Principal's Report

Tuesday 14th February 2023

Hello Everyone,

This week marks a significant milestone in the history of the school. On Thursday we commemorate 40 years since the Ash Wednesday fires and the loss of the original school. Mount Macedon Primary School was built in 1858 and had a school population of approximately 15 students.  Our school number 0415 reflects the fact that we were the 415th school built in Victoria. There are now more than 1500 government schools in the State. In 1983 the school was celebrating its 125th birthday. The principal was a young John Ewels (who now runs our bike education program). A school council meeting was held at the school that night and some of the councilors decided to sit outside for a drink after the meeting. They quickly realised that the situation was not good, and left to head home to their families. On that day and night, in Victoria, there were 180 fires, 75 lives lost and 2545 homes destroyed, as well as the original MMPS building. You will see in the photos that the school bell that sits proudly out the front of our school, survived and remains a symbol of our past history. Our Grade 6 students ring the bell to remind us of their past history but also to indicate hope and looking forward.

I love the school building that replaced the old school. It is well designed and light and airy. It has stood the test of time over the past 40 years, as it functions really well and is still attractive. Things have changed a lot over the past 40 years – we are more educated about fire risks and management, technology has improved, buildings now have fire ratings, weather is tracked more consistently and local fire brigades are now equipped with better vehicles and equipment. Although it has been a wet year, it is important to reflect on this day and think about your own fire plan.

What a wonderful day we had at the swimming sports on Friday. Thanks so much to everyone who came along to cheer and help out on the day. We could not do it without you. Thanks also to Hayley Saunders and the staff who made sure that the day ran smoothly. Most of all, congratulations to all of the students. They participated with such enthusiasm. The House winners will be announced at assembly on Friday. We are hoping to take advantage of the weather at this time of year and will be holding our athletics day in March!

This Friday is our WELCOME BBQ. This is always a wonderful, relaxed event, so please come along for a couple of hours and meet other parents. This is event is run by our Friends of the School group. They work hard to not only raise money for the school (this is a free event) but also to build a strong cohesive community group. We would love to see you there.

You may notice that we have some building work commencing in the school grounds. The fernery has been cleared out (thanks to my husband Robert) and I have employed a contractor to build an outdoor reading room around the existing ferns. This will provide a quiet space for students who would like to take a break from the hustle and bustle of the playground. This should take about a week.

Japanese lessons started in the school last week. I spoke to all of the classes about it and they all enjoyed their lesson.

I have been lucky enough over the last week to teach in every classroom. The school seems very calm and settled and I’m so proud of the attitudes of the students, who are engaging in their learning and working collaboratively together. The ethos in the school is wonderful.

I really enjoyed working in the F/1 class and learning more about our new students. They have settled in well and seem to be thoroughly enjoying learning new things. I think that the presence of the grade one students in the class has helped them adapt quickly to the new routines and expectations of school.

This has been a long newsletter – sorry – lots of things happening in the school!!

Have a wonderful week.

Kind Regards,

Trish

From the Office

Hello Everyone,

We hope that you are all settling back into school routine for Term 1 2023! So far it has been a great start to the year, and everyone seems to be happy and excited to be back.

Just a few notices and reminders for this week:

Working With Childrens Check

Throughout the year we are fortunate to have many volunteers for various activities.  As a formality we must remind all families of the Working with Childrens Check requirements.

As per Department of Education and school policy visitors and volunteers working with our children must hold a valid Working with Childrens Check card prior to attending the school.  Please refer to the Volunteer Policy on the school website for more information.

If you currently hold a WWCC card, please ensure you have added Mount Macedon Primary School as a volunteer organisation (scroll down the bottom or the page to enter up to 4 organisations).  Once the school is added to your WWCC profile, an official letter from the Department of Justice confirming your registration will be mailed to the school.

MMPS Update by School Reporter Harriet

Hi everyone, what a week it has been!

During the week we had a little visitor, Mimi, Miss Sauders’ pet dog. She was excitingly sniffing everyone as if we smelled of treats at lunch. She was a really adorable pom pom with legs that could make your heart melt when you saw her (but we still love and miss Rufus).

On Friday we had our swimming carnival at the public outdoor pool in Woodend. Everyone had a great time. We had great weather and a lot of parents came and watched as well as helped.  Many parents stood at the ends of the pool and handed out ribbons and coloured wrist bands.

