Scotts Head Public School Newsletter

Term 4 | Week 3 | 27 October 2020

Principals Column

Hello, Giinagay, Hai

Scotts Head Public School students were very fortunate last week to listen to very impressive speeches from the Year 6 candidates for 2020 School Captains and Vice Captains. They all spoke clearly and confidently, presenting imaginative speeches with content that made the choice on who to vote for very challenging. The voting was extremely close and there were many students in contention. We once again thank all our leadership candidates and wish them all the best of luck.

Congratulations to Brylee Eklund and Henry Johnston who are our School Captains and Aiken Medica and Senita Balfour our Vice Captains for 2020.

The high level of public speaking at Scotts Head Public School is a reflection on the way our students and their families have embraced all the various ‘talking and listening' programs that run from Kinder to Year 6 at our school.

Out of School Hours Care (OSHC) Service at Scotts Head Public School

For the last two years we have been working towards opening an OSHC at the school. We have now just got approval to operate an OSHC here on the school grounds in the LLLCC.  We are now looking for an external approved provider to operate an OSHC through an e-tender online process on 27 October, this is the link https://www.tenders.nsw.gov.au/doe/?event=public.rft.show&RFTUUID=D44DCD42-AE2E-C6A6-9FDC46FB0755ED8C.

OSHC is supervised care and recreation for primary school-age children:

  • Before and after school
  • On pupil-free days
  • During school holidays (vacation care)

Typical hours for OSHC services are:

  • Before school commencing from 6.30am till 9.00am
  • After school 3.00pm till 6.00pm
  • Vacation from 7.00am till 6.00pm each week day

How much does before and after school care cost?

Costs of OSHC care are $15 for the morning session and $22 for the afternoon session.  Vacation care programs start from $60.

There are childcare subsidies to reduce the cost of OSHC care available for eligible families.

A survey was sent home yesterday to each child.  Please return as soon as possible so the school can have accurate number of families who would be accessing the service.

We have all fingers crossed the service will be able to get up and running to help solve the issues for families. What do you do when the school day has finished, but your working day hasn't? How do you keep your child busy during the holidays?  The answer for many working parents of school aged children is Out of School Hours Care (OOSH).

Thanks, yaarri yaraang, terima kasih.

This week the students in Year 4/5/6 will have an opportunity to chat with Col Chris Hadfield an Astronaut.

Date:                   Friday 30 October

Time:                   10am – 11am (this includes time for the children to ask questions)

Location:             Digital event

Speakers:           Chris Hadfield, Astronaut

Chris Hadfield is a pioneering Canadian astronaut. Since 1992, he has been an integral part of both the Canadian and American space programs. In December 2012, he embarked on a five-month stay in space, where his Twitter posts about life aboard the International Space Station made him a celebrity.

Hadfield donned a number of different hats, from serving as the voice of mission control to astronauts in space, to working support for shuttle launches at Florida's Kennedy Space Centre and serving as director of operations for NASA at the Yuri Gagarin Cosmonaut Training Centre in Star City, Russia.

Beginning in 2006, Hadfield served for two years as chief of International Space Station Operations at the Johnson Space Centre. In addition to his work on the ground, Hadfield was part of several space missions, including an 11-day assignment at the International Space Station in 2001- his first trip to the station, where he became the first Canadian to leave a spacecraft and freely float in space.
