Husky Star Newsletter Week 2 Term 3 2020

From the School Leadership Team

Dear Parents and Carers,

Thank you to all our families for your support on Monday and Tuesday during these extreme weather conditions. We hope that all of you made it through the storm with minimal damage. If you have been negatively impacted by the storm, please do not hesitate to contact us for assistance and support. We will be very mindful of our little people over the coming weeks, as this is yet another trauma that they have been affected by. The attached photo is of three familiar faces dressed in clothing from our current dress-up box. With smiles on our faces we were completely drenched, from cleaning gutters and drains during the downpour on Monday. Next time we will be better prepared with gumboots and rain clothing on hand.

The SkoolBag app is the easiest way keep up with school events, last minute notices, newsletters and all school communications.

Emergency Communications

Just a quick reminder that SkoolBag is our preferred method of communication. If there is an emergency at school you will be notified via the SkoolBag app. There are download instructions above. It is at this time that we would like to remind all of our families to ensure that your contact details are updated with our office. If any contact or emergency contact details have changed, please send a note into the office with your child.

It is also timely to ensure that your child has a reliable contact and written permission to travel with another adult in cases of emergency. Again this must be received at the office in writing. We appreciate your co-operation with updating this information.

High School Orientation

Due to all the changes this year, our Year 6 Orientation and Transition program to Vincentia High School will look a little different. This week our students were visited by the Year 7 2021 Year Advisors and some of the Clontarf coordinators. They spoke to the students about High School and what sort of opportunities would be available for the students. This was a fantastic way to remind our students that technically there are only 18 more weeks of Primary School. Huskisson teachers will continue to work closely with the High School to ensure a smooth transition for our precious students.

Learning about Vincentia High School

Huskisson Public School is the first primary school to get a robot.

Today Huskisson Public School was the first school to get a robot. This robot is supplied by Canteen and will be operated by Alex from year 6. There are 11 robots like this in the country and they are designed to connect students to their class when they need to miss a lot of school due to illness. This morning Sarah from Canteen, came to teach up all about this wonderful piece of technology. On Tuesday Miss Leslie will experiment with Alex and the robot and we all look forward to having our smiling Alex back in our classroom, even though he has a robotic body.

Regards,

EDUCATION WEEK 2020

Stage One learn about bees in the library

Library News Week 2 Term 3

Creepy crawlies, technology, and bushfire studies are some of the themes we will be addressing in the library this term. Kindergarten, Year 1 and Year 2 had a great introduction to insects and have started learning how to draw scientific diagrams as well as having some online fun with interactive skill-based games.  This week the library was swarming in all things bee related and in turn, the students learned all about beekeeping!

Stage 2 are really diving into the world of technology and have been introduced to new learning using the Dash and Evo robots.  Other groups are trying to keep their hands steady as they are making animations using our extensive Lego collection.  Bushfire mitigation is the hot topic with Stage 3. Over the term we will be learning all about the nature of fire, cultural burning and how bushfires have effected our lifestyle, the local environment and the world.

Sadly, we have not been able to hold our annual Book Fair so far this year, however, we do have a tentative booking for late in Term 4.  In the meantime students can still purchase books through Scholastic and  this week they have received their Book Club catalogue. Thanks, in advance, for ordering books through Scholastic because 20% of every dollar spent by you gives us credits to buy great resources for the library.  Orders are due back by Friday 7th August.

Finally, I am not usually a supporter of any giveaways that our major stores promote, however, in this case Coles is giving away Little Treehouse books by Andy Griffiths.  Should you happen to obtain more than your family needs then please consider donating them to the library.  I have some fun activities planned for them should I get enough! Thanks and happy reading from Mrs Hanson

Get Active - Eat Well

From the Garden

Although National Tree Day was cancelled, Huskisson Public School has embarked on a whole school re vegetation project in our front playground. Every student, with their buddies weeded an area, planted, mulched and watered a shrub. Mrs Norris had selected a wonderful range of shrubs that are less likely to be eaten by kangaroos and rabbit. She had laid out all the plants and directed all students and staff members in hot to correctly carry out this process. Thank you Mrs Norris, we all look forward to looking after our shrubs and watching Huskisson Public School become a lovely green space.
