Issue 15 - Term 3, Week 8 - Thursday 8 September 2022

A Message from the Principal

Welcome to week 8! I have certainly been feeling the buzz of excitement right across our community as we have been so fortunate to have so many events with our families onsite. The interactions between our teachers, students and families has been inspirational and we are loving every minute of it!

Thank you for being passionately involved in our school. There are more events planned this term, so stay tuned! We hope to see you with us soon.

Book Parade

Thank you to Mrs Stanley who choreographed the very best book parade I have ever had the pleasure of being involved in. We had nearly all students and all teachers take an active part in the day, dressing up and celebrating a love of literature.

Thank you to the many family members who attended on the day. We had aunties, uncles, grandparents, siblings… it was incredible, and it meant so much to us all to have you up here with us.

The Fathering Project

The Fathering Project was founded in 2013, by Professor Bruce Robinson in Western Australia, with the aim of supporting fathers, and father figures, to be the best parent they can be so their children can thrive. The Fathering Project educates, connects and mobilises fathers and families to create brighter futures for children. They do this with research-based prevention and early intervention programs and resources that engage, inform, inspire, equip and support fathers, families, schools, corporates and community-based organisations. The Fathering Project helps dads to be the best dads they can be, for themselves, their children and their families.

Our purpose for partnering with the Fathering Project is to strengthen father-child relationships and build stronger connections between families, schools and communities. Children with engaged fathers have better academic, social and emotional outcomes, and Dads benefit from being part of a supportive peer-to-peer environment that improves confidence, skills and commitment. Research shows that schools that specifically target fathers will see better outcomes for students.

When fathers participate in school activities, meetings and events, children enjoy school more, are less likely to have behaviour issues and are more likely to participate in extracurricular activities. Children are also more likely to engage more in school and perform better academically.

We are thrilled to be able to facilitate this at Hammondville Public School, under the passionate eye of our Assistant Principal, Mr Mark Betts.

If you’d like to join our dads group and get involved in the conversation, please click here https://portal.thefatheringproject.org/dads-group/hammondville-public-school/

Thank you to the many dads who have already joined our group and for those who came to get involved in the conversation last Friday.

Open Classrooms

Thank you to the many, many faces we welcomes into our school and our classrooms on Wednesday for Open Classrooms and for Reading on the Rug. It was an absolute joy to see our families engage in their child’s classroom and learning; certainly, something that hasn’t been able to happen for what feels like many years.

Kindergarten were having a great time with some maths games and playing cooperatively in their classrooms.

Stage 1 had a wonderful time taking their loved ones around their learning spaces and showing them how we use them safely and respectfully. It was great to see some dads get involved in the soccer game, too!

Stage 2 was a buzz of activity upstairs and downstairs, showing loved ones what they are most proud of.

Stage 3 were working hard in their classrooms, sharing their learning with their families and asking them to get involved as well. 5/6 Indigo were participating in their sport program with Mr Boardman, which was great for parents to see.

After a busy hour, we all gathered on our oval with picnic rugs and our favourite stories to relax and enjoy the sunshine and each other’s company with a great book.

Thank you to those who were able to join us today. It was great to have you here. Don’t stay away too long.

PSSA Grand Finals

Good luck to our PSSA teams who are competing in the grand finals this week!

Stage 3 Canberra Camp

In week 6 this term, 109 Stage 3 students and 8 staff members travelled to the nation’s capital Canberra for an educational excursion visiting numerous landmarks which aligned with our History unit from Semester 1 called Australia as a Nation. Our unit of work looked at democracy and citizenship in Australia and specifically looked at each level of government, how voting works and how our nation has developed over time.

On the first day students visited ANZAC parade looking at memorials and statues to our armed forces, the National Museum covering unique Australian artefacts, Parliament House mock parliament, the House of Representatives and Senate, and a drive past visit of other nations Embassies, High Commissions and the Prime Minister’s Canberra residence The Lodge.

On Day 2 students visited Old Parliament House and learned how an election is run and how to vote, Questacon- The National Science and Technology Centre and the Australian Institute of Sport for fun physical activities.

The final day of camp involved travelling to Corin Forest and participating in 2 hours of guided snow play before we headed back to school.

All students showed excellent behaviour and respect and were model students representing our school. A big thank you to all of the Stage 3 staff Mr Hughes, Ms O’Connor, Mrs Webb, Mr Ramsay, Mrs Murray, Mrs Potts and Mrs Cadden who attended, our SAS staff for support and organisation at school and to our parents and carers for funding the excursion and giving our students an amazing opportunity and learning experience.

Parliament and Civics Education Rebate (PACER)

Students from Stage 3 at Hammondville Public School have recently undertaken, an education tour of the national capital. Students were given the opportunity to participate in a variety of educational programs with a focus on Australia’s history, culture, heritage and democracy.

The Australian Government recognises the importance of all young Australians being able to visit the national capital as part of their Civics and Citizenship education. To assist families in meeting the cost of the excursion the Australian Government is contributing funding of $30 per student under the Parliament and Civics Education Rebate program towards those costs. The rebate is paid directly to the school upon completion of the excursion and was credited to each student who attended the Canberra Camp this term.
