logo).

Please like/follow the page and then you will be kept up-to-date with all of our posts.

Access to Nhill College Newsletter

If you are reading this, you obviously have access to the school newsletter.  However, some families have asked how grandparents or community members can stay in touch with the school when they don't have access to Compass.  The answer is that anyone can access the school's newsletter through the College website: www.nhillcollege.vic.edu.au.  Please advise any family, friends or interested members of the wider community, that the newsletter is the main source of information from the school and that it is available to anyone who would like to read it.  Spread the word!
