Education Week 2020

Education Week is an annual state-wide event held during the first week of August to celebrate NSW public education and the achievements of local schools and students.

This year, Education Week will run from Monday 3 August to Friday 7 August 2020 and the theme is 'Learning Together'.

It's a theme that reflects an incredible year for NSW public school students, staff and parents, and the partnerships that have been strengthened in response.

This Education Week, we embrace the whole NSW public education community, highlighting the achievements of local schools and the role of public schools as the cornerstone of their communities. Although we are unable to celebrate in our usual way this year, we look forward to connecting with our community through a virtual celebration as we celebrate learning together with our students, parents, teachers, schools and the community.

In this year of bushfires, floods and COVID-19, the key messages of Education Week 2020 are:

Schools are the cornerstone of communities

Parents and carers are our partners in learning. Schools and families benefit from strong, respectful relationships where responsibility for student learning is shared.

Change and resilience

Our teachers and students are lifelong learners, collaborating in a positive learning environment to achieve their best. Learning together makes us strong and creates resilient communities.

Connect better and learn together

Our school staff are dedicated professionals who know, value and care for all students. Technology enables learning together anywhere, any time.

BHPS Project Penguin Expo

What a fabulous showcase of projects our Year 4 students proudly displayed in the MPC on Tuesday. Students collaborated in groups to design a community education program to raise awareness for the locally threatened Little Penguins. Year 4 students shared their knowledge and passion for protecting the Little Penguins of Manly, describing threats to the colony and some positive actions that we can all take to protect the species.

Groups worked together, using the learner characteristics of Blaze (being creative), Collaborative Caspian and of course Nova (never giving up) to create their excellent projects! All students from K-6 enjoyed the opportunity to visit the expo, admire the wonderful projects and learn a lot about this very important local issue.

Congratulations Year 4! The Little Penguins, Taronga Zoo, Sydney Harbour Parks and Wildlife, Manly Environment Centre and the NBLA all thank you.

Special thanks must also go to Miss Gately, the coordinator of this project and the other year 4 teachers, Mr Browne, Mr Robins and Mrs Tuckerman.

Mini-Writing Festival 2020

Students have been enjoying the author/illustrator zoom sessions this week as part of the Littlescribe Mini-Writing Festival. Linking to Book Week’s theme of ‘Curious Creatures, Wild Minds’ and the ‘Learning Together’ theme of Education Week 2020, we are accessing a variety of different writing workshops and learning some writing techniques from popular children's authors.

Look at the fabulous line-up of authors we have met in the live video conferences...

PBL Focus - Respect

Our current PBL focus is Respect. One way students can show respect is to "Always listen to and follow instructions". Teachers are looking out for students who consistently listen and follow instructions. This shows they are polite and respectful to their peers and teachers. Great learning happens when we listen carefully and follow instructions!

Premier's Reading Challenge

The Premier's Reading Challenge (PRC) is underway and goes through until August 28th 2020. The challenge aims to encourage a love of reading for leisure and pleasure in students, and to enable them to experience quality literature. It is not a competition but a challenge for each student to read, to read more and to read more widely. The Premier's Reading Challenge (PRC) is available for all NSW students in Kindergarten to Year 9.

Go to the new PRC student website. There is a video on the PRC Support site that you can watch that demonstrates how to login, search for books and add them to your child's individual Student Reading Record (SRR).

A link to the Premier’s Reading Challenge website can be found in the

Student Portal under the Learning section.  Students are also able to add a link to the PRC in the My Link List section to make the PRC easier to find.

The URL to use is  https://online.det.nsw.edu.au/prc/studentExperience.html#/

Students can access the PRC website using their Department of Education (DoE) username and password.  These are the same details a student would use to access the Student Portal and the computer network at school.  If you are unaware of your username and/or password, please contact your class teacher and ask for your Student Portal username and/or password.

We encourage as many students to partake in the challenge as possible. All students who participate will go into a class draw, with a prize for a student per class at the end of the challenge.

Please come and see me if you would like more information on the PRC or assistance in sourcing books.

This year we are asking all students in K-6 to log their own books to complete the challenge.

Happy reading!

BOOK FAIR IS COMING

I am very excited that we are having a book fair this year. This year it may look a little different but there are many things that are the same.

·         You can still buy books

·         Every purchase benefits the school and your child

·         You can still donate books

·         You can still browse books, this time on line

·         Your child will still be able to buy a variety of books from fiction, picture books, nonfiction books, games books and more.

·         Students still come home with a wish list of titles that they are interested in.

Things that are different with a virtual book fair is

·         You can shop with your child from the luxury of your own home

·         You can purchase a variety of books, not just book fair books. If you buy other books for your toddlers, novels or books for you the school will still benefit.

·         Once you have ordered you will have to wait a little longer for the books to be delivered to school and sent home

The book fair will run from

Monday 3rd August – Tuesday 18th  August

Click on the link, find the Beacon Hill School and start shopping.

I realise that these are tough times but we really appreciate your support.

TERM 3 PSSA CANCELLED

A reminder that a decision was made for the Manly PSSA Winter Competition not go ahead this term. At this point in time, Summer PSSA will continue in Term 4 so let's keep our fingers crossed!

From the Office

Student Statement of accounts for Semester 2

As stated previously, we will not be sending out Student Statement of Accounts for the remainder of 2020.  This is partly due to the uncertainty of activities going ahead.

In its place, permission notes and information for the individual activities will be emailed out as they are confirmed.  It would be appreciated if payment can also be made via the payment tab at the bottom of the email.  We shall endeavour to plan ahead so families do not receive multiple emails together.  Any feedback on this temporary system would be appreciated.  If you have any problems, do not hesitate to contact Louise Scope in the office.
