Principal's Report

Farewell to Barb

It is with great sadness that we will be farewelling our wonderful Barb Maddrell as she retires at the end of this term, after a fantastic innings of 26 years with the Dept of Education.

Barb joined our office in 2016 and quickly became an irreplaceable and much-loved part of the team. She has inspired us all with her kindness and warmth for the students; her outstanding memory and wealth of knowledge over a broad range of topics, from the general to the obscure; her ability to fix pretty much any mechanical/technical item that lands on her desk, her patience and know-how knows no bounds. Barb is a wonderful cook and has shared her culinary delights with the office staff on a regular basis; she is very creative and one year knitted all of the admin team scarves; Barb is smart, funny, upbeat and goes out of her way to help those around her, whether it be students, staff, parents or the wider community. She goes above and beyond what is required of her and has left a lasting impression on us all.

We thank you for everything you have contributed to making Harbord PS the wonderful environment that it is and we wish you every possible happiness in your retirement Barb.  You will be sorely missed.

Lost Property

Recently, when our K-2 and 3-6 lost property was sorted there were 85 jumpers, jackets and a few hats with no names. Items of clothing are expensive so to find that many unnamed is a shame. Please remember to mark your child’s clothes (particularly jumpers and hats) with his/her first name and surname so they can easily be returned. If your child loses an item, please ask them to go to lost property with a friend the following day. Currently our amazing office staff are spending far too much of their precious time sorting through unclaimed lost property. Please note that any items without names are given to our 2nd hand uniform shop to re -sell.

Uniforms

Just a reminder that summer uniform is only worn terms 1and 4 and winter uniform is worn for terms 2 & 3. This is regardless of the weather and is common practice in all schools. Please also ensure that trainers are not worn with the winter uniform as only black leather shoes should be worn, unless it is your child’s sports day. Thanks for your assistance in keeping our students looking smart so we can all be proud of the students of Harbord Public School.

Jersey Day

Last Friday was National Jersey Day. This was an opportunity for our staff to raise awareness for The Organ and Tissue Awareness Authority. Thanks to Mrs Iacovitti for organising this initiative for us.

Kindergarten Enrolments

Unfortunately, we have had to suspend all face to face school tours due to COVID 19 restrictions. Please contact the school office to get your name on our virtual tour list and an email will be sent home. At this stage, kindergarten orientation is also on hold. We are in the process of planning a remote package if the restrictions are still in place.

A reminder that enrolments are open for Kindergarten in 2021. Please contact the office to be sent an enrolment form and return it to us at your earliest convenience with your 100 point residential address check. If you have a sibling already at this school, it is important that you, too, enrol your child for 2021 as soon as possible, so that we have an accurate idea of student numbers. Student numbers directly influence and affect our staffing allocation, so it is helpful to know our enrolment for 2021 as early as possible.

Bike Safety

Parents, we need your help.  At Harbord, we are keen to encourage children to ride their bikes to school, however, this needs to be done safely.  As part of our PDH curriculum we teach road and bike safety in class.  It is also important that you remind your children to stay safe while riding.  Recently, teachers and members of the community have seen Harbord students riding on the road and crossing the road on bikes in a dangerous manner.  Please help us keep our students safe by discussing with them how to ride safely around roads.

I am currently working with the P&C to revise our riding to school policy and to help educate our students and families about bike safety.  In the meantime, please refer to this publication from the Department of Education.

Band

What a treat it was to witness an impromptu performance of the band this morning.  Under the guidance of Mrs Sandie Rose-Castle, the band have creatively adapted to the new COVID restrictions.  At lines this morning, some students demonstrated their new performance skills with an entertaining recycled instrument percussion piece.  We were so impressed that Mrs Hanlon asked for an encore.

Tell Them from Me (TTfM) Survey Information

There is a parent component of the TTfM survey. We would like as many parents as possible to give feedback around student learning, wellbeing and engagement. This information will be triangulated against student and teacher responses and used to help with our next four year School Improvement Plan (SIP).

