Smile Boston Project

Smile Boston Project is a street art project started by Bren Bataclan. In the summer of 2003, Bren Bataclan began leaving paintings of his colourful characters for people to take all over the Boston area, on park benches, in subway stations, schoolyards, and other public locations. To each painting, Bataclan attached a note that read, "This painting is yours to keep if you promise to smile at random people more often." This term, Room 26 have been working with Ms Smith and Mr Clinton, spreading positivity, and smiles are a good way to do that. The students painted some pictures onto canvas and attached the same message that Bren did. They then went on a walk around the school community and left them on doorsteps and shops. Here are some photos of them spreading their positive vibes. We hope it made some people smile.

The initiative was started by an artist by the name of Bren Bataclan who decided he would give away paintings with a note saying, “This painting is yours if you promise to smile at random people often”. You can find his website at the following link: http://www.bataclan.com/

Nationally Consistent Collection of Data on School Students with Disability (NCCD)

All schools are required to collect information about the numbers of students that they provide adjustments to under the Disability Discrimination Act (1992) and Disability Standards of Education. This data is used as the basis for national funding.

The NCCD involves the collection of;

·         the number of students receiving adjustments to enable them to participate in education on the same basis as other students

·         the level of adjustment provided to students

·          student’s type of disability if known

Under the model, the definition of disability is broad and includes learning difficulties, health and mental health conditions.

If your child is identified for inclusion in the Collection, the required information will be included in this year’s data collection.

If you have any questions about the data collection, please contact the school on 84492000. Further information can be found at: http://www.education.gov.au/nationally-consistent-collection-data-school-students-disability.

KNOCK OUT FOOTBALL

On Wednesday June 26th, the 6/7 boy’s football team played in round two of the School Sport SA knock out footy competition. We hosted games at Port Districts Football Club with Greenwith PS and Fulham North PS in a 3 way match up.

In closely fought matches at a pretty good standard, we were able to come out on top and progress to round 3.

LBS 4-0=24 defeated Greenwith PS 3-4=22

LBS 5-1=31 defeated Fulham North PS 3-5=23

Our next opponents will be last year’s grand finalists Rostrevor College with a semi-final place at stake. The game is to be played early next term.

STATE RUGBY LEAGUE CHAMPIONSHIPS

STATE RUGBY LEAGUE CHAMPIONSHIPS

This week we had year 6/7 boys and girls play in the State Rugby League Championships at West Beach. Run by the NRL, the competition has schools qualify for the finals day by progressing through regional championships. Twelve boy’s teams and twelve girl’s teams had made it to finals day.

The girls played a fierce brand of rugby league. They tackled hard and kept possession of the ball in attack. They went through the group stage undefeated with wins against Para Hills, Para Vista, Greenock, Hackham East and Two Wells. We met Henley in the semi-final and in an epic game, Henley converted a try with the last play of the game to snatch victory by 2 points. We then won the play-off for 3rd place.

The girls improved so much over the two tournaments and they should be proud to be the 3rd best team in the state.

The boy’s team were complimented by the tournament organiser on their creative, passing style of play. Our boy’s team was undersized compared to many of their opponents but fought bravely against the bigger bodies. Three losses and two wins against Nairne and Two Wells in the group stage meant that the boys missed the championship semi-finals. They played in the trophy finals and had two wins, including victory over Ridgehaven in the trophy match. Fifth place overall was a great result for the team.

School News

Defence School Mentor Program

Earlier in Term 2, our Defence students were extremely fortunate to attend the ‘Power to be Positive’ program put on by the amazing team at the Port Adelaide Football Club.

The ‘Power to be Positive’ is a wellbeing and resilience program that encourages students to develop skills that are regularly used by Port Adelaide players when faced with challenges both on and off the field.

Of the 46 players at the club, 26 of them are from interstate. Our students were able to draw many parallels from their own experiences with re-location and school transition.

The focus on the day was teaching our students about fixed v’s growth mindset, positive thinking, mindfulness, gratitude and goal setting.

We also got to show off our footy skills doing training drills and kick & catch with some of the Port Adelaide players. The kids also got to take part in the incredibly popular ‘inflatable specky world’ where our students took some amazing high flying marks.

Another highlight was question and autograph time with the players, Jack Watts, Paddy Ryder, Ryan Burton, Brad Ebert and Zac Butters, just to name a few.

We certainly had a fantastic day, which was topped off by a Port Adelaide show bag and tickets to the game.

Many thanks to the team at Port Adelaide Football Club, for teaching our students the ‘Power to be Positive’.

Semester 1 School Basketball

Congratulations to all of our basketball teams throughout Semester 1.

We had 4 teams represented in the grand finals. Well done to all.

Next semester, R/1 teams will play on Monday nights, 4/5's on Wednesdays and the  6/7's and 2/3's on Thursdays.
