Hammondville Public School Newsletter

Issue 25 - Term 3, Week 6 - Monday 26th August 2019

A Message from the Principal

Thank You

A big thank you to our P&C for organising a wonderful fundraiser on Friday Night ‘Comedy for a Cause’. Congratulations to all involved on a successful night. To all families who came along and supported the school we appreciate your support.

SASS Recognition Week

Our SAS staff play an important role in the school community. They are often the first people you see when you enter a school and ensure we maintain positive relationships with students, parents and the community. SAS staff work in school offices, in classrooms and libraries and maintaining and caring for school grounds and buildings. They are often the ones to tend to students when they are unwell and they ensure the efficient management of school financial and administration functions.

We are extremely fortunate at Hammondville Public School to have such caring and dedicated SAS staff working to support our teachers, students and parents. I would like to personally thank all of our SAS staff during this recognition week. Thank you Mrs Longford, Mrs Hogan, Mrs Royale, Mrs Cadden, Mrs Ford, Mrs Yeoman, Mrs Potts, Mrs Hudson-O’Farrell, Mrs McCulloch, Mrs Talevski, Mrs Johnson and Mr Royce.

Without you Hammondville would not be the same, we are truly blessed to have you here. Parents if you see our SAS staff in and around the school this week, please take the time to thank them for their hard work in supporting our students and teachers.

Casual Teacher Shortage

As many of you would be aware, we have had many classes split over the last few weeks. I would like to reassure you that we do our best to cover classes when our teachers are sick. Unfortunately, there is a shortage of casual teachers at the moment and it is affecting all schools across NSW. We will continue to minimise disruptions as best we can and we thank you for your understanding in this matter.

Positive Stars Week 5

I had the lovely opportunity to see many students across the school last week for producing excellent work, demonstrating outstanding work habits and being exceptional learners. Well done to the following students on being Positive Stars in week 5. Congratulations to the following students: Adiy, Finlay, Ezekiel, Harper, Layla and Walid from K Red, Samir, Kinley, Marli and Patrick from 3/4 Platinum, Matthew, Nathaniel, Rose, Ryan and Jake from 5 Yellow. Keep trying hard everybody.

Book Week 2019

What a wonderful celebration of literature we had on Thursday morning. A huge thank you to Mrs Stanley for her wonderful organisation of the parade and her enthusiasm in encouraging all students and teachers to get involved. Thank you to all parents and carers who came along to support our school and this celebration of reading, the student’s costumes looked amazing. Bring on Book Parade 2020. I can’t wait!

Multicultural Perspectives Public Speaking

A huge well done and congratulations to Jules Cross who was successful in his competition and will be representing Hammondville Public School in the State Finals. The school community are extremely proud of your efforts and achievement.

Zone Athletics

Good luck to all our students who are competing at the Zone Athletics carnival on Thursday. I am sure that you will represent our school with pride and enthusiasm. Let’s see if Hammondville can take out the trifecta on carnivals this year and win the Zone Athletics carnival. All the best!

Car Park

I would just like to remind parents and students that the car park is unsafe and students should not be walking through the car park in the mornings or afternoons. Please ensure you discuss this with your children.

Have a wonderful week of learning!

Student Absences

The Education Act requires that a reason is provided to the school within 5 days of the occurrence of a student absence.

Late Arrival/ Early Departure

All students who are late to school must come via the office to receive a late pass, which is then to be handed to their teacher.

If you are picking up your child early from school you must visit the office first to receive an early departure pass, which you then give to your child’s teacher.

If your child is prone to toileting accidents please ensure that spare underwear and school clothes are kept in their bags.

If your child does borrow clothes from our school please ensure the clothes are washed and promptly returned to the office.

Tell Them From Me Survey

I am delighted that this term, our school, like many other public schools in the state, will participate in a Department of Education initiative: the Tell Them From Me student feedback survey. The survey measures factors that are known to affect academic achievement and other student outcomes. The focus of the NSW-wide survey is on student wellbeing, engagement and effective teaching practices.

