Kotara South Public School Newsletter

23rd February 2022 | Week 5 | Term 1

From the Principal

Welcome to our Week 5 Newsletter

While on my visits to classrooms, I can see a real sense of settling into school and returning to the routines and rhythms of school life. However, the teachers and myself are noticing some changes in children as the term wears on and the summer heat continues. Circumstances where, for example, a student is having trouble bouncing back from disappointment, or is unwilling to accept help. In some situations, students are continuing to make poor choices, not following classroom rules, and even in some cases there is an open defiance to get their own way. This is mostly being experienced in our K-3 students as they transition back to school behaviours.

We are also seeing that now that families are able to be out and about, weekends are very full with travel, visits, and activities which are leaving students exhausted for Monday and the week ahead.

We are working on resilience and persistence with our students and looking for opportunities to build these. We ask for parents’ assistance at home in reminding children to ensure that they are bouncing back from disappointment, acknowledging that not everything may go their way – but to keep trying.

Pushing through the momentary discomfort of challenge, allows growth and achievement.

ZONE SWIMMING

As this Newsletter goes to print, our KSPS students are representing our school at the Newcastle City Zone PSSA Swimming carnival at Lambton pool. Congratulations to all students who attended the carnival today. More information to come on the results of the carnival. The swimmers are:

BOYS: Nixon, Jackson HS, Finn O’B, Quinn, Marcus, Spencer T, Jai, Gabe, Flynn, Noah, Billy

GIRLS: Zahli, Bronte, Chilli, Maya, Sophia HS, Ava, Ashely, Emily C, Ruby O’B, Ellie, Tahlia, Kiera, Orla

READ, READ, READ!

Can I remind all parents that whilst there is no formalised homework for students, that we encourage children to read each night to their parents, to a sibling, or quietly to themselves. This continued practice and rehearsal of reading strategies promotes confidence and ability. We recommend stage 1 children read for no longer than 15 minutes, stage 2 children for 25 minutes and stage 3 children for 30 minutes. There is of course the continued encouragement to read to your child when you are able to. There is nothing more comforting than snuggling, reading, and listening to a book with a loved one.

ASSEMBLIES

I would like to remind parents that even though we are not having face to face assemblies each week in the hall as yet, we are still holding assemblies each Friday at midday. This webinar presentation goes for no longer than 30 minutes and often includes important information for both parents and students. You are warmly invited to attend our virtual assembly this Friday from midday. You will need an active Zoom account to access the webinar. The link is:

SCHOOL PHOTOS

Coming up on Thursday 10th March are our whole school photos. We ask parents to ensure your child is present on the day to mark this special occasion. Unless of course they are sick. The School Photographer has specific envelopes that will be sent home on 1st March. Please fill these in after purchasing your photo package online. Do not return the envelope until photo day please.

ROAD SAFETY

Over the past fortnight, I have had situations of dangerous driving and parking reported to me and I have also personally witnessed them myself. On one such occasion, a parent parked within the school crossing zone, called her child across the crossing to get in the car and then did a U-turn, turning back over the crossing to go in the opposite direction. Almost every single afternoon, parents and teachers report speeding in the 40km school zone, parents pulling up double-parking and calling their child across the road and other various dangerous activities. We have also had reports of students running down the access lane hill towards Moruya Parade and running straight out onto the road. On some occasions, I am sent photographs or videos of these events. Please know I am lawfully bound to pass these onto the Police for further action. Road safety is everyone's responsibility. As the adults, both staff and parents need to always display safe and lawful driving and parking.

HATS

Every day your child needs a hat to play and be part of PE and sport lessons.  Hats are part of our school uniform. If your child does not have a hat, please order one today, via our KSPS P&C online store. These links can be found on their P&C Facebook page. Labelling your child's hat with their name and class helps to have it returned to them if they lose it.  For this fortnight, all staff are ensuring each child in their class wears a hat to play before school, at lunch and recess. The KSPS P&C online shop can be found here.

STUDENT PARLIAMENT

Today is our first Student Parliament for 2022. Thank you to our leadership team and Parliamentary Minsters for their establishment work they have already done across the school. We look forward to a year of student action. More information to come.

PARENT/TEACHER INTERVIEWS

This year, we will be hosting our Parent/Teacher Interviews in Term 1 across the weeks of 9 and 10 this term. The bookings will be available via the Sentral Parent Portal, this is the web-based online platform where you receive your child's Student Reports. Booking sessions will open at 6pm on Sunday 13th March and close at 5pm on Friday 18th March. We encourage all parents to take the opportunity to be part of the interview process. At this stage we are planning face to face in the hope that the current situation of coming onto grounds for reporting and curriculum purposes will still be available to us. Smaller adult numbers spread across the school, mask wearing and ventilation will allow for the face to face interviews to take place. The interviews take place over weeks 9 and 10 of the fortnight  Monday 21 March, finishing 1st April. We will host one late afternoon Tuesday 22 March until 5:30pm. In other circumstances, phone interviews are also possible if you make direct contact with your child's teacher.

