PRINCIPAL’S THOUGHTS

Messages from Mr Dill

Spring Carnival – It’s On Sunday!

We are all looking forward to a great day out on Sunday at the Spring Carnival (Fete). This is a wonderful opportunity for our very special community to come together as one and give our children a fun day right here in their own backyard!

We hope you can join us!

Carnival Tips for the Kids

A few thoughts follow on helping the children (and parents) have a great time at the Spring Carnival on Sunday.

  • Remind them of Stranger Danger especially our young ones.  The key school  message is 'never go anywhere with anyone before asking a parent first'.
  • Discuss with children how they are going to keep their monies safe (so many fun outings are spoilt before getting going when wallets, purses or bags are lost or stolen...)
  • Walk around the school grounds to see all the activities children would like to have a go at, before lining up for an hour in one queue!
  • Please keep children off the stage until they are performing.
  • Remind children to be sun safe wearing a hat, blockout and drinking lots of water.
  • Leave bikes and scooters at home on Sunday.
  • Please remind your children that the Carnival is being run by parent volunteers who are giving up their day so that everyone can have a great time!
  • Be COVID safe (see article)

Chance to Dunk Mr Dill!

There will be a dunk tank at the Spring Carnival this Sunday. To have a throw at the dunk tank target, you can buy tickets on the day for $2 per throw, or 3 throws for $5. To have a shot at dunking Mr Dill, you will need to purchase a chocolate wheel ticket on the day.  Let's see how much money we can raise to get Mr Dill dunked!

If you or your year 5 or 6 child would like to volunteer to be dunked, please see attached permission note and bring it with you to the dunk tank on Sunday. Also bring a towel and change of clothes!

See you this Sunday at the Spring Carnival!

Parents are encouraged to bring along hat, sunscreen, picnic rug, coffee cup, shopping bag and EFTPOS card, to make their family day out more enjoyable.

FROM THE DEPUTY'S DESK

Tell Them From Me Student Feedback Survey

This term students in years 4-6 will be taking part in the second 'Tell Them From Me' student survey. The survey will provide us with valuable feedback on what our students think about school life, how engaged they are with school and the different ways that teachers interact with them. Participating in the survey is entirely voluntary. Your child will not take part if either you or your child do not wish too. If, during the survey, your child is uncomfortable, he/she can choose to stop the survey at any time. The majority of questions in the survey can be skipped if needed.

More information about the survey is available at:

education.nsw.gov.au/ttfm

If you do not want your child to take part in the survey, please complete the attached form and return it to school by 29th August, 2022.

Class of the Week - 5/6O

Students in class 5/6O have put their writing skills to good use. They have written detailed overviews of their favourite books, including why the book was chosen, a summary of the plot and reasons why you should read the book! A range of authors were selected. Their book reviews are on display outside Ms Colb's office.

COVID SAFETY UPDATES

SPRING CARNIVAL - COVID SAFETY PLAN

  • Please stay at home if you are not well.
  • Use rapid antigen tests before coming to the Spring Carnival.
  • Use sanitising stations.
  • Wear masks in outdoor high-traffic spaces (such as selling or collecting tickets).
  • Avoid mingling and queuing for food.
  • Maintain good hand hygiene.
  • Maintain social distancing.
  • Use contactless payment through Eftpos.
  • Avoid crowding in the hall.
  • Have a great time!

COVID 19 Update

While the peak of the current COVID-19 wave is likely behind us, NSW Health is continuing to emphasise that infection numbers are still high and that now is not the time to become complacent. Students should stay at home if they are unwell, and only return to school once they are well again.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Stage 2 Choir

The stage 2 choir had their cluster rehearsal for the Kakadu concert on Thursday in the Salvation Army Hall. They've been rehearsing 11 songs that they will perform later in September at the Town Hall with over 400 students.

You can catch them at 10am at the Spring Carnival this Sunday.

Please remind choir students that on Sunday at the Spring Carnival the whole choir will perform two songs. Wear whatever you like and meet at the stage at 10am.

Debating Report

This week the DPS teams debated against Nicholson Street Public School. The topic was 'Dangerous sport should be banned'. The Gillards were the away team. As the affirmative, they clearly and confidently argued that dangerous sports cause mental health issues for competitors, their loved ones and their supporters. They also pointed out the economic burden of sport injuries. Their teamline was ‘Extreme Sports, extreme consequences’.

Congratulations to 1st speaker Avery, 2nd speaker Sienna S, 3rd speaker Sienna Z and team advisor Natalia on their amazing debate, despite their loss. Well done Avery who excelled and was chosen as debater of the day in her first ever debate. A very big thank you to Ms Page for providing transport.

The negative team, the Rudds, comprising 1st speaker Gabi , 2nd speaker, Anya and 3rd speaker Lachlan and team advisor Julian, argued that it would be hard to define what a dangerous sport is and that enforcing protective gear and rule restrictions was preferable to banning. Their team line was ‘Ban dangerous sports, what's next?’.

The Rudds are congratulated on a convincing win. Well done Anya who was chosen as debater of the day by the adjudicator chosen for her amazing rebuttal delivery. Also, thank you to our chairperson Demi, timekeeper Arun, and meeter and greeters, Amber and Arun.

    Book Parade 2022

    Book Week

    The Parade!

Thank you everyone who took part in our Book Week parade on Wednesday, either as a participant or as an audience member. The students looked fantastic in their costumes and the number of parents who came to watch was amazing! Thank goodness the weather was on our side! After the parade, students got together on the playground to read some stories.

    From Kayana & Danielle  6M

On Wednesday morning, year 6 were excited to see their kindy buddies dressed in adorable book character costumes. Together, they walked to the basketball court, seeing an array of mesmerizing costumes. Each class took a turn circling the court as they waved to their parents with huge smiles on their faces. After the parade, year 6 and their buddies headed towards the infant playground finding the perfect book to read. Year 6 students were excited and passionate about sharing their love of reading with their kindy buddies and were grateful to have the opportunity to participate in their final book parade for primary school.

    The Authors!

On Monday, students from year 5 and 6 attended a writing workshop from Tim Harris. It was great to hear how an author starts the writing process, from the inspiration stage, to collecting ideas, to turning those ideas into a short story or novel. Students came away with some great tips on how to improve their own writing!

Unfortunately, Matt Cosgrove was unable to visit us for the author talk to K – 4 students. His visit has been rescheduled for Monday 5th September.

    Premier’s Reading Challenge!

The Premier’s Reading Challenge has officially closed for 2022. Well done to the 439 students who met the challenge! You will receive your certificates in Term 4.