Parents can access the survey from the link below. The survey is now open and will close on Friday 23rd October, 2020.

Amazing Handwriting in Year 1

Last week Ava and Lexie came to share their beautiful handwriting. They were practising the correct formation of letters and the different ways to make the ‘or’ sound. We looked at letters that were touching the top and bottom lines and were sloped correctly. They then identified a letter that they could work on to improve. Great effort and reflection girls!

Informative Writing from Kindergarten

All Kindergarten classes have been learning about animals. They have then incorporated facts and information into their writing. Congratulations to Kai and Harvey for their impressive writing about koalas. Keep up the great effort, boys!

Instructional Leadership Team Collaboration

For the past two weeks, Mrs Yates, Miss Wright and myself have had the privilege of working with the Kindergarten team in mathematics. The focus for the two weeks was additive strategies. Students move through the Numeracy Progression using fingers and objects, visualising covered objects in their mind, counting on to add, counting back to take away, to using non-count by one strategies such as doubles, near doubles, friends of ten and bridging to ten.

Students participated in a variety of activities including, friends of ten snap, technology tasks and tens frame activities.  I encourage you to ask your Kindergarten child to teach you one of the activities they completed in the past two weeks.

Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL)

Respect, Responsibility, Personal Best

Over the next few weeks students will revisit the PBL expectations at assembly lines, when walking to and from lines and when moving around the playground. Our aim is to ensure our PBL expectations - Respect, Responsibility and Personal Best are being practised at all times in these areas to ensure safety and efficiency when moving around our school.

Students will revisit discussions about being at lines on time, listening carefully to any messages, walking calmly, respectfully and safely, staying together as a class, and acknowledging other classes around respectfully when moving to and from lines safely. Discussion will also fall around some changes to playground boundaries for Years K-2 and Years 3-6 to ensure Department of Education and Health NSW COVID-19 guidelines continue at our school.

ACTIVE KIDS ARE SMARTER KIDS!

National Walk Safely to School Day (WSTSD) is on Friday 11th September, 2020. Now in its 21st year, it is a campaign and annual event when all primary school children, their parents and carers are encouraged to walk and commute regularly and safely to school. It is a community event seeking to promote road safety, health, public transport and the environment.

Australian children are becoming less active. One substantial contributor is the decline in walking and/or taking public transport to school. Children who are regularly physically active are healthier, perform better academically and are less likely to be obese or overweight, which can lead to the long-term and costly risks of heart disease and diabetes etc.  Walking regularly is the best exercise because you can build it into your daily routine.

The objectives of National Walk Safely to School Day  are:

•  To encourage parents and carers to walk to school with primary school age children

•  To promote the health benefits of walking and create regular walking habits

•  To help children develop vital road crossing skills and ensure children up to the age of 10 years, hold an adult's hand when crossing the road

•  To help children develop the vital road-crossing skills they will need as they become mature pedestrians

•  To reduce car dependency and traffic congestion

•  To reduce the level of air pollution created by motor vehicles

•  To promote the use of public transport.

Sooo ... get involved and wear your craziest socks and sports uniform as you and your family and friends walk to school on Friday 11th September 2020!!!

Calling All Walkers and Runners!!

Harbord Public School is participating in a free virtual running and walking event called the Zaidee’s Run for Life which supports the Zaidee’s Rainbow Foundation.

Zaidee's Rainbow Foundation partners with various organisations and members of the sporting community and hosts events that promote an active lifestyle.

Zaidee Turner passed away suddenly in 2004 when she was 7 years old. At the time of Zaidee’s death the Turner family had been registered Organ and Tissue Donors for 5 years. Zaidee donated her Organs and Tissues at the Royal Children’s Hospital, as were her wishes at the time. From this gift, the lives of seven other people were improved or saved. Zaidee’s parents, Kim and Allan, founded Zaidee’s Rainbow Foundation to raise awareness of the need for increased organ and tissue donor registration in Australia.