As we move into the middle of term one, I encourage parents to keep developing consistent and purposeful routines with their children at home. Make bedtimes and eating well a priority. Rest and good fuel = great learning.

Thanks for making #KSPSagreatpalcetobe

Learning & Support at KSPS

More and more at KSPS, the learning and Support Team are seeing that one of the keys to supporting our students is to support parents and carers to do the hardest job in the world - parenting. In light of this, the Learning and Support Team will draw your attention in each Newsletter this term to a particular support service aimed at providing parents with the tools and information needed to support your children. The support focus is social/ emotional, resilience, persistence and independence - the aspects of our children’s development that is so challenged at this point in time.

How do you know if your child’s anxiety is out of the ordinary?

What can you do to support through the ups and downs of life?

How can you take on the role of the coach in your child’s life?

These are some of the questions addressed in the No Scaredy Cats for Parents online parenting course. It is a parent-led child development program to give parents the skills to identify, manage and reduce anxiety. The course has been created by a highly experienced psychologist and teacher and is a cost-effective online course for parents and carers.

Please follow the link to register

https://www.parentshop.com.au/parents/no-scaredy-cats-for-parents

In other Learning and Support news - we are initiating a new procedure this year of sending an email to parents of mainstream students who are currently receiving supplementary, substantial or extensive adjustments at school. The letter attached to the email will inform parents of the type and level of support their child is receiving and parents will have the opportunity to discuss this support with class teachers at the parent/ teacher meetings in weeks 9 and 10 of this term.  Email addresses will be sourced from our SENTRAL platform so please if your communication details have changed, let the office know.

Primary Ethics

CALL OUT for volunteers to join a great team at KSPS to teach Primary Ethics. Each Friday for 30 minutes you can facilitate the ethical development of the students at KSPS.

The AIM of Primary Ethics is to support children to develop skills in ethical reasoning, critical thinking and respectful discussion by enabling community volunteers to deliver ethics classes in public primary schools.

If you would love to help students, your school and your community please contact: marilyn.sainsbury@hotmail.com

Special Religious Education (SRE) - Volunteers Needed

My name is Sally Smith. I live in Kotara and I’ve been coordinating SRE at KSPS for the past 10 years. If you’re thinking of volunteering at the school and you’re a person of faith, then teaching SRE might be a way you can contribute to the school community.

Many have been enjoying flexible working conditions in the past 2 years and if that’s you, then teaching an SRE class when you drop off your kids on Fridays might suit you well. SRE helps kids explore relevant life issues based on Christian values like, compassion, forgiveness, respect for all people. It gives students tools to help in times of uncertainty and crisis - all very rewarding. You’d be joining a team committed to the wellbeing and success of a variety of students, many who may not otherwise have the opportunity to be part of a supportive group that nurtures kids’ spirit.

I’d love to talk with you about volunteering in SRE. Training is available online and engaging curriculum materials are provided. You can contact me by email sallyjsmith12@gmail.com

Introducing Mrs Erin Wilson

My name is Mrs Erin Wilson and I am so excited to be back working at the ‘greatest place to be!’ I feel very privileged to be surrounded by such wonderful colleagues and students.

In 2020, I job shared with Ms Kim Talbot on HSU (term 1 and 2) and previously have done a lot of casual teaching at KSPS. Prior to this, I spent two years teaching in Glen Innes and last year I was teaching at Fern Bay Public Sschool.

In 2022, I will be working Tuesday - Thursday as a RFF teacher (release from face to face) with stage 1, 2 and 3. I will be teaching the exciting key learning area of creative arts that is composed of visual art, music, dance and drama. Each week students will focus on one area of creative arts. Learning about theory and engaging in practical activities. It has been positive to see students’ excitement and engagement when participating in lessons. Many students are sharing their creative experiences in which they participate outside of school. Students are welcome to bring in their musical instrument if they play one and share their talent with the class. If your child chooses to do this, their instrument will be kept inside the creative arts room and only used during their RFF lesson.

Outside of school, I enjoy spending time with my family and chasing my energetic toddler around! I am a big dog lover, avid coffee drinker and love listening to music and spending weekends in the water.

I look forward to working with your child to further develop their skills and confidence in the area of creative arts.

Warm regards,  Erin Wilson | CAPA RFF Teacher – C Block

Counsellor Corner

We all experience difficulties from time to time, and kids are no different. But some children seem to encounter problems or feel the effects more so than others. Families are often in the best position to spot issues with a child’s emotions, thinking or behaviour. If a child close to you is having problems that stick around for more than a few weeks and interfere with school, home, friendships or daily life, it’s time to get some professional advice.

The first step is taking time to observe what’s going on.

