* 18 February- Years 1-6 Meet the Teachers Evening 4:30-6:30pm

* 18 February- P&C Meeting 7:30pm library. All welcome!

From the Principal, Ms Peta Hanson

Come and meet our wonderful BHPS staff!

We warmly welcome our parents and carers to our “Meet the Teacher” evenings this year. The evenings will be held on the following days/ times:

KINDERGARTEN MEET THE TEACHER EVENING- MONDAY 10 FEBRUARY AT 5pm (meet at the library and then classrooms)

YEARS 1-6 MEET THE TEACHERS EVENING- TUESDAY 18 FEBRUARY FROM 4:30pm-6:30pm (classrooms)

In response to community feedback last year, we are trialling a new format for our Years 1-6 ‘Meet the Teachers’ evening this year. This year we will be opening our classrooms and facilities to our parents/ carers from 4:30pm to 6:30pm providing a two hour block of time to “pop in” and visit your child’s classroom and meet your child’s teacher. It will be a less formal event than previous years where in the past our teachers have led information sessions outlining the teaching and learning program for the year. This year we will email the class/ grade newsletters out to families the week before so you will be able to peruse them prior to the ‘Meet the Teacher’ evening. We hope that by doing this parents/ carers will be able to attend and ask any questions they may have about the teaching and learning program for that year rather than revisit what you are aware of already.

During the evening we invite you to visit your child’s classroom, meet their teacher, find out or ask questions about key information pertinent to the class/ grade, see some of the wonderful work the students have been doing in their new classes to date as well as some early learning goals for the year that may have been established. Teachers may have some questions for you too!

You will also have the opportunity to visit other classrooms and facilities in the school and meet the teachers delivering support programs or other aspects of the curriculum through release from face to face teaching. We would encourage you to also visit the following areas of our school:

An exciting new adventure begins!

Last Friday we welcomed our enthusiastic, eager and excited 2020 kindergarten students as they joined us to commence a new chapter in their learning journey at Beacon Hill. Our class of 2032 are quickly embracing all the fantastic opportunities that "big school" offers! You can't help but smile as you encounter their infectious enthusiasm. They have been well supported by their lovely year 6 buddies who have been the kindest, most supportive leaders.

Thank you also to the wonderful team of parents who generously gave their time to help support our new kindergarten parents with "big school" life at BHPS. Your friendly smiles, words of wisdom and support while sharing a cuppa and a shoulder were greatly appreciated by our new kinder parents.

2020 Staffing Update

We warmly welcome a number of new staff members to the BHPS team this year. We welcome Mrs Emmalea Greaney who will be teaching KG, Miss Lauren Shirdon who will be teaching 1S and Mrs Kate Hart who will be teaching 5G on Fridays and library lessons on Mondays. We also warmly welcome our new school psychologist Mr Dudley Poole. Mr Poole is replacing Ms Bryony Wood who is currently on maternity leave caring for her gorgeous little baby, Oliver.

It is lovely to have these wonderful people as part of the BHPS team this year and I know you will join me in extending a very warm, friendly Beacon Hill welcome to our new staff members. Be sure to introduce yourselves as I know they would be so appreciative.

P&C- a great way to get involved in our great school!

We warmly welcome our community to our first P and C meeting for 2020 on Tuesday 18 February in the library from 7:30pm. We have another exciting year ahead and you will have a much greater understanding of how our school operates through your attendance at these meetings. P & C meetings are held on the second Tuesday of every month during term time and new members are always welcome. This is a great opportunity for our parents/ carers to get a feel for the school culture too and meet some lovely people.

I would encourage you to come along to find out the many ways you can be involved in supporting our school, including but certainly not limited to:

* attending meetings and having input on directions

* becoming a member of a sub-committee

* assisting with fundraising

* volunteering to be a class parent representative.

We hope to see you there!