Get the family involved this October, each of you can register for the Run for Life event as part of the Harbord Public School Team and select a challenge distance to run or walk over the month of October as well as a fundraising target. Once you start your event, you can add your Km’s manually to your activity page using the instruction sheet attached.

Be sure to share your progress with your friends, family and supporters so they can watch you achieve your target over the month and contribute to your fundraising.

Because this is a virtual event, you can complete your walking or running in your own space and your own time so that you are able to socially distance.

As a team, Harbord Public School is hoping to make a difference to the lives of those in need.

Be sure to join as part of our team using the link: https://www.zaidee.org/join/HarbordPublicSchool9

Band News

All five bands are powering ahead despite the current non-blowing restrictions with a variety of educational music activities.

The students have really embraced the new material and rehearsal format that we have been forced to adopt and are showing great enthusiasm, skill and resilience during this period of learning. It has given us the opportunity to teach important aspects of music and performing that normally couldn’t be explored in such detail.

Next week we will record a ‘virtual performance’ using our recycled percussion pieces to show our band parents the variety of skills honed during these restrictions.

Most band students have been busy creating recycled percussion instruments to perform on.

Public Space Ideas Competition

The Public Space Ideas Competition is a recent initiative of the New South Wales government, established to highlight the value of public space. The pandemic we have encountered in 2020 has certainly shown us the importance of public spaces in supporting the mental, physical and social wellbeing of our community. Over the last few weeks Year 6 students have been working hard to submit applications on behalf of Harbord Public School. Students have given up their lunchtimes to work on this project and done a fantastic job creating revised designs for Harbord Park. They were required to write a 250 word description to support their sketches and worked collaboratively to put their ideas together. The P&C have also submitted an application, so let’s keep our fingers crossed!

Well done to all the students involved, we are very proud of the effort you put into your submissions!

School Photographs

HPS successfully completed the class and individual photo day on Monday, 17th August. A reminder that Sibling Photo day is scheduled for Thursday 17th September, 2020

All students are to wear winter school uniform for the photographs.

Families can order photographs for their child/children in two ways:

  • Using the order envelope that was sent home in Term 1.  (If you no longer have the envelope due to rescheduling and require an envelope you can request a new one at the school office.)
  • Ordering online at www.advancedlife.com.au using our school’s unique 9 digit Online Order Code RY9 HGQ 8LB
  • The photographs will be taken using the prepaid system. Students need to return the order envelopes to their class teacher or place an online order before the scheduled photograph date.

It is our preference that orders be placed online to reduce administration and potential security issues related to the return of cash and envelopes.

    Traffic News

I have contacted Transport NSW to request that they extend the school zone and alter the traffic light sequence outside the school. I am waiting for them to respond.

Remember to walk to school whenever possible to show the council how much we need more pedestrian crossings in the area!

If you notice any lights out in the area, visit https://www.ausgrid.com.au/In-your-community/Our-services/Streetlights#!/map and type in the street to identify at the lights in the street then submit your report. Ausgrid will fix any broken lights. If you think a light is being obscured by an overgrown tree, call the Northern Beaches Council on 1300 434 434 and they will send out the tree-trimmers.

    Harbord Park Upgrade Application

Nick Richter has submitted our entry for the Public Spaces Ideas Competition and it looked great! Hopefully we will hear something soon…

    Bike Policy

Danielle Yates and several parent reps, led by Tati, have been working on putting together an HPS bike policy so that younger students are able to safely ride to school and secure their bikes. This will involve installing more bike racks in the school grounds. Great news for all!

    Zaidee’s Fundraiser

For the month of October, we are asking HPS families to support Zaidee’s Rainbow Foundation by signing up to the virtual walking/running event. Fundraising is not compulsory but it would be great to see as many families as possible clock up a whole lot of kms! Challenge your neighbours or class mates – just get moving and have fun! More information will be sent out before the end of term.
