Term 3 Week 1

Message from the Principal

Welcome to Term 3!

I hope that everyone enjoyed some of that lovely sunshine we saw during the holidays. We have returned to yet again more rain and cold weather. This of course increases the risk of illness and I ask that we all follow the updated COVID guidelines below to help protect ourselves and all of the children in our school. We will be making a concerted effort for the first 4 weeks in the hope that we will be able to invite you all to join in with us for school events again from week 5.

STAFFING NEWS: I would like to announce that our new Deputy Principal - Wellbeing is Jayne Emms and that our new Relieving Assistant Principal and Aboriginal Education Coordinator is John Santos. I congratulate them both and acknowledge the wealth of knowledge and highly developed skills that they both bring to these positions. I also congratulate Miss Blackwell, who will take up the classroom teacher position in the Stingray classroom Mon - Thurs, Miss Emms will remain in Stingray on Fridays. There will be one final staffing adjustment to announce once we have filled Miss Blackwell's RFF position. This term we will also be conducting a merit selection process for an additional assistant principal position announced by the Department of Education to start in Term 1 2023.

NAIDOC WEEK: NAIDOC Week falls in the first week of the school holidays. Our school chose to celebrate this week. We started the week with an assembly where Aboriginal dance and Multicultural speeches featured. It was so beautiful to have all of the students in the hall together for the very first time this year and to see that the students still remembered that assembly is a place to show respect, patience and kindness as we come together in celebration. A great effort by everyone, well done! The rest of the week has been filled with a variety of activities for all students to learn about and embrace the importance of NAIDOC. This year's theme is Get Up, Stand Up, Show Up!! Something that I believe we all do very well.

EDUCATION WEEK: We have decided that Education Week is not quite right unless we can fully include parents and the community to celebrate with us. For this reason, we have moved Education Week to week 5 and hope that you can join us. Week 5 is also Science Week, so we will be using this as our focus for the activities and celebrations. More information will be provided soon, but we can't wait to be able to invite you to attend.

As Mr Pritchard embarks on his new adventure as Deputy Principal at Koonawarra Public School for the remainder of 2022, staff, students and community quickly put together a brief farewell at the end of last term. Whilst unfortunately we couldn't invite community to join our assembly last term due to COVID restrictions, it was lovely to see so many of our community come together at the school bell and wish Mr P all the best for his new role. Here is the video that was shared with Mr P at the assembly. We hope you enjoy watching some of the memories and well wishes.

NAIDOC Week

NAIDOC week is celebrated across Australia during the first week of July. We were on holidays during the first week of July, so we have held our NAIDOC week celebrations this week at school.

Each year, a theme is chosen to reflect the important issues and events for NAIDOC Week. This year’s theme is Get Up! Stand Up! Show Up! It encourages everyone to champion change, while at the same time celebrating those who have already driven change for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities and people.

This week the students and teachers and have participated in a variety of activities throughout the week. We kicked off the week with our NAIDOC assembly on Tuesday. The assembly was led by some of students in Stage 3. The Towradgi Stingray Dance Group performed and finished with a thunderous applause from the whole assembly. We finished the assembly with some speeches that made us all think about how we can Get up! Stand up! And Show up! Throughout the week, students also participated in Yarning Circles, explored Dreamtime Stories with their peers, and participated in a range of Indigenous games!

Corrimal High – Year 5’s Excursion to Try High School for a Day

June 21st was the date of our try high school for a day. I had arrived at 8:50am just in time for the amazing performance from the Illawarra Southeast Arts Ensemble. There were dancers, and lots of great songs by the amazing band. Their performance went for over one hour. My favourite part was when they picked students from the audience to come up and join in.

Next, we had a quick welcome ceremony for all of the primary schools, and they told us what we would be doing today. Then we had a half and hour recess, and I had my apple and played handball with Abdullah and lots of other students from other schools.

After that we went and got into some high school lessons. First, we had a Physical Education lesson. We played a new game called Mat Ball. It is where we had lots of balls and two people on opposite team’s mat. Everyone else had to throw the ball to you (if you were the person on the mat). If your teammate caught the ball on the full you go to also go onto the mat. The winning team was the first team to get all players onto the mat.