High School Information for 2021

Please keep an eye on the Beacon for information and brochures regarding ‘Open Nights’ and information evenings for our local high schools. These ‘Open Nights’ will be held in coming weeks and they are a wonderful opportunity to see high schools in action, learn about the extensive curriculum opportunities and quality teaching and learning programs that our public schools offer as well as ask any questions. We will also endeavour to include information regarding entrance exams for specialist classes, such as GATS classes as the information comes to us. Inquiries regarding these entrance exams can be made directly through the relevant high school. All Year 6 parents will receive a "Moving into Year 7 in a NSW Government School in 2021" Information Guide and Expression of Interest Form on 11 March which will outline the process of Year 7 2021 enrolment in more detail. Please don’t hesitate to contact us at school should you have any questions about this process.

PBL- Respect: Right Place, Right Time, Right Uniform!

I’d like to congratulate and commend our students on the manner in which they are wearing their school uniforms. Our students look wonderful and they should be so proud! Thank you to our parents and carers for the all-important support you provide to ensure that our students come to school wearing the correct school uniform each day.

Beacon Hill Public School Safety Procedures

Each year our school participates in lockdown and emergency evacuation drills. The purpose of these drills is to ensure staff and children know what is expected in the event of an emergency situation. These practices have occurred in our school for many years and are common practice throughout schools. While teachers do a wonderful job at keeping students calm and the majority of students, including kindergarten, would be used to the practices, it may help for parents to also talk to their children and to reassure them about these, if you feel your child may become anxious or worried.

DIGITAL DEVICES AND ONLINE SERVICES PROCEDURAL UPDATE, STUDENT USER AGREEMENTS AND MEDIA PERMISSION NOTE

This information replaces several previous communication relating to digital devices and online services and their use within the school and during school- related activities. Please read the information carefully with your child before signing the agreement regarding digital devices and online services used within school.

A new policy governing student use of digital devices and online services will apply in all NSW public schools from January 1 2020. The new policy includes the digital device restriction for primary schools announced by the NSW Government in December 2018 in response to the review into mobile phone use in schools. This review recommends that the use of mobile phones are banned during school hours and on excursions for primary students. This recommendation aligns with our existing procedure and understanding that students may bring a personal mobile phone to school for safety reasons. The policy and resources aim to support us balance the learning, safety and wellbeing needs of our students when they use digital technology and online services.

At Beacon Hill Public School, we expect that when our students use digital mobile devices they do so in a manner that reflects the core values being taught in schools, including the values of respect, responsibility, care and fairness. Unfortunately, when these technologies are misused by students, it can be very disruptive to teaching and learning.

Beacon Hill Public School acknowledges that students may need to be in possession of a mobile telephone at school for reasons relating to their safety in travelling to and from school. If a student brings a mobile phone to school it is expected to be in their school bag and switched off whilst on school grounds. If a parent or caregiver needs to contact a student at school, they are required to call the school’s main office and a message will be sent to the student. If a student needs to make emergency contact with anyone they can do so through the school’s main office and with the permission of their class teacher.

Acceptable Usage Policy

In order to ensure that all students and teachers in public schools can be provided with safe, secure and quality access to the internet, the NSW Department of Education expects all staff and students to understand and abide by the Online Communications Services: acceptable usage policy.

We want to support our students when they’re at school by offering them safe, secure and quality access to the internet. The NSW Department of Education’s policy for Online Communication Services: acceptable usage for school students outlines the rights and responsibilities for staff and students whenever they are using the internet at a school or other Department of Education location.

As teachers and staff we are committed to developing responsible digital citzenship with our students so that they can use the internet and media devices respectfully, responsibly and safely. Our teachers will talk through the acceptable usage policy with their students, and work with them to draw links between policy, classroom expectations and school rules.

As parents we seek your support in communicating and reinforcing the expectations for using the internet at school with your child/ren. These internet permission notes are the school-level procedure, based on the department-wide policy, and acknowledge the school’s expectations for acceptable behaviour. It is important that you have a discussion with your child before signing their permission note.

