Term 2, Week 9

Acknowledgement of Country

Pelican Flat Public School acknowledges the traditional lands of the Awabakal people we teach and learn on and pay our respects to elders past, present and emerging.

From the Principal

It is hard to believe that Term 2 concludes next Friday 1 July. It has once again been an extremely busy and rewarding term with countless educational, social and extra-curricular opportunities on our weekly calendar. I would like to offer all of those parents and community members who have worked with us, volunteered their time in the school canteen, assisted with transport to and from events, or supported the Mother’s Day stall and Athletics Carnival, my sincere thanks.  School resumes for all students on Tuesday 19 July. The Pelican Flat PS staff will be involved in a School Development Day on Monday 18 July.

The Pelican Flat PS staff and students have worked tirelessly over the past few months and I thank them for the commitment and dedication they show each day. I know they will enjoy their well-earned break and will come back re-energised for another term.

Help keep us healthy! A number of our families have come down with illnesses over the past few weeks, including Covid19, influenza and vomiting bugs. If your child has any symptoms of any of these things, please DO NOT send them to school. This is a requirement from NSW Health. For further information, please visit: https://education.nsw.gov.au/covid-19/advice-for-families

Symptoms include fever, cough, sore throat, runny nose, shortness of breath, loss of taste, loss of smell, headache, diarrhoea, vomiting, etc. If you are unsure, please phone the school to discuss options prior to sending your child to school. If you require further RATs, please phone the office to arrange.

If you have a child starting school next year or know of families who live in our zoning area, we are currently taking enrolments for Kindergarten 2023. Enrolments can be completed online through the Pelican Flat Public School website.

We are very excited to be able to Share our Space these holidays. We’re open on weekends during the school holidays!

The outdoor facilities at our school will be available to use during the following weekends: Saturday 2 July and Sunday 3 July

Saturday 9 July and Sunday 10 July

Saturday 16 July and Sunday 17 July.

Please visit edu.nsw.link/ShareOurSpace to find out which one of our gates will be open before you visit.

On Thursday 30 June, Teachers across NSW will take industrial action. A letter is attached below for your reference.

Have a wonderful and safe school holidays.

Spelling Years 1 - 6 Week 10

We are using the Sound Waves program for spelling.

These graphemes can be used to make the 'oa' as in boat sound. A grapheme is a letter or a number of letters that represent a sound (phoneme) in a word.

Week 10 list

Many people believe that the ability we are born with is unchangeable. We often hear statements like " I just don't have a math brain" or "I am just not good at writing" etc., implying that our brains do not grow or change with time. But deep down we know this is not true. Recall the last time you wanted to learn a new skill: surfing, juggling, playing an instrument, or learn a new language for that Italy trip you had planned. Having intrinsic motivation probably helped you learn the skill.

The key term here is Neuroplasticity: The brain's ability to reorganize itself by forming new neural connections throughout life. Neuroplasticity allows the neurons (nerve cells) in the brain to compensate for injury and disease and to adjust their activities in response to new situations or to changes in their environment.

Neuroplasticity is the reason our brains do "grow", i.e. form new connections. Our brains are shaped by experiences, learning, and adaptation. Watch the video below for some more information on neuroplasticity and the brain.

Public Speaking

Well done to all students who presented a speech in front of their peers. The staff at Pelican Flat Public School were very impressed with the quality and the effort of each student. Students from each stage braved two adjudicators and spoke proudly again in front of their peers in stage finals last Thursday.

Next term, the following students will attend the Galgabba Public Speaking Competition and the Hunter Public Speaking Competition:

Early Stage 1: Ruby and Bryce

Stage 1: Clare and Archie

Stage 2: Kaley and Isla. Runner up - Ayla

Stage 3: Isis and Balyn. Runner Up - Amy

Runner up students need to continue to practice in case one of the other students are unable to attend.

Well done to these students and every student!

Stage 2 and 3 PSSA Netball gala day

On Wednesday 22 June (week 9), all Stage 2 and Stage 3 students attend a PSSA Netball gala day. It was a wonderful day shared by all students. Their sportpersonship was excellent and we are so proud of all students who had a go! Well done Pelican!

Boccia - Inclusive Sport

Congratulations to our school Boccia team on their amazing results today. William, Ariana and Jasper came first in their pool after 5 games, winning four of their games outright which sent them through to the Hunter final against Lake Munmorah High School. It was a great game but unfortunately we went down 3 ends to 1. We were right in it until the last end.

Everyone had a great time, with sportsmanship a real stand out in every game we played. Thanks to the parents who assisted and cheered on every throw, thanks to the schools we played against and a special thanks to Lake Munmorah High for that great last game and the way you came in and embraced the game against our little school.

Well done everyone and thanks Mr Elliott for assisting our students to be a part of this inclusive sport program.

Star Struck

There were no words that could describe how proud I was as the Principal when I saw the hours of hard work by many staff, teachers and students come together over two shows at Star Struck last week. Our umbrella props certainly came in handy on Saturday evening.

Well done to every performer. You were all absolutely fantastic! Thank you to Miss McClellan who put in so much work behind the scenes, gave up her lunch times and evenings in preparing our students for the big event. We are so lucky to have you!

Bring on 2023 Star Struck!

Calling all volunteers

A reminder to please fill out your canteen volunteers & orana raffle volunteers notes for term 3 and get them back to the office as soon as you can. We know everyone is busy but we would appreciate a small amount of your time.

If you didn't receive a copy of these notes, there's always copies in the office and they are attached here also.

These things can't happen without the help of volunteers and the support of the PFPS community. Volunteering not only benefits our children, but also helps you to create connections, memories and to help make a difference. We are forever grateful for our volunteers at Pelican Flat Public School.

Uniform

If you have any school uniforms your child has grown out of, we would appreciate you donating them to the second hand pool. Not only do the funds we raise from the sale of these items go towards supporting the school, it provides opportunities for families to purchase cheaper uniform items for students.

Opening Hours - Wednesday morning 8:40am to 9:10am (please note there may be a change of day for uniform shop). If you are unable to make this time, please email your order to pelicanpnc@gmail.com and make payment into the P&C bank account (see order form for details). Your order will be filled on the next Friday and given to your child. Our Uniform shop is run by our P&C. Under no circumstances will the school be able to complete uniform orders.

Please be mindful that we do only open and fill orders one day a week. Please be mindful that if the weather was to change and your child needed tracksuit pants, a jacket or jumper you need to be prepared early.