Then we went to language class to learn a little bit of Mandarin. Mandarin is the most spoken language in the world. We learnt how to say some words and then the teacher would ask us a question in Mandarin, and we had to answer in Mandarin. He asked us what our name was and then asked us a few hard questions about Chinese culture.

The next room that we went too was the Science class. It was more of an actual lesson as we did an experiment with a candle. It was very interesting learning about what different types of science there is in high school.

At lunch we ate all of our food, and I played a big game of handball with at least 20 kids from all of the other schools. After lunch we went over to maths class. We had some difficult mathematical problems to solve. The teacher treated it like an escape room, and we were locked in there until we solved the maths problems. We had to solve problems like how many squares were visible in a picture.

Finally, we did a tour around the brand new industrial arts building with some Year 11 leaders. We saw the phoenix artwork that was a gift from a man who was a former student back in 1969 after the fire. We also saw many new classrooms and project rooms within the building.

Then it was time for one last game once all the other schools had left. We made a circle and had a ball and we threw it around saying everyone’s name. We tried to increase the number of balls that were being thrown around at once, but it was very messy and confusing.

The Science Centre Recount

It was the 16th of June. It was exactly 11.30pm when Towradgi kids were lining up excitedly for our excursion to the Science Centre.

Firstly, we started to walk out of the gate and on the footpath. While we were walking, we were waving at the people in the cars to see if they beep or wave. We were passing the construction workers and one of the workers was in a big vehicle and he beeped three times. It sounded like the beep from a cartoon which was funny.

After a long walk we finally arrived at the Science Centre and a lady in a brown coat opened the gate and took us inside. There were two more people inside named Macey and Toby. Then the teachers called our names to see if we were here and everyone was here. We then got split. The Year 5’s with the Year 6’s and the Year 3’s with the Year 4’s.

Thirdly we went to the STEM zone, and we had Macey. She told us what to do and we had to get into groups and build a tower with the material in the box. Then when you were done it went on the wobble board against another teams. Then the wobble board started to wobble and the last tower standing won. It was fun.

Then we went downstairs to the Planetarium and a lady called Panse was telling us about the planets. When you looked up, you could see shining stars, planets, the Milky Way and many more interesting things. We learnt so much about them.

Next, we went to the shop and the activities downstairs and upstairs. We first went to the gift shop and there was slime, slinkies, dinosaurs, dinosaur pictures and lots more. At the activity section there was a big tube and air coming out. There were parashooting men (toys). So, we put the men in the tube, and it flew up. We were trying to get it to the second floor, but it didn’t. There was also a giant elephant that we could control on the second floor. There was also a secret room and, in the room, you could draw on the wall with light which was amazing.

Lastly the teachers gathered us up and the staff showed us to a room which looked like a theatre. We all sat down, and Toby welcomed us and said, “This is a liquid nitrogen show”. Toby showed us the liquid nitrogen. It was in a metal bottle and gas was pouring out of it. But the cool thing was when he poured it on the floor it evaporated instantly and the gas looked like when you throw a rock into a pond, then straight away disintegrating into the floor. It was so cool. Then he did experiments on different objects like a balloon, bouncy ball and then the bottle. Firstly, he poured liquid nitrogen on the balloon and the balloon shrunk. When he warmed it up it got bigger. Secondly, he put the bouncy ball in the liquid nitrogen and then he got it out and bounced it. But it did not bounce. But when he warmed it up, it was bouncy. Lastly, he put liquid nitrogen in the bottle and a balloon on top, before he did that he told us to block our ears, then we all blocked our ears and it made an enormous POP!!! It was so loud I almost screamed.

After that we all took our belongings and walked back to school. By the time we got back it was home time, so we grabbed our bag and said goodbye.

Wheelie's Rewards Day

We celebrated the end of Term 2 by squeezing in our Wheelie's Rewards Day just before the rain came! Students enjoyed bringing their bikes, scooters, skates and remote control cars to school for a session on wheels! Students should be congratulated on their safe and respectful behaviour on the track, as well as their continued efforts during the school term. It is always great to see all of our students trying their personal best to connect, succeed and thrive!
