From the Principal

Welcome to 2023!

Dear Peachester Community,

Welcome back everyone! A very warm welcome to all of our new families, returning families and friends who have chosen our wonderful school for your child/children. I hope that you all had a safe and relaxing holiday and are now ready for a new year of learning and fun.

We have an exciting year planned ahead and are looking forward to continuing the work from last year as well as achieving a new set of improvement goals. I look forward to your continued support throughout the year and hope we can continue to work together to ensure Peachester State School continues to do the best for your child/children.

Day 8 Census

Every year the Department of Education conducts a census of enrolments on the 8th Day and the 20th day of school. The results of the census determine the staffing that the Department provided to the school as well as the size of the school grant. As a result, we need to make sure that we reflect to the Department our school enrolments accurately…..as it is these numbers which will inform our staffing.

The decision to go with 4 classes was appropriate with our confirmed enrolments at the end of 2022 and fitting when we opened our doors with 101 learners last week. With some new families joining us this week, we now fit the EQ model for 5 classes.

We are working with our HR department to find the very best fit for our school to ensure there is no disruption to the learning and wellbeing of our learners. Parents and Carers of students who will move into a new class will be contacted as soon as we finalise the details. It is anticipated that we will have the following classrooms:

Prep – Year 1

Year 1 – Year 2

Year 2 – Year 3

Year 3 – Year 4

Year 5 – Year 6

With new classes, there are many new friendships opportunities too. Staff take the needs of every child into account when choosing class break-ups, spending countless hours deliberating the best for each learner. Remember that children learn different skills from different classmates. You can gently help them make new friends and grow as an individual at the same time.

Classroom Teachers

Our teachers often arrive early in the morning to do preparation, planning and setting up for the day before the students enter the room. This means that classroom doors may be closed to parents and students until 8:45am. Once the students enter the room things can become fairly busy with homework folders, note collections, the sharing of news about birthdays and other family events and so on.

We encourage parents to maintain regular communication with teachers, however, sometimes it is more appropriate to make an appointment particularly when discussions require confidentiality or time, so that the topic is valued. Appointment times can be negotiated with your child’s teacher prior to school if required. Our staff meetings are usually scheduled on Wednesday at 3:10pm and teachers will be unavailable. Please avoid requesting appointments with your child’s teacher at this time.

School Procedures

Morning Drop-Off's

Students should not arrive prior to 8:30am, unless they are booked into KidSpace OSHC. If your child is early, they are required to sit in Administration and read quietly until 8:30am when a staff member is on duty in the Undercover Area.

Morning Bell

A warning bell is rung at 8:45am in the morning. This will give students time to go to the bathroom and get into class and be ready for instruction at 8:50am. All students need to be at school prior to this bell and be ready to begin learning. We appreciate parental support with these requirements as late arrivals cause interruptions to both the class teacher and the students who are able to be organised.

Late Arrivals

Any students who arrive after 8:50am will need to report to the office for an orange late slip before going to class. Parents, we would appreciate your support in ensuring that your children are ready for the commencement of class before this time.

Attendance

As we commence the start of a new year, parents are reminded of the importance of sending children to school every school day unless there is a reasonable excuse for the student to be away, such as illness. Research shows that students who have a good attendance record are more likely to achieve high results. Going shopping, visiting family, staying up late, being tired or extending school holidays are not acceptable reasons to be away from school. Visit the Department of Education website for more information: www.education.qld.gov.au/everydaycounts

Our school attendance target for each student is 92%. Last year our attendance was only at 89.2%. I know we can do better in 2023.

Absenteeism

If your child is away please report the absence on QParents. Alternatively, you can contact the office by phone 54395111, or send a text to 0427 949 558.

Absentee information is required for legal and audit purposes. By law we are required to contact any family whose child is absent without an explanation. After 10 days we are obligated to report lengthy absenteeism to authorities. Please understand that this is required in all state schools.

End of the Day

The school day officially finishes at 3:00pm. Parents are encouraged to come into the school grounds and wait in the Undercover Area for their students. There is no teacher supervision after 3:00pm (with exception to bus students). KidSpace OSHC might be an option which you might like to consider. Fees are from $2.70 and include all meals, classroom drop-off and pick-up and activities run by qualified educators. Please contact Jason on 0411 800 208.

Prep/Year1 News

Welcome to Prep/Year 1!

The Prep/One class have had a fabulous start to the year.

The Prep students have settled into school very well and have enjoyed making lots of new friends.

The Year One students have been great role models and have helped to show the Preps and new students all our school routines and how we do things like maths games and language rotations.

We finished off our first week of school with a Teddy Bear 's picnic down at the library. Each child brought a teddy to school for the day and we had a lovely picnic lunch and walk around our school gardens. All the children were very happy to see the school chooks and feed them our scraps.

We have also read the Story - " Where is the Green Sheep" by Mem Fox, and followed some clues around the school to see if we could find the Green Sheep. Where was the Green Sheep? Fast asleep in the teacher's chair!

The Year One students have finished off week 2 of school with some great writing about a sheep after reading this story and the Prep students had lots of fun thinking of new characters for the story!

Year 2/3 News

Welcome families of 2/3

It has been lovely to meet so many of you already. I am enjoying taking these first few weeks of the year to really get to know your students.

I’ve just returned from 5 years in Cape York and really enjoy working and living in a small community. You’ll start to see me around town as I’m renovating a house right here in Peachester.

2/3 students have had a very busy start to the 2023 year, learning new routines and getting to know each other and a new teacher.

I feel very welcomed by the Peachester community and look forward to a fantastic year ahead 😊

Year 3/4 News

We have had a great start to 2023 in year 3/4.

All students are settling in well and getting used to the new routines. It has been really fun getting to know your student and they have enjoyed building a new classroom as a group.

We will be focusing on the routine around reading this year. It has been fantastic to see so many signed reading folders each morning. We have even hit a high of 92%!

I am looking forward to going over this and other curriculum details in more detail at the information afternoon next Wednesday.

Looking forward to seeing you all then😊

Year 5/6 News

What a busy two weeks it has been, settling into the classroom and into new routines.

We have looked at the Australian, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander flags and also looked a little at Chinese New Year. We used the Year of the Rabbit image to identify warm and cool colours.

We are looking at fantasy novels this term. In particular, Deltora Quest - The Forests of Silence, where we have met Jarred and Endon and the magical belt of Deltora. We have used the description in the book, along with our visualising and drawing skills, to come up with our own interpretations.
