2022 Term 3 Week 3

Education Week 2022

Every Day at Melrose Park Public School we aim to nurture and inspire every student to be a successful learner.

Students are at the heart of everything we do. We are committed to providing a positive safe and engaging environment for children to learn and grow. We are proud that all children are known, valued and cared for at Melrose Park PS.

I would like to recognise and thank the brilliant work of our staff – executive, teaching, support and administrative who are instrumental in working behind the scenes to produce the rich teaching and learning opportunities across academic, sporting and cultural areas.

Thank you to the many families who are connecting with their child's teacher over the course of this week, as they discuss their child's learning journey and learning goals. As a learning community we want to build on individual strengths, develop positive learning qualities, grow and achieve as learners and demonstrate our school expectations of respect and responsiblity.

Student paintings adore the fence line along Wharf Rd and Mary St. In collaboration with Ermington PS and Payce Developments  we are happy with the completion of this  successful community project. We welcome parents to the school this Thursday afternoon  asvisit their child's classroom. Together we celebrate our students and teachers in Education Week.

Melrose Park Public School Redevelopment

We welcome the recent announcement in the NSW State Budget that Melrose Park Public School is earmarked in the coming years for redevelopment.

Learner qualities - Optimism

Learning in 3R

This term, 3R are investigating soil as part of our learning in Science. Our science unit is about discovering how Earth’s surface has changed over time as a result of natural processes and human activity. Many of the students in our class have brought samples of soil from home to compare the contents of the soil with soil sourced from other areas.

As part of the digital technoloogy process, Mrs Grover introduced the class to Micro:bits which we programmed to test the level of moisture in the soil. We are discovering that water is a component of soil along with organic matter, rocks, sand, minerals and clay.

We also have the opportunity to work with a mushroom kit to see how mushrooms grow and develop.

Our learning in 3R continues to be engaging and valuable as we learn more and more about the world.

ROBOCUP JUNIOR COMPETITION

Each week, interested students in Year 5 and 6  attend an after school robotics program with Mrs Grover and Miss Ko. They have been working towards  and preparaing for the NSW Open RoboCup Junior competition which will held at Holy Cross College on Monday 22 August.

RoboCup Junior is a project-oriented educational initiative designed to introduce robotics to primary and secondary school children. Competitions bring STEM skills to life by tasking teams of students with designing and building a robot to play against other teams in a game-based engineering challenge.

Our three “rescue” teams have built and coded “rescue-robots” to navigate a fictional rescue-scenario challenge. This requires sophisticated programming of sensors to follow a black line, recognise objects and respond to various unknown situations.

We also have two teams competing in robot-soccer. Each team has built and programmed two autonomous robots to compete against other teams in matches. They use a variety of sensors to find the infrared-light-emitting ball and hopefully score some goals.

Our robotics students are working enthsusiastically developing their programming skills, problem solving and critical and creative thinking. They are looking forward to putting this into action when competing against other schools.

Good luck robo teams.

Athletics Carnival

Let's try again and hold the Athletics Carnival.

We have booked buses and the athletics track at Dunbar Park Marsfield for next week Wednesday 10 August. Families are welcome to attend.

Let's  hope for warm sunny weather.

Library News

Welcome back to a busy time in the library this term. All students should have now returned their books so that they can select new titles to take home.

NSW PRC 2022

The Premiers Reading Challenge (PRC) concludes this term on Friday August 19th. Successful students will receive a certificate at the end of the year.

Congratulations to all K-2 students who have successfully completed the challenge during class and library sessions.

Well done to the following years 3-6 students who have now completed the PRC: Georgie, Braiden, Lucinda, Connor, Andre, Sienna M., Ellie, Brooke, Maliq, Elizabeth, Ziah, Nathan, Ashleigh, Ava and Githanjali.

Volunteers needed!

We continue to receive many new books in our library that are used to support various reading programs throughout the school. If you would be willing to volunteer some time to cover new books for us, it would be most appreciated. Please see the office if you can help. Thank you.

Book Week 2022

This year we will be celebrating Book Week with the theme: Dreaming with eyes open. A fun filled day is planned in Week 6, giving students an opportunity to come dressed up as a book character. Students have begun discussing ideas for creating a costume representing a book character.

More information will follow in the coming weeks.

Bush to Bowl

Today we the school participated in an Aboriginal Cultural Immersion Day  celebrating the strengths and culture of our first nations people. It was an opportunity for us to show our support for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture, as well as learn about bush foods, art and dance customs.

We thank the presenters who were enthusiastic and engaged our students so well.

Visiting the school

All visitors to the school must first go to the school office,  from 9.00am onwards.

A forgotten book, lunch, a hat or jumper can be brought to the office where an admin officer will deliver the item to the child's classroom.

If your child needs to leave early for an appointment, again please come to the office and your child will be called. They can be then collected safely from the office.

Thank you for your assistance in this matter.
