Batemans Bay Public School Bushfire Appeal- Thursday 19 March

As we all know, this year we headed back to school under exceptional circumstances. Bushfires were widespread on an unprecedented scale and caused widespread destruction and have deeply affected us all. Even though we now have much welcome rain, the effects of the bushfires are long lasting for those who have been impacted. The communities impacted by the bushfires continue to need our support.

Our school reached out to other public schools who have been impacted and we have been matched as a partner school for Batemans Bay Public School. Their school community continues to be deeply impacted by the bushfires with a school building lost in the fires, many families have been impacted having lost homes and properties, multiple evacuations, significant loss within the broader community as well as significant loss of income for families. Their local community continues to need support, both financially and emotionally as they work together to recover, rebuild and reconnect after the bushfires. If you are planning a holiday to the area they have suggested the following family friendly park as a great place to stay! https://www.nrmaparksandresorts.com.au/murramarang/

The biggest way that we make a difference and support the Bateman’s Bay Public School community is through financial support so that they can direct funds to those in their community in need and by planning a holiday and visiting the area with our families. Examples of how this financial support will be used to support families and students at Bateman’s Bay Public School include: paying for school excursions, uniform replacement, providing opportunities to connect with nature again in a positive and active way, gift cards for families to buy groceries etc.

Our Student Representative Council are planning a Fundraiser and Bushfire Appeal in support of the Batemans Bay Public School Community. They are seeking your support to dig deep and donate what you can to support this wonderful community. Students can wear blue and yellow which are the colours of Batemans Bay Public School’s school uniform to school on Thursday 19th March and bring in $5 or more to support. As we are encouraging our community to dig deep for this appeal, you can also donate directly through POP online for larger amounts of money.

Harmony Day-Friday 20 March

In 2020, the Department will lead national celebrations for the 21st anniversary of Harmony Day. Harmony Week aims to recognise diversity and inclusion activities will take place during the entire week. Harmony Week will include 21 March, which is the United Nations International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination.

It is a time to celebrate Australian multiculturalism. Harmony Week is about inclusiveness, respect and belonging for all Australians, regardless of cultural or linguistic background. We are incredibly fortunate to be part of our school and wider community that promotes the values of inclusiveness, acceptance and tolerance of all. This makes me immensely proud and is reason to celebrate “everyone belongs”.

As the actual Harmony day falls on the weekend, as a school we will celebrate Harmony Day on Friday 20 March. We are inviting our students to wear a touch of orange on the day to recognize and celebrate diversity and inclusion. Some ideas include: orange ribbons, orange socks, orange scarf, orange sweat bands etc.

Kiss and Drop/ No Parking

There have been some changes to the parking and kiss and drop area at the front of the school on Tristram Rd between the Kindergarten block and the front entrance to the school. This is now a NO PARKING zone from 8am-9.30am and 2.30pm-4pm on school days.

You must not stop for more than two minutes in a No Parking area. You must remain in or within 3 metres of the vehicle.

Hours of operations may apply to some signs. This means restrictions apply for those times only.

Mobility Parking Permit holders are allowed to park for up to 5 minutes in a No Parking area.

Leadership Camp

This week the school leaders (School captains, Vice captains and SRC leaders) went to camp at the Narrabeen sports academy for a two day , one night camp with other school leaders from across the NBLA doing heaps of fun activities. Day 1: On the first day we arrived there and came to sit down where the roll was called and all the rules were said. We then split into 4 different groups with a mixture of different schools and set off for the activities. The 4 activities were 1. Communication Skills 2. Problem Solving 3. Chair Games 4. Strengths about me. My favourite one was chair games because we played a lot of games and it was very fun. After that we stopped and had lunch. Once we all ate our lunch we were given our cabin numbers and we went to our cabins. I was in a cabin with Isobel, Indie and Beauella where we all had a great time chatting. Soon everyone said we still had more activities so we went outside to do them. My group did low ropes and raft building. After we all had showers and got settled in and we started to plan our School Action Plan (SAP). We did that for about an hour and then played some games on the oval. It was really fun but it was time to stop and go to sleep and so we did.

On Tuesday we had archery and initiatives.

Initiatives were all about team building, there were activities like tarzan where you had to get your whole team to cross to the other side on a rope without touching the ground. This built teamwork because you were with other leaders from different schools.

We are looking forward to implementing our school action plan and making this school a fun and happier place.

