Principal's Message

Dear Parents,Carers & Community,

Welcome back to Concord Public School and a special welcome to the families who have joined us this year. I am sure the very friendly school community will ensure that you quickly become part of this wonderful school.

I met again with Ms Vountoulas last week and her recovery is on track for her return on Monday March 8. I know that she is really keen to get back to see you all.

We welcomed back Ms Coco and Mr McGee and Ms Chen, Mrs Darlow and Mrs Slattery have joined out staff. They are very impressed with the school and the students.

I would like to take this opportunity to share a few reminders with you.

Please use the gate near the hall to enter the school and remember not to park across private driveways.

Office hours are from 8.30am – 3.30pm. Please contact the school during these hours.

Before and after school supervision

School hours are from 9am to 3pm. The bell goes at 9am. Please ensure that your children are at school on time. Students should be collected at 3pm.  Everyone should leave the school grounds as quickly as possible.

Students late to school should be accompanied by a parent or caregiver to the front office so their arrival time can be recorded. Students are late once the classes have gone inside. Please be aware that children are required by law to attend school between our opening hours of 9 am and 3 pm. Reasons for being repeatedly late such as “slept in” or “no parking/ too much traffic” do not have to be accepted by the school. Students should only be picked up early in exceptional circumstances.

For additional information about school attendance please read the Compulsory School Attendance notice.

Students should not be in the playground before 8.30am as supervision begins at 8.30am unless attending a school supervised activity e.g. choir. Parents will be contacted if students are left before 8.30am.

Students going to after school care are to go directly to their meeting area. Students going to COOSH are to remain in the care and supervision of the COOSH.

Parents are reminded that they are not to approach other children to discuss any issues or concerns they may have with the child or the child’s family. Please speak to the class teacher or for serious issues make an appointment with Mrs Coco K-2 and Mrs Vermiglio and Mrs Soteriou 3-6.

Allergy Reminder A number of students at CPS have severe allergies resulting in a condition known as anaphylaxis. The severity and range of symptoms varies from person to person. Please note that, while the school can never be considered a nut-free zone and nut products are not banned in the school, we do ask for parents’ co-operation in providing alternative food products for their children. For some affected children even the slightest contact with nuts or nut products or other allergic foods can result in a life-threatening reaction.

We also ask that you discuss with your children the importance of always washing hands before and after eating and not sharing their food with others. Parents, when you send in cakes and other party food please check packaging to ensure that, as much as possible, they are nut free.

If your child has anaphylaxis it is a mandatory requirement for all schools to meet with the family to prepare a medical action plan. Please ring the school for an immediate appointment if this applies to one of your children.

All student health concerns should be reported to the school. Mrs Annetta very capably oversees all student medical conditions. Please note that we can only administer prescribed medications. Please ensure that medications left at school are up to date. We request that when you take your child to the doctor that you ask for medications that can be taken outside of school hours.

From the RMS

Use the flyer included in this newsletter and this information to refresh your understanding of safety rules near schools.

Please remember not to park across driveways

Drop-off and pick-up by car

Make sure your children are in appropriate child car seats that are fitted and used correctly.

Stick to the 40km/h speed limit in a school zone as children are about and can be unpredictable.

Look out for buses pulling out – watch for wig-wag lights.

Always park and turn legally around schools and avoid dangerous manoeuvres like U-turns and three-point turns.

Always give way to pedestrians, especially when entering and leaving driveways.

Drop the kids off and pick them up on the school side of the road in your school's designated drop-off and pick-up area. Calling out to them from across the road is dangerous because they may run to you without checking traffic.

It's safest for the kids to get out of the car on the kerb side of the road to be away from passing traffic

Walking together to and from school

Plan your trip to school so you are using pedestrian crossing areas where possible.

Always hold your child's hand up until the age of eight. Young children need your help to spot danger like vehicles coming out of driveways. They can also be easily distracted and wander into traffic.

Drop off and pick up your child near the school gate and avoid calling them from across the road. Talk to your children about Stop, Look, Listen and Think every time they cross the road:

Stop one step back from the kerb

Look continuously both ways

Listen for the sounds of approaching traffic

Think whether it is safe to cross and keep checking until safely across

Your child's safety depends on you

Young children can learn these safe pedestrian habits from you and use them when they are old enough to travel alone.

Thank you for supporting our students, your children, in our efforts to keep everyone safe.

From the Office

Entering onto the School Grounds During School Hours

Please ensure that you come into the office, if you need to give something to your child, or if they have forgotten to bring something to school. The office staff are more than happy to pass the item on.

If you need to see your child or pass on a message to them, the office staff can help with that too. We encourage parents to allow us to pass on messages during break times, so that your child's learning is not interrupted. All visitors must sign-in at the office and wear a visitor's sticker. This is to ensure the wellbeing and safety of all.