Please read through the information provided in the following notes (which will be emailed as well as a hard copy sent home) with your child/ren.

  • Digital devices and online services procedure updated for 2020
  • Acceptable Use Agreement for Students and Parents to sign
  • Media and E-learning platforms permission note

Please return these notes as soon as possible to your class teacher. Please see below for some handy cyber safety tips.

CYBER SAFETY TIPS-HOW TO MANAGE YOUR DIGITAL FOOTPRINT

With society becoming increasingly involved in social networking information and communication technology it is important that we remember that we use these information communication technologies responsibly.

One of the great things about being online is the ability to share videos and photos with your friends and seeing their response. It is important to remember that everything you post online combines to make your digital footprint. Remember that what is shared by you with your friends can also be viewed by people you don’t know. And once it’s online, it could be there forever.

You can manage your digital footprint by:

  • Keeping your personal details private
    • Not sharing your username or password with anyone.
    • Thinking before you post. Once posted, it can be difficult to remove

    • Not posting things that you don’t want others to know about or that you wouldn’t say to their face.

    • Being respectful of other people’s content that you post and share. Only post photos of others if you have their permission.

    • Talk to friends and family if something makes you uncomfortable, scared or sad. Or call the Kids Helpline 1800 55 1800 number to talk to an expert.

It is important to be mindful that most social networking sites such as Facebook and Instagram have a minimum age limit of 13 and are therefore not appropriate for primary school students.

You can also visit the e-safety website https://www.esafety.gov.au/ to get all the facts and for more information on cyber safety.

    In The Library

Welcome to another great year of learning, exploring, imagining, and discovering in the library.

This year Kindy and Year 1 will be borrowing 2 books every week and investigating the library, books, authors and information. Year 2 – 6 will have the opportunity to borrow every 2nd week starting week 3. They will also be exploring and developing research and information skills, digital technology and enhancing a love of reading. If students want to borrow outside of class borrowing time they can do so during 2nd half of lunch, Monday - Friday.

The Book Week theme for this year is Curious Creatures, Wild Minds. I look forward to exploring this theme and having fun.

The library will be opened during the 2nd half of lunch starting week 3, Monday 17th February. This year we will open to all year groups every day but numbers will be monitored. Each day will have a different activity to do. Each day students can borrow or read quietly plus Monday lego building, Tuesday colouring and drawing, Wednesday dominoes, marbles and cards and Thursday board games.  There will also be big connect four games available to play.

Students will be responsible for looking after this equipment and packing up properly to enable all students to have great equipment to use.

Any questions please let me know.

Please follow us on Instagram for information on new books library news and information. BHPS LIBRARY

Throughout the term I will be asking for your help. I will need parent volunteers to spend some time at school to cover new books. I will ask you to come in for a few hours to help. Small children are welcome to join. I will communicate this through the Beacon and the Instagram page. Students love new books and to keep the library up to date with new material we need your help. Stay posted, I appreciate your help.

Thank you for your continual support.

    Happy reading!

    Junior Band Welcome Night

TUESDAY  11 February – BAND WELCOME NIGHT!  Come to the MPC at 6.30pm.  It is not necessary for your child to attend but they are welcome. We will finish by 7.15pm but may be earlier.

Welcome Night is for parents of ALL registered students joining Junior Band this year – even siblings and non-hirers.  PLEASE try and attend this session as it is very challenging to distribute these items to individual parents at separate individual times and places.

After the short presentation there will be an opportunity to ask any questions as well as meet our new Conductor, Phillip Keyzer.

You will then be able to collect your child’s hire instrument (incl. care kit) if you have requested one, as well as their Band Bag, Band Music Folder and Book – very exciting!

There will be an email coming out later this evening to confirm your Hire requirements so please look out for it in your Inbox.  If you are unable to attend the Welcome Night, please email bandsecretary@bhpspc.com.  Likewise, if you or your child has decided not to join band at this time, please advise ASAP to the same email.