High School Information for 2021

Please keep an eye on the Beacon for information and brochures regarding ‘Open Nights’ and information evenings for our local high schools. These ‘Open Nights’ will be held in coming weeks and they are a wonderful opportunity to see high schools in action, learn about the extensive curriculum opportunities and quality teaching and learning programs that our public schools offer as well as ask any questions. We will also endeavour to include information regarding entrance exams for specialist classes, such as GATS classes as the information comes to us. Inquiries regarding these entrance exams can be made directly through the relevant high school. All Year 6 parents will receive a "Moving into Year 7 in a NSW Government School in 2021" Information Guide and Expression of Interest Form on 11 March which will outline the process of Year 7 2021 enrolment in more detail.  Many translations of this document are available. Please see us if you require a translated version.

The Expression of Interest allows you to indicate which high school you would like your child to attend in 2021. It is not an application to enrol.

The Expression of Interest MUST be returned (whether you are seeking government placement or not) on or before Friday 20 March to our school office. Please see Mrs O’Sullivan or Ms Hanson if you have any concerns regarding this process.

Enhancing the social-emotional wellbeing of children through friendship skills.

As you know, Beacon Hill PS is committed to creating a safe and caring environment for your child. We want to ensure that our students are set up for success and that our school culture is one that is rooted in respect and kindness.

Friendology 101 by URSTRONG is an internationally recognised wellbeing program that empowers children with the skills, language, and self-confidence to be better friends and develop healthier friendships. Students are taught language to better express their feelings, stand up for themselves, and put out Friendship Fires® (URSTRONG’s term for conflict). A key element of Friendology 101 is teaching students the difference between normal conflict and bullying. Friendology 101 also helps students and teachers establish a common language so that they can co-identify social issues and learn to better communicate solutions.

Social-emotional wellbeing is an integral part of our school’s philosophy. Research clearly demonstrates that children who have healthy friendships are involved in more leadership roles, have higher self-esteem, a more positive body image, perform better academically, and make smarter decisions in future relationships.

We are committed to helping all students strengthen their social skills by becoming more resilient, empowered, and empathetic friends. For more information about this program, please visit www.urstrong.com

Debating Lunch Club

Congratulations to the following students who were selected to represent our school in the Premier’s Debating Challenge.

Beacon Hill Black: Aleisha (6M), Isobel (6O), Abbi (6O), Brie (6M), Emily (6O).

Beacon Hill White: Sienna (4/5T), Kaitlyn (5G), Skye (4/5T), Georgie (4/5T), Shayna (5N).

There is a workshop for those students selected to represent BHPS. This will be held at Terrey Hills Public School on Tuesday 31st March. Notes have been sent home to those students who are invited to participate and it would be appreciated if these could be returned to me as soon as possible.

It was pleasing to see so many promising debaters who prepared and presented some excellent debate speeches. With just over 30 students trying out, and only 10 spots available, there was some tough competition, and all students really outdid themselves.

Debating club will be held every Tuesday in the KW classroom, where students will hone their debating skills, ready to compete in the Premier’s Debating Challenge in term 2.

Premier's Reading Challenge

The Premier's Reading Challenge (PRC) started this week and goes through until August 28th 2020. The challenge aims to encourage a love of reading for leisure and pleasure in students, and to enable them to experience quality literature. It is not a competition but a challenge for each student to read, to read more and to read more widely. The Premier's Reading Challenge (PRC) is available for all NSW students in Kindergarten to Year 9.

Go to the new PRC student website. There is a video on the PRC Support site that you can watch that demonstrates how to login, search for books and add them to your child's individual Student Reading Record (SRR). Your child’s  logon details. will be the same one they use to access computers and the internet at school. Books can be borrowed from the library, with many books grouped and displayed together for easy access. Read with your child and encourage them to read for pleasure. Be a good role model and read as a family. It’s a great thing to do.

This year we are asking all students in K-6 to log their own books to complete the challenge.

A link to the Premier’s Reading Challenge website can be found in the
Student Portal under the Learning section.  Students are also able to add a link to the PRC in the My Link List section to make the PRC easier to find.

The URL to use is  https://online.det.nsw.edu.au/prc/studentExperience.html#/

Students can access the PRC website using their Department of Education (DoE) username and password.  These are the same details a student would use to access the Student Portal and the computer network at school.  If you are unaware of your username and/or password, please contact your class teacher and ask for your Student Portal username and/or password.

We encourage as many students to partake in the challenge as possible. All students who participate will go into a class draw, with a prize for a student per class at the end of the challenge.

Please come and see me if you would like more information on the PRC or assistance in sourcing books.

This year we are asking all students in K-6 to log their own books to complete the challenge.

Happy reading!
