“All is Grace"

I heard those words often when I was in West Africa…and they came from people whose lives were pretty tough and who were aware of people whose situations were even tougher than theirs.  They certainly pulled me up short. I don’t think they were being naïve, ‘Pollyannaish’ or even trying to look on the bright side. Rather they were asserting that God can and does work for good, our personal good, in each and every situation.  God is on our side.

So why don’t we see it?  There may be a number of reasons.  Sometimes we are in so awful a situation that it will take time and personal growth before we can look back and understand it.

But more often it is because we are not looking at the situation in the right way.  I recently met with a friend whose life is a mess and who, I believe, is upset that God hasn’t gotten him out of it. What really amazed me is that there are a number of real choices he could make that would go towards dealing with his problems, but he will not take even one. His attitude is stopping change.  He wants total (miraculous) change or nothing and he won’t recognise that most real change in our lives comes in small steps, building on the good things already present and, often, employing the help of others.  In other words, he doesn’t recognise the good that is around him and so is giving no room for grace to move.  When we actually count our blessings, see the good within our reach, we open ourselves to God and let grace move within us.  And that is what I saw in the lives of those people in West Africa.  Tough as life may be, by focussing on their blessings they allowed grace to work even in the most difficult situations.

Loving God, open our minds and hearts to the goodness around us.  Let your Spirit work in our lives that we may follow the example of Jesus, offering grace and goodness to all.  We ask this in his name confident that you will hear us.

From the Principal

Last night we held our twilight swimming carnival. The last time the school held a swimming carnival was in 2015, making this our current Year Six students' first school carnival. They were excellent helpers in the pool, assisting the younger swimmers in their races. The evening was well supported by over 130 students and their families. My highlight of the carnival was watching the students congratulate their competitors and high-fiving teammates. This swimming carnival is a fun event that allows the children to showcase their developing skills and talents. My thanks are extended to the Parents and Friends Association for feeding the crowd while their own children were swimming. I am grateful for your commitment to all the students in our school.

As the year has progressed, there has been a decline in the attention to the hairstyles appearing in our school. Hairstyles should be conservative. Hair is to be neatly groomed and the student’s natural colour. If hair reaches the shoulders or is longer, it must be tied back away from the face with a navy, yellow or white hair accessory. Extreme styles and cuts are not acceptable, this includes mullets, tracks and undercuts. Blade one and two haircuts are not acceptable. Your attention to ensuring your child meets our guidelines is greatly appreciated. If you have doubts regarding a style, please check with me before making the change.

Leadership, Teachers and Learning Support have been working through class listings for 2023. Families will be notified of their child’s 2023 classroom teacher and class name in the week commencing Monday, 5 December.

This Thursday, the School Board and P and F executives are meeting for the annual dinner. The St Joseph’s School Board is an advisory group that works collaboratively with the Principal and the entire community to fulfil the vision and mission of the school. The current Board has some longer serving members and members who will no longer have students at St Joseph’s after this year. This Thursday, we will thank Mr James Jenkins, Mrs Korin Petersen and Mrs Stella Doyle for their service and thank and farewell Mr Walter Baxter. These members have been valued contributors and a positive support network for me during my first year leading St Joseph’s.

As the term winds down, let’s keep the spirits high

CHRISTMAS CONCERT

The Christmas Concert practice is underway across the year levels. The Concert is on Friday, 25 November in the undercover area. Each year level performs a Christmas item on the night. The class items are the first event of the evening and commence at 6:00 pm promptly. If your child is going to be absent, please inform the teachers to allow for appropriate planning of performances.

This year, Fun Time Amusements is the host for the rides and activities. The Parents and Friends Association has generously decided to cover the cost of these for all families.

The P and F have also organised several food vans as well as running the BBQ and bar. The food vans include Pizzas, Donuts, Icecream, Sno Cones and Fairy Floss. Pre-ordering and payment for the BBQ are to be done through Flexischools, and the cut-off date needs to be observed as no extras can be accommodated.

Gospel Reflection

What do we do when things go wrong? How do we find faith in God when life collapses around us? These are questions all Christians face and Sunday's gospel gives us a brief insight into the pain and struggle of Luke’s small community who had such faith and hope in Jesus, but life did not appear to be blessed. God wasn’t intervening to save them from conflict within families and persecution from governments. Luke tries to reassure his community that such discord and trouble is part of a living Christianity and can be expected. Faith in Jesus doesn’t take us out of the world or permit us to live as some sort of aliens in the world. We are part of a struggling humanity.

Please join Year 3 Gold for prayer at 8.35am this Friday.

Prayer Assembly and Roster

Each week as a community of believers we celebrate through prayer and ritual what it means to be a Catholic. Prayers and rituals will be led by a whole class year level and the purpose is not to perform but to foster the development of our student's spiritual and faith journey. This may mean that not every child will speak or take an active part in leading the prayer assembly. The scripture reference from Matthew highlights and reminds us of the importance and purpose of our school Prayer Assemblies. Jesus said “Where two or three gather in my name, I am there with them” Matthew 18:20.
