SUTTON PUBLIC SCHOOL

June 3rd - Week 6

From the Principal

Good two-way communication between families and schools is necessary for our students' success. The more parents and teachers share relevant information with each other about a student, the better equipped both will be to help that student achieve academically.

Our formal parent/teacher interviews to be held from next week are an important way of supporting communication between home and school. At parent-teacher interviews you can discuss your child’s development at school with their classroom teacher. You can also share information about your child.

After meeting with a teacher, it's important to discuss the interview with your child and really congratulate them on their strengths. If the teacher made suggestions of things you could do at home, discuss these with your child and commit to following through with them.

Parent/Teacher interviews will be held between Wednesday, 8th June and Wednesday, 22nd June. Interviews are strictly 10 minutes and spaces are limited. If you require an interview outside of the published times for your child's teacher, or more time with a particular teacher, please arrange a separate meeting by telephoning the school. Bookings are open online until 4pm Friday, 3 June.   Go to www.schoolinterviews.com.au and enter the code  jq3rx.

Please remember that our staff welcome you to get in touch about your child's progress at any time throughout the year and are happy to speak in person and on the phone at a mutually convenient time.

We look forward to seeing you.

Drop off and Pick Up

 Drop off / Pick up

A member of staff will be on duty at the gate from 8:50am to meet and greet students arriving to school. There will also a member of staff on duty to supervise students on the basketball court from that time.

Parents  are also welcome to ‘walk in and drop off ’ their child to  morning lines between 8:50am and 9:15am.  Parents must not move beyond the courtyard area in front of the kindergarten classroom, must not enter rooms  and must depart at the ringing of the bell.

In the afternoon, parents are able to enter school grounds to meet children at our ‘pick up point’ or continue to wait at the gate. Our 'pick up point' is the area at the front of the school beside the totem poles. Students on ‘pick up’ will be seated on the silver seats. Supervising staff will  dismiss students to parents  from 3:10pm in the following order: kindergarten, singles and family groups.

Meetings, events and volunteering

Parents are able to meet with staff by making an appointment. Contact can be made via email, or through the school office. In these circumstances all visitors must sign in using the ‘check-in’ and will be met at the office.

Parents are able to volunteer to assist with a range of activities and programs in the school including activities such as book covering for the library, canteen on Friday, kitchen garden and more. In these circumstances all visitors have signed declaration for child-related workers , sign in using the ‘check-in’ app, provide evidence of full vaccination and collect a visitor’s pass.

When school invites parents to attend assembly and special events on school site, all parents are welcome regardless of vaccination status but must ‘check in' using the Services NSW app.

Check In to Sign In

The Department of Education requires all visitors to schools to ‘check in’ via the NSW Services App using a unique QR code displayed at the school office. This ‘check in’ now replaces the physical signing in process. While initially the ‘check in’ code was introduced to support contact tracing as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, for NSW Government Schools the app now provides an additional level of security at our school.

Parent/Teacher Interviews

Ethics Classes for Sutton

A feature of the public education system in NSW is the opportunity to provide time in class for education in ethics, faith and morality from a religious or non-religious perspective at the choice of parents.

Special religious education (SRE) is education in the beliefs and practices of an approved religious persuasion. schools allow time for special religious education. It is delivered by authorised representatives of approved religious groups to students who have nominated that religion.

At Sutton Public School we provide a combined Christian scripture class provided by the Anglican Diocese of Canberra and Goulburn who implement the Godspace curriculum. We are and are grateful to our wonderful volunteers for their commitment to the students at Sutton Public School who are part of the ongoing ‘Special Religious Education’ (SRE) program they offer.

Scripture classes resume on Thursday week 6 (will not take place in week 7 due to the athletics carnival) and then continue each Thursday until the end of term.

Special education in ethics (SEE) is a program in ethical decision making, action and reflection within a secular framework. It is delivered by authorised representatives of approved program,  if available, to provide an option to students who are not attending SRE.

Students not enrolled in SRE (scripture) or SEE (ethics) will continue to work with teachers during these sessions.

This term, volunteers with Primary Ethics are available to introduce ethics class  to students in Years 5 and 6 who are not enrolled in a scripture class.  Primary Ethics is the not-for-profit organisation which has developed the resources to run the program approved by the Department of Education.  A SEE permission note has been sent home to students who are not enrolled in our SRE classes.  Stage 3 students wishing to participate in this program are asked to return a signed permission note by Tuesday 31 May.

For more information about Special Religious Education (SRE) and Special Education in Ethics (SEE), including the list of approved providers, please visit: https://education.nsw. gov.au/teaching-and-learning/curriculum/learning-across-the-curriculum/religion-and-ethics

Indigenous Literacy Foundation - Book Swap

Once again we will hold a book swap to support the ILF.

Students are invited to donate pre-loved books in good condition, then during the book swap, 29th June - 1st July  (week 10), browse our stall and swap a gold coin for a book. Previous book swaps have been generously supported by our school community and we look forward to another successful fundraiser.

All donations go towards  providing culturally relevant books and learning resources to children and families living in remote Communities across Australia. Donations also support the publishing of books written by Communities, for Communities, in languages of their choice.

We please ask that books be dropped off to the hall from Monday 6th, week 7.
