2022 Term 2 Issue 6

From the Principal

Dear families & friends,

Student Learning summaries and parent-teacher conferences have been sent home and completed. We were really pleased with the high take up of conferences by families as this is an important conversation focused on each students learning progress and goals. The primary students all were given the opportunity to read their own report and ask any questions before taking it home to families so that they know where they are up to and what their next steps are.

We are excited to be having families come in for Learning Expo on Tuesday 5th July. It won’t be the full expo as we still are unable to have whole group assembly style performances, however families will be able to come in and speak with their child about their Inquiry learning in particular. There will be 2 sessions – Juniors 2 – 2.30pm and Primary 2.40 – 3.10 so that we are able to use the spaces across the site in line with Covid recommendations. We ask that a maximum of 2 adults per family attend and recommend the wearing of masks when inside the building. Each group have sent home further information via SeeSaw about how to enter and what will be shared.

Traffic issues continue to be a concern to us, both on Briar Rd and in the drop off area in the driveway. Governing Council and some individual members of our community are working on ways to be heard by our local council and members of parliament to try and make some change to the traffic conditions and make it safer for our students. We will be sending out further information on ways you can report unsafe traffic and parking issues. It is important that we are role models for the local community in our own behaviour and that we are following the road rules and guidelines to keep students safe. Pleas remember that the drop off area should only be used if students can enter and exit the car and the school independently. Adults should not exit their vehicle in this area.

We are very excited to announce that the opening of a Vacation Care service has now been approved. We are now working through the processes with our plan to open our first Vacation Care in the September/October holidays. There is a substantial amount of set up work to be done including policies, fee structures, programming, staffing, budget etc. The OSHC committee and Governing Council will be supporting Hannah to work through the necessary processes.

Next week is the last week of Term 2 and we have a few things planned including Learning Expo, Morialta Day and our Pj & Hot Chocolate day. Please see the program sent home previously for details.

I want to make special mention of our little group of Hot Chocolatiers. Stella, Tori, Willa, Annie, Nora & Charlotte as part of their Investigation in Nicole’s class, came to me a few weeks ago with a proposal to sell hot chocolate and raise money for the RSPCA.  The girls have worked with Gillian and have managed to gain donations from Woolworths, Coles and Drakes, who have provided above and beyond to the girls, milk, chocolate and marshmallows after writing to the managers of our local stores explaining their plan. Remember to bring along your money and your mug on the last day of term to support the group’s mission to raise money for the RSPCA!

Congratulations Lauren! As most of you will know Lauren has announced she is expecting her first baby later this year. Lauren will be taking maternity leave from the beginning of term 4. We are currently looking at who we can secure to replace Lauren for term 4. We will then start planning for 2023.

AS previously sent out, next week (week 10) I will be taking leave to have some planned surgery that was delayed due to Covid. The recovery time for this will be approximately 6 weeks. During this time Chantal Rainsford will be stepping up as Acting Principal. I feel very confident in Chantal and our amazing team to keep everything moving along while I am away. Chantal can be contacted via the school email or phone and will be increasing her regular time of 2 days per week to a full time position. I will be unavailable during this time.

I look forward to seeing you all again in Week 4 next term.

Cheers Skye 😊

Bring your mug and your money!! Hot Chocolate fundraiser for R.S.P.C.A.

In Investigation Willa, Stella, Tori, Annie, Nora and Charlotte had an idea. They all wanted to raise money for RSPCA because they all love animals. The girls came up with a proposal to sell hot chocolate to everyone to raise the money. They went to see Skye and told them their plan. Skye agreed and then Gillian was appointed as their staff contact person.

Gillian and the students worked together and worked out a budget, plans for advertising and wrote letters to local shops for donations. We were all excited to see the donations come in.

Well done girls on using your initiative to plan something that gives back to our local community. So bring along a mug and some money to support RSPCA on Friday 8th July!

Letters to the local shop managers

The Life Cycle of a Monarch Butterfly

Both the Juniors and Primarys have been lucky enough to have a butterfly station set up in each of their spaces, allowing them the opportunity to observe the different stages of a butterflies life.

First we had caterpillars, they then formed a chrysalis hanging upside down from a silk pad, finally they emerged to be released into the forest.

It has been so exciting for the students to observe the changes in real time!