Signs of concern

  • Frequent, unexplained temper tantrums

  • Unusual fears

  • Difficulty going to sleep or staying asleep

  • Sadness and feelings of hopelessness that don’t go away

  • Avoiding friends or family and wanting to be alone most of the time

  • Refusing to go to preschool or school on a regular basis

  • Inability to get along with other children

  • Hyperactive behaviour or constant movement beyond regular playing

  • Noticeable disinterest or decline in school performance

  • Frequent aggressive reactions (more than is reasonably expected in the situation)

  • Difficulties with concentration, attention and organisation

  • Any other changes from their usual way of acting over a short period of time

Kids experience a wide range of emotions and behaviours as part of growing up, so any of these signs in isolation is not necessarily cause for concern. This list should be used as a guide only, but the more signs your child is showing and the more distressed they seem, the more important it is to seek some advice from a professional.

P&C Association

The Annual General Meeting – not as scary as it sounds!

The KSPS P&C Annual General Meeting (or AGM) is held each year in March; this year it will be on Wednesday 9 March at 6.30pm, followed by a regular meeting at 7pm, in the school library. During the meeting, all positions are declared vacant and the executive team for 2022 is voted in. The President and Treasurer also present reports summarising our activities for the previous year. We’d love to encourage all members, new and old, to attend the AGM and stay for the regular meeting afterwards. Please don’t stay away because you don’t want to be voted in! The majority of positions already have nominations submitted, and no-one will be asked to do something that they don’t want to do. If no-one is nominated for a position, it will remain vacant.

If you would like to nominate yourself or someone else for a position (President, Vice President – Canteen, Vice President – Uniforms, Treasurer, Secretary, Events coordinator, Uniform Shop coordinator), please email the P&C for a nomination form. Please note that you need to be a paid-up member of the P&C to nominate someone, hold a position or vote at P&C meetings, so please join (or rejoin) the P&C if you haven’t already done so by purchasing a $2 membership via the Uniform Shop online store.

Canteen

The BEST school canteen managed by the fantastic Mrs Fiona Best is open five days a week, but this can only happen with the help of volunteers. Your support is greatly appreciated, whether it is once a year, once a month or every week.

You can find the online roster here: Online Canteen Roster. Mrs Best is still in need of helpers to fill out the roster for this term. Each shift is from school drop off (around 8.30-8.50am) until approximately midday. Fiona will send you home with a delicious lunch as a thank you for your assistance. Please note that no children are allowed in the canteen while you are helping. Thank you so much for supporting the BEST canteen!

If you haven’t already done so, why not try ordering your child’s lunch with our Qkr! phone app. It’s easy to set up and use. Instructions can be found on the school website here.

Qkr Tip: Please make sure you are ordering lunch for the correct day! We occasionally have upset students who are expecting a lunch order but don’t receive one. This is almost always because the lunch order has been placed for the wrong day. We will always ensure your child has something to eat, but please do double check that date (on your order receipt, or when you are picking the order date at the start of your order).

You can place your order or cancel it up until 8:50 am each day.

Uniform Shop

Our uniform shop co-ordinator, Stephanie Dooley, fills uniform shop orders on Tuesday mornings between 8.30am and 9am. Please order and pay using our online store: https://kotara-south-public-school-pc-association.square.site/. Orders received before 8.30am on Tuesday will go home with your child that day. During busy times we may need two days to fill all the orders, in which case your order will come home on Wednesday. It is important to include your child’s name and class in the “Notes to Seller” part of the online checkout so we can send the orders to your child’s class to take home with them.

In-person visits to the uniform shop are available by appointment only. Please email the P&C or the uniform shop (kspsuniforms@gmail.com) if you need to make an appointment.

Mother’s Day Stall – crafters wanted!

When it comes to prizes and gifts for our fundraising events, we are trying to increase our support for local, handmade, and/or Australian made, where possible.

We already have some great items lined up our annual Mother's Day Stall, but we would love your input, too. Perhaps you, or someone you know, can contribute something that mums and mother-figures of all ages would enjoy.

For our Mother's Day Stall, the only limits on creativity are that items must:

  • be suitable and safe for kids to handle and purchase (nothing that could cause physical injury or allergy, no button batteries),
  • fit in a regular sized carry bag,
  • retail for between $2 and $10,
  • be non-perishable,
  • and price-flexible to allow us a small profit margin on each item.

To take part, please complete the form (link here: https://forms.gle/kbsLJM3MekWHKB7CA) to include the details of the person/s you are suggesting. We can't promise to purchase items from everyone that is suggested to us, but we will look into all suggestions and keep everyone's details on file for future events.

Book Club

The P&C runs the Scholastic Book Club program at KSPS. We collect orders once a term. Look out for a Book Club catalogue coming home in your child’s bag later this term, with instructions on how to order and pay online.

Thank you for supporting KSPS P&C!
