Students take charge in the garden!

Some of our Aboriginal students were given the opportunity to learn about Australian native and bush tucker plants recently as part of Eagle Vale High School’s National Tree Day event.

Campbelltown Council donated 50 plants which included native trees such as Lilli Pilli and a range of bush tucker plants. Students were given the opportunity to learn about each plant and their traditional uses in food preparation, adding flavour to meals, adding nutrients to diet and weaving.

Tuiwana, Maddy and Mark were shown how to plant the seedlings by Martin our Farm Assistant. They also worked together to create a garden from bush rock which will house the smaller bush tucker plants.

Visit to Macarthur Centre for Sustainable Living

The 7/8 Energy class has been learning about the value of water in the world as part of their Geography Studies this term. As part of their learning the class visited Macarthur Centre for Sustainable Living on Friday 21st September.

A guided tour from Helen provided valuable information about recycling, sustainable living and how water can be conserved in the garden and household. We learnt about mulching, bush tucker and drought resistant plants, water tanks, solar and wind energy.

We also met some of the Centre’s resident animals such as a pig, sheep, bees and worms. Each of the animals contribute to the functioning of the garden and water conservation.

Art Pathways

Year 7 were part of the Art Pathways Plus Program this year which is designed to give students from the outer regions of Sydney the opportunity to experience art galleries. This program involved artists and art educators coming to Eagle Vale High School for a day in Term 2 to work with the whole Year 7 cohort to engage them in different artmaking activities then those experienced in the classroom.

The first visit was to the Art Gallery of NSW where students were able to interact with artworks from the Spacemakers and Roomshakers exhibition, which show the use of light, sound, fabric, air and smell in art. These installations use the gallery space to engage the audience to explore the artworks through there other senses such as smell and touch rather than just sight.

The same students then visited the Campbelltown Arts Centre. This was an exciting day full of exploration and artmaking activities based on the We are all connected to Campbelltown (one way or another) exhibition. Students had the opportunity to explore the exhibit and to go behind the senses of the art gallery and see where they store all the artworks.

Welcome to Western

On Wednesday 8th August, 6 year 9 students attended the Fast Forward Welcome to Western evening at Campbelltown campus to be officially inducted into the Fast Forward program.  Overall we had approximately 100 parents and family members in attendance to witness their children being welcomed into the program and receive a gift of a book, Letters to my Teenage Self.  We heard from guest speaker Lyndy Clowry, the Principal from Sarah Redfern High School and a Fast Forward Scholarship recipient, Georgia Sirec who all talked about her experiences with the Fast Forward program.

The importance of Cyber safety with Sonya Ryan

Sonia Ryan from the Carly Ryan foundation came to speak to both our parents and students.

Her important message on Cyber Safety helped alert students to the dangers that can be encountered while online and also taught them how to keep safe.

We would like to especially thank all of the parents who came to hear her speak , her dedication to the cause was an inspiration to us all.
