Term 3 - Week 4 (12 August 2022)

Dear St Mary's School Community

Values in Focus: Responsibility

We have a duty to be accountable to yourselves and to others.

Gospel: Luke 12: 49-53

Sunday’s Gospel calls us to understand that it is important to remember that our life on earth is short and, in the time that we have, we should prepare ourselves for our eternal life with God.  When life is difficult, remember that Jesus is always with us and will always give us what we need when we turn to him in prayer.

Feast of the Assumption

On Monday, the Catholic Church celebrates the Feast of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary.  This is a holy day of obligation whereby Catholics are expected to attend Mass.  The Assumption signals the end of Mary’s earthly life and marks her return to heaven to be reunited with Jesus. While the bodies of both Jesus and Mary are now in heaven, there is a difference between the Assumption and the Resurrection. Where Jesus arose from the tomb and ascended into heaven by his own power, Mary’s body was taken up to heaven by the power of her Son.  Year One will be leading us in the Mass of the Assumption, which will be held on Monday, 15 August at 9.00am in the Church.  All are welcome to attend.

The Faction Long Jump events will be held at St Mary's on Thursday 18th August. All students from Years One to Six will take part during their class' scheduled Physical Education lesson. The format for the day is outlined below. Further information can be found on Skoolbag.

Assembly

The Year Two Class will be leading the Assembly next Friday, at 9.00am in the Undercover Area.  All are welcome to attend.

Science Week

Next week, we celebrate Science Week at St Mary’s School.  The students will all come together for an assembly on Tuesday morning before completing many activities during the week in Science/STEM time with Mrs McCormack.

The school theme for National Science Week in 2022 is Glass: More than meets the eye. It is based on the UN International Year of Glass. It will celebrate the many roles that glass plays in our lives – from phone screens to optical fibre to glassware in labs – plus investigating glass as a part of our sustainable future. The uses for and intrinsic nature of glass in science make it a suitable topic for investigation across all strands of science education.

This will be followed by a Science morning for all St Mary’s families following Friday’s assembly.  Immediately following Friday’s assembly, students (PP-6) and their parents will be able to complete a range of activities in the Science Room with their children.  This will also give everyone a chance to visit the renovated Science room.

Board Games

Thank you to the P&F who have recently purchased a large selection of board games for the students to use.  These will come in handy during wet weather and are a welcome addition to all classrooms!

Wellbeing Week

Next week is Wellbeing Week. Students will not have homework (reading is still expected to occur). Enjoy the extra time to spend together as a family and remember to take time out for some self-care.

Go the Dockers!

God Bless and have a lovely weekend with your families,

Ms Adriana Coniglio

Principal

Class News

Science/Design and Technology News

Our theme for Design and Technology this term is ‘Food and Fibre production.’

We are looking at a number of projects for the classes.

The Pre-Primary class are looking at plant and animal products that we use every day for food, clothing and shelter.  We are going to learn about the cycle of wheat, cotton and wool.

The Year One class are learning about how plants and animals have basic needs, such as nutrients, food, water and space.  We will also be keeping an eye on the vegetable garden to keep up the maintenance of pulling weeds and making sure the soil is kept moist.

The Year Two class are focussing of how we can choose food that is healthy for us.  They are going to create a menu of healthy food for breakfast, lunch and dinner.  They are going to investigate free range chicken farming and the production process.  Our chickens at school will help us identify the differences.

The Year Three/Four class are investigating different equipment used to produce food and how it has changed.  They will also look at the different processes and technologies used now to produce food for example potatoes and rice.

The Year Four/Five class investigating the types of technologies used and how to meet consumer needs.  How to increase efficiency of production systems to meet consumer satisfaction.  For example, how can we ensure that milk is of a high standard.

The Year Six class are looking at how farmers can design sustainable food and fibre systems for their products.  Will the systems in place work for the future needs?

Vegetable Patch

On Tuesday, the Year Six and Kindergarten classes braved the cold to plant our vegetable garden.  They listened to a talk from Kat White about different vegetables and how to care for our garden.  A HealthyWA grant has provided us with the money we needed to plant and care for the garden.  We look forward to showing you the progress.

Science Week – Glass

We are looking forward to Science Week in Week Five.  To begin our week, the Year Six students will inform us of what we use glass for and the purposes of glass. Each class will be involved in a range of activities during the week.

On Friday morning after assembly, parents are welcome to come to the Science/STEM with their child, to see what activities they have been doing.

We look forward to seeing you.