Gadlabarti Garden

Earlier in the year FCS received a mini grant from the conservation organisation Roots and Shoots (founded by Jane Goodall) to develop a native bee garden. The project was named the Gadlabarti Garden as the word ‘gadlabarti’ means ‘bee’ in the Kaurna language.

Our Primary 1 class was chosen to start the project off and were involved in weekly sessions in term 1. The students began by researching native bee species of South Australia and the European honey bee. They then created a poster and delivered a presentation to share what they had discovered with their classmates. In another session the students also mapped the Forest as the garden was to be sited in this area of the school. Unfortunately, due to rain the students were unable to be involved in the planting process. To finish the term Sandra from the Adelaide Bee Sanctuary came and gave the class a presentation on the European Honey Bee, bringing a hive (minus the bees) and her apiary gear.

In term 2, a Working Bee was held on the Queen’s Birthday long weekend, a group of families came together to help plant bee friendly native plants, clear the ground of weeds and non-native bushes and put up two bee hotels (donated by Bunnings Windsor Gardens). Some of the children used their initiative to collect as many snails as they could find which were later escorted off site! Thank you to Claire, Ken & Adelaide, Mel & Ella, Lucy, Adam, Nora, Maggie & Hugo, Victor & Elene, Charlotte (Diesel’s mum), Manju, Bobby, Eva & her little sister.

Next for the project:

A visit by Roots & Shoots South Australia to the Primary classes about Jane Goodall and the organisation.

Felixstow Highlights

Primary

In Primary we have been working hard on our Inquiry projects for Learning Expo which we are so excited to showcase to our families, our topic has been 'I can transform waste to make change'.

We have also had some great achievements this week in P2 with Qasim having a writing piece published and Diesel donating an incredible amount of bread tags for the Breadtags for Wheelchairs charity.

Juniors

In the Juniors we have been working on writing descriptive sentences. We are looking at images and using adjectives to describe colour, shape, actions and quantities.

These examples are shared writing that we composed as a class. We are also working on capital letters and full stops

Dear Felixstow Students and Families

Bunnings BBQ ‘Sausage Sizzle’ Fundraiser

Another successful Bunnings BBQ Fundraiser was held at Windsor Gardens on Sunday 19th June. Though the footfall wasn’t quite as busy as the previous BBQ in term 1, we still cooked and sold 42kg of sausages and 10kg of sliced onion plus we went through 30 loaves of bread. Altogether we raised $1267 that will go towards the purchase of an outdoor filtered water fountain for the students, as requested by a parent and some students.

We would like to show our appreciation by saying thank to the following parents and staff for their contribution either by volunteering at the BBQ and/or for making a donation;

Tom Beck (Jai & Louie’s dad)

Amedeo Lago (India’s dad)

Felicity Turner (Beatrice & Violet’s mum)

Lucy Mussared (Nora & Maggie’s mum)

Phil Comley (Dylan’s dad)

Kerryn Hibberde (Aiden’s mum)

Nav Mann (Raghuveer’s dad)

Agatha Skinner (Lidija’s mum)

Mel Burge (Ella’s mum)

Vinod Coelho (Zoe J & Xavi’s dad)

Hosnia Ali (Hadisa’s mum)

Staff: Jenny, Nicole, Laura (and Steve), Camille and Gillian.

In addition, we would also like to thank those families who showed their support by coming along and purchasing a sausage or two!

Finally, we would like to thank Woolworths Newton for their donation of a $50 gift card which went towards the cost of the bread.

New Furniture

Following the term 1 Bunnings BBQ Fundraiser we purchased two more items of furniture; another mobile curved book case for displaying our non-fiction collection and a pyramid book display for showcasing our newest books.

Resource Hub Student Monitors

I would like to thank our present student monitors (Amelia, Elene, Hannah, India, Joelle, Niamat, Oliver, Raghuveer, Zahra, Zoe J and Eva) for their role in helping to keep the Resource Hub

functioning, especially with the circulation of books (borrowing books and scanning returns, sorting and shelving and other tasks when asked).

We are now inviting new applications for the role of Student Resource Hub Monitor for terms 3 & 4. Any students in years 3-5 who are interested please see Kelly for an application form.

Book covering

We would like to thank Charlotte (Diesel’s mum) and Adele (Pippa and Archie’s mum) for covering new books for the Resource Hub. I know it can be a laborious task but it is very much appreciated.

Kind regards

Kelly