Payment

When making a payment online you can only pay up to 3 DAYS before the due date of the payment. This is due to online transactions taking 48 hours to process.

Other payment methods such as cash or cheque can also be sent to the front office and placed in the blue box labelled “School Post”.

Please note that we do not accept online payment for uniform or canteen orders. Please see the uniform or canteen order  form for payment details.

Permission Notes

If you have more than one child we need to have a note for each child, not all on one note please.

Change of Contact/Address details

Please inform the office immediately if you have changed your contact or address details, so we can contact you in case of an emergency.

Bike Licence

Please be aware that all children who ride a bike or scooter to school and keep it on the school grounds require to have a Bike/Scooter Licence. This licence is only issued to children in years 5 and 6, and children from K-4 who are accompanied by an adult. Please see Mrs Vermiglio or the office for details .

Concord Public School Band

P & C

From the President

G'day everyone

Welcome back to the school year and on behalf of the P&C we hope everything has proceeded to your plans for the start of the school year and that your kids are settling back in. (and you get to exhale - in the nicest possible way). We would like to extend a warm welcome to our new parents especially. Whether you are new to our school with Kindy or your kids are going into later year classes it can always be a bit daunting. But, just let me confirm that the Educational, Support Staff and Executive at Concord are very experienced, empathetic, friendly and professional. They are engaged in your kids learning and the larger school community which extends to their involvement with your P&C.

It is this relationship between Parents/Carers and the school body which enables us to build community and support for each other, inturn achieving positive outcomes for all students through events and projects. At the end of last year a raft of projects and events were approved for institution across this year.

Some of the projects we will be funding in first term (dependent on time frames of the school) are:

Burwood Rd Turfed Area

Weeding, coring, and top-dressing action.

Outstanding items associated with the Multi Sport Court

Fixed Hoops and equipment associated with outstanding scoped items.

21st century classroom workspace and technology upgrade

Purchase, installation and training on Promethian Screens for nominated classrooms. Upgrade of furniture etc to create more flexible and engaging class spaces

Wireless Connectivity in tandem with iPad upgrade

Upgrade WiFi routers and IP addresses to allow for whole of classroom interactive learning. Upgrade of ipads to reflect ongoing needs.

These are big items and are exciting for us all.

Other items may come about and we are flexible to facilitate these as they come to hand and are voted upon in line with due process.

Our events for term one start soon so get ready

Look out for a fridge calendar coming home soon with events highlighted and important dates.

Walkathon BBQ- Friday 13th March

To coincide with, and as an excellent warm up to the schools cross country event, we will be holding, in conjunction with the school, a walkathon which follows the cross country course. This will be held on the 13th March and sits snuggly in the schools sports curriculum.

It will be an opportunity for you to spend the afternoon with your kids, encouraging and participating with them. Other activities will also be part of the afternoon and we will need parent volunteers to help out, to help teachers to run games and be marshalls also. It also provides an opportunity to mix and build community with other parents while relaxing in a picnic style atmosphere. The school will be sending out more info soon, with funds raised going toward joint school and P&C projects.

Afterwards we will be holding a big bbq with drinks, ice blocks and the like available. It would be ideal if we all celebrated our kids achievement for the afternoon and join in with a meal or snack together, where we can again sit down and commune with others in the school community. Please be on the look out for further advertising and information that will be available in the next few weeks. We look forward to your participation.

Movie Event- Sunday 29th March 3.30pm

On the 29th March is another cracker. A Sunday afternoon at the movies. The movie is "Trolls World Tour" at Rhodes Cinema. Please put it in your Diary and let Aunties, Uncles, Grandparents and carers know. It will be a great community gathering. Lookout for our advertising for the event. Tickets will be able to be puchased via QuikCliq and must be purchased by 14th March. We need to have final numbers to the Cinema by then. Pre paid snack package purchases will also be available. All profit will go toward a nominated school project to be decided. Please get behind this great afternoon out for the family.

Working Bee- Saturday 7th March 8am to 3pm List of jobs will be listed prior to the day with all encouraged to spend at least a little time to help out. Depending on numbers a BBQ lunch may be provided.

Wireless Connectivity

Over the school holidays, Mr Crisafulli co-ordinated with the NSW Department of Education IT specialists, an upgrade to the school's wireless internet infrastructure. This will allow for a whole classroom interactive learning experience not available within the school previously. The P&C helped the school and dedicated the funds to facilitate this outcome. We are pleased that it is about to be commissioned and we all owe a large amount of gratitude to Mr Crisafulli for his huge efforts before and during the holidays along with his contacts to make this happen. I am sure the students will certainly reflect the benefits that this interactive learning can deliver. Thanks Mr Cris.

That is it for now. Catch up in the playground soon.

Mal

PS On a personal note, thank you for your support and condolences with the recent loss of my mum. She did enjoy coming to school events.