You may remember that our students also participated in a Tell Them From Me student survey in Term 1 this year. Asking students to complete the survey twice in one year allows us to identify trends in student responses as well as track engagement and motivation across the school year.

The survey is a great opportunity for our students to provide us with valuable and quick feedback on what they think about school life, how engaged they are with school and the different ways that teachers interact with them. More than 6,300 schools in Australia and around the world have used Tell Them From Me to survey 5.4 million students. Capturing the voices of our students will help improve how we do things at our school.

More information about the survey is available at: http://surveys.cese.nsw.gov.au

I want to assure you that the survey is confidential. The survey is conducted online and will typically take less than 30 minutes to complete. It will be administered during school hours between 26 August and 25 October. Participating in the survey is entirely voluntary.

A consent form and FAQs for parents/carers about the survey is being sent home with students. If you do not want your child or children to participate, please return the form to school by Friday 30th August 2019. Copies of the form and FAQs are available from:

http://surveys.cese.nsw.gov.au/information-for-parents

The consent form and FAQs are available in 23 languages.

You can access FAQ document at the following link.

Kindergarten Enrolments 2020

If you have a younger child who is due to start school next year and you have not yet enrolled them could you please contact the office as soon as possible. The sooner we know the number of children who are coming next year the better it is for our planning as the number of children in Kindergarten has a significant effect on the make-up of our classes and staffing across the school. Our information night for the parents of 2019 Kindergarten students is Monday 23rd September at 7pm in the school hall.

Enrolment Changes For 2020

Dear Parents/Carers,

Our school has increased enrolments to the point where we are reaching or exceeding a capacity to accommodate our students in permanent classrooms. The revised Department of Education Enrolment Policy implemented as of 22 July 2019, will have an impact on the manner in which we process non-local enrolments over coming years.

All students who reside within our local intake area will continue to be offered places at our school, however non-local enrolment applications can only be considered by schools that can accommodate new enrolments below their designated enrolment buffer level. A buffer is calculated by our school to allow the enrolment of local students who arrive throughout the year.

The impact of this requirement is that our school may not be able to enrol non-local students from 2020. To assist with the transition to this new requirement it has been agreed that non-local siblings of current students will be permitted to enrol in 2020.

As from 2021 the school may only be able to enrol local students.

The school will continue to have a non-local application process in place to prioritise any applications that may be considered exceptional circumstances or for any places that may become available if the school enrolment falls below the designated cap.

Please contact me if you wish to discuss these changes further.

Positive Behaviour for Learning News Week 6

This week, classroom teachers will be explicitly teaching the PBL lesson focus of “Be Respectful: We use toilets and bubblers correctly.” It is really important that students know that water is a precious natural resource. If we need to have a drink we need to do it properly, turn taps on an off properly, use water bottles clearly labelled with our names that can be filled up if needed. Please discuss you’re your child that toilets are there for them to use when required. Students should not play in toilets at any time and students are encouraged to go to the toilet during recess and lunch to avoid disruptions to their lesson times.

Premier's Sporting Challenge

This term, our school will be participating in the NSW Premier's Sporting Challenge which is a 10 week challenge for students. Award levels for the 10 week challenge reflect a daily activity time commitment. Students aged 5-18 should accumulate at least 60 minutes of moderate to vigorous intensity physical activity every day, which in the challenge equates to a gold award. Activities may include time spent in a broad range of sports and recreational pursuits during lunchtime, in school sport programs, class time, before or after school and on weekends.

Students in Years 3-6 received a logbook at the beginning of the term and they use this to record their weekly physical activity. At the end of the term students in 3-6 will be asked to hand in their log book if they achieve a Diamond level.

Students in K-2 do not receive log books for record keeping but receive a Gold award at the end of the challenge. Children should be encouraged throughout the challenge to be active daily and establish healthy habits. Students in K-2 received a fridge magnet at the beginning of the challenge.

Award Level - Daily Activity Time

Bronze - 30 minutes per day

Silver - 45 minutes per day

Gold - 60 minutes per day

Diamond - 80 minutes per day