Don’t forget the Welcome BBQ is on this Friday, the 17th of February, starting at 5:30 going to 7:30. The Welcome BBQ is an event organised by FOS (Friends of the school)  for all the families at the school - everyone is invited to come and enjoy themselves and get to know some new people. Kids can run around and play while the adults talk with their friends.

Just a note about our school sponsored outside school hours care.

I myself and my siblings use this program and we can vouch for its educational, fun and supportive care it provides.

So school families, grab an enrolment form from the office, OSCH or the school website, You just never know if you’ll need to use this service at any time. Now that parents are heading back to their workplaces you may just need this wonderful program.

Music at MMPS

Music is back!

Today we started back in the music room with Grade 5/6 and Grade 2/3, with the other classes to follow throughout the week.

We talked about which musical instruments we know and the difference between beat and rhythm. We clapped along with certain beats and rhythms and found out how hard it is to keep a steady beat without getting faster and faster.

The Grade 5/6 class worked on their own clapping skits.  This required them to be synchronised in keeping a beat and doing their own actions. They had 15 minutes to come up with their routines and the results were fantastic.

The Grade 2/3 class learnt the song 'Down by the Bay' and came up with funny new lyrics for each verse.

We also had time for a dance and to come up with some suggestions about what we want to learn in music this year. We are looking forward to a great year in music!

Digital Technology at MMPS

We had an action-packed start to Digital Tech last week. Our new Preps pulled apart a laptop to learn all about how it works, and then, as I am such a generous guy, I gave them all their own laptops! (sure, they had to put them together, and they were made of paper, but you gotta' start somewhere).

Our junior students started their first big coding project and made a video game character move on the screen.

Our middle years' students learnt all about creating multitrack digital music recordings using loops and samples, which you may hear soon (coming to a morning school bell near you)

And finally, our senior students put on their engineering hats to do some 3D modelling to print out (and compete) in a Rocket showdown.

Check it all out in the image below, and (because everyone loves a good slow-mo) click the video link to see our rocket test flight...

Our New Outdoor Reading Area

We are in the process of constructing an exciting new space for our students! Very soon they will be able to enjoy a new outdoor reading area, which was previously a small garden area. The area has been cleaned out to make way for some decking and a seating area surrounded by lovely fernery. We can't wait until it is constructed and enjoyed by everyone, and think it is a great way to utilise our outdoor spaces. Have a look below for some before and "in progress" pics!

Lunch Orders

Lunch Orders from Red Door cafe in Macedon will continue on a Wednesday and Friday. In the coming weeks we will be moving to an online system for ordering, however for the time being please continue to use the cash and paper bag system as per last year. Please find below the menu and orders instructions.

Hats in Term 1, 2023

Just a reminder to ensure that students have their hats to wear at school during recess and lunchtimes, as well as any other outdoor activities they may be participating in. It is important that we are all being sun smart and ensuring our children are protected from the harmful UV light that is at it's highest peak during the months of August to April, where UV index levels regularly reach 3 or above. Please also remember to name your children's hats as they quite often are lost, misplaced or left in the playground and it is handy to know who the hat belongs to! Spotted on the grounds were some of our students wearing their hats today.

Guitar Lessons 2023

Aaron Moar has been teaching guitar students at Mount Macedon Primary School for the last 8 years. He is keen to meet some new students who are interested in learning how to play, and continue working with current students for 2023. Aaron is a qualified teacher and has been teaching guitar for over 15 years. He conducts group lessons at the school, and teaches students of all levels and classes. His lessons are fun and interactive, where the students learn to play both modern and traditional tunes to practise their skills and technique. If you would like to enquire about guitar lessons for your child, please contact Aaron on 0438 177 764 or email: aaronmoar@infinitesound.com.au or see flyer below.

Ranges Music Network

The Ranges Music Network is very excited to be bigger and better at Mount Macedon Primary this year!  We have some exciting term-based performance and project activities planned in addition to our Group and Individual programs.

We'd also like 2023 to be the year of the bands -- with Classic Rock Band and Drum Squad taking the stage from 3:40-4:20pm after school each Wednesday.  If you are interested in learning an instrument while playing in the band or building on the technique and musicality you're developing in your group and individual lesson we'd love to have you.
